THE FOUNDERS
Peter and Nancy met, fell in love, and joined forces to transform a 400-acre wildlife ranch into what is now the renowned Safari West Wildlife Preserve.
PETER ANTON LANG
Peter Lang’s visionary spirit and passion for wild places were ignited at an early age. Growing up on the back lots and sound stages of Hollywood, where his father, Otto Lang, produced iconic shows like Daktari and Sea Hunt, Peter had the unique opportunity to work closely with lions, chimpanzees, and other exotic animals. Inspired by these early experiences, Peter purchased land in the foothills of the Mayacamas Mountains north of Santa Rosa in the late ’80s. There, he transformed the property into a pioneering conservation breeding facility, relocating his growing collection of wild animals and laying the foundation for what would become Safari West.
NANCY ANNE LANG, Ph.D.
Driven by a lifelong passion for wild places and creatures, Dr. Nancy Lang pursued an impressive academic journey, earning both a B.A. and M.A. in biology from San Francisco State University, followed by a Ph.D. from the prestigious University of Wales in Cardiff. She spearheads all the conservation and educational programs at Safari West and is highly respected by her colleagues in the zoological community for her groundbreaking work and dedication to wildlife preservation.
As Safari West enters its next chapter under nonprofit stewardship, the vision that began with founders Peter Lang and Dr. Nancy Anne Lang continues to guide its path forward. Guided by our knowledgeable team, guests set out in an open-air vehicle to, explore the fascinating world of animal courtship. Through engaging, often lighthearted interpretation, you’ll learn about the diverse and sometimes surprising ways animals attract mates—from subtle signals to elaborate displays.
Whether celebrating a holiday or simply looking for something a little different, our seasonal adventures offer a unique opportunity to experience Safari West in a new light—where education and entertainment come together in unexpected and memorable ways.
IS SAFARI WEST FAMILY FRIENDLY?
Absolutely. Safari West is designed to be welcoming for families, offering shared experiences that spark curiosity and connection across all ages. While we don’t offer children-specific programming, the entire visit—from exploring the preserve to spending the night under canvas—encourages discovery, learning, and a deeper appreciation for wildlife.
Because of the length and structure of the Classic Safari, children must be at least four years old to join the tour. Private safaris, however, offer more flexibility and can accommodate younger guests, making it easier for families with little ones to experience the preserve together.
Beyond the safari, there are simple, memorable moments that make a stay special for younger guests—roasting marshmallows in the evening, enjoying games in the Elephant Room, and falling asleep in a safari tent surrounded by the sounds of the wild. It’s an experience that blends adventure with comfort, creating lasting family memories while supporting Safari West’s mission of Research, Education and Conservation.

Because of the natural terrain and the structure of our safari vehicles, some experiences may have limitations, but we do our best to offer thoughtful alternatives and guidance in advance of your visit.

ROOTED IN RESEARCH, EDUCATION, AND CONSERVATION
At Safari West, these are not abstract ideas—they are part of daily life. They are found in the quiet observation of a herd, in the curiosity of a student, and in the consistent, thoughtful care provided to more than 900 animals. They are also found in the stories.
Moments like Safiri and Tarra’s calf—born small and fragile, requiring round-the-clock care—brought together veterinary teams, animal care staff, and a community holding its breath, then celebrating resilience.
And Ozzy, the young rhino whose name carries meaning beyond the preserve—chosen in a moment that reflected how deeply connected life, loss, and renewal can be. His presence is more than symbolic; it represents the future of a species that depends on human care, awareness, and action.
