Parkside Primary News Week ending: Friday 9th May 2025

Mental Health Awareness Week

Next week, from 12th-16th May, we will be celebrating Mental Health Awareness Week 2025. This year’s theme is community and specifically how being a member of a community can support our mental health. Your child will be exploring issues around positive engagement in the community and more specifically thinking about a pledge they can make to their community and sharing community groups that they are part of. As part of this we would also like to invite your child to wear something green on Friday 16th May.

Friday 16th March

Junction Takeover Festival

The Takeover Festival took place at Junction on Friday 2nd and Saturday 3rd May. Pupils in Year 4 acted as Young Producers to create a wonderful and accessible festival for all to enjoy. The theme to their festival was 'Family Footprints', celebrating family in whatever shape or form that takes.

Please take a look at just some of the photos of this fantastic event. (Photos from Roblin Photography  http://roblingphotography.com/)

Sports Days

Just a reminder that Sports Days are coming up this half term. Letters were sent out at the end of last week. Please see the dates below and click the links for a reminder of the details:

Year 5 Visit

The Year 5 children had enjoyable and informative visits to the Jame Masjid Mosque in Hull last week. Each group was shown around by a very welcoming Iman and they learned about Pilgrimage to Mecca which they have been studying in their RE work. Here's what some of the children had to say:

Maisie - "We had a tour around the rooms in the Mosque and it was really cool because I had never been in a Mosque before."
Lily - "When we arrived on the bus it looked like a small house but when we got inside it was actually really big and I'm not a Muslim but I really enjoyed learning about the Islamic Faith"
Ruben - "We learnt that they watched the World Cup in the Mosque, they showed us the TV they watched it on in one of the rooms"
Skye - "I really enjoyed it because we got to learn about all 5 pillars and how they pray, and how the dome in the Mosque makes everything louder."

Head Lice advice

Head lice and nits are very common in young children and their families. They do not have anything to do with dirty hair and are picked up by head-to-head contact. It is a good idea to check your child's hair regularly to see whether there are any lice present. A consistent approach to detection is the best way to control head lice. The advised method is wet-combing. Please click the links below for a guide to wet-combing and our head lice policy.

KS1 Home Learning

Just a reminder that regular use of Numbots, Reading Eggs and FFT Reading at home really makes a difference to your child's literacy and maths skills. If you need any help with logins or accessing these from home, please get in touch.

Year 6 Leavers Assemblies

We know it is a little while off (our super Year 6s are not leaving us just yet!) but here are the timings for the leavers assemblies to help parents with their planning. They will take place on Friday 18th July, with a separate assembly for each class:

  • 1.20 - 2.00pm - 6CB
  • 2.10 - 2.40pm - 6HR
  • 2.50 - 3.20pm - 6HS

Reminder - no make up

Please can we remind all parents that children should not wear make up or nail varnish to school, as stated in our Uniform Policy. Additionally, no jewellery should be worn or brought to school. (If pupils have pierced ears, ONE pair of discreet studs may be worn, but they must be able to remove them for PE).

Please click the button below to read the full policy:

Summer Fair

We sent out information last week about the upcoming events planned by the Friends of Parkside PTA. As part of the Summer Fair, our Community Champion pupils will be running some stalls, including a tombola. They would be very grateful for any donations of prizes. Spotlight on Attendance 🔦

See below for attendance data for the last two weeks. The overall school attendance was much better for the first week back after the holidays, rising to above 96% but then dropped again in the second week. Please remember that absence from school not only equates to lost learning but also missing out on other benefits to a child's wellbeing and wider development.

Please also be aware that a period of five unauthorised days out of school will incur a penalty notice. Please take note of the changes to penalty notices and our updated attendance policy. This information is also available on the Absence & Attendance page on our website.

The Department of Education has advice on improving attendance - click here to view.

If you have any concerns regarding attendance please do not hesitate to contact Mrs Greenley, our Safeguarding and Attendance officer here at Parkside Primary School.

Safeguarding and Wellbeing - Help available from school

If you have any concerns about the safety and wellbeing of a child who attends Parkside Primary or require any additional support or advice with regards to attendance please do not hesitate to contact Mrs Greenley, our Safeguarding & Attendance Officer. If you have any question or worries about your child’s behaviour or require any additional family support then please do not hesitate to contact Mrs Daine, our Behaviour & Family Support Worker. Both members of staff are also available for children to talk to should they have any worries.

If you have any Safeguarding concerns outside of school hours, or are concerned a child has suffered or is likely to suffer significant harm and is at immediate risk call the Children’s Safeguarding Hub on (01482) 395500 or ring 999 (asking for the Police).
