Dear University Community,

There’s a busy week ahead @ TAMIU.

  • It’s International Education Week Nov. 18 - 22 with daily event offerings scheduled. And our Dusty Diner will offer some International food options this week as well.
  • Annual Giving Day is underway, a time to give back and support TAMIU students in this celebration focused on generosity provided by alumni, friends, and community members. Find out more.
  • On Wednesday, our Border Voices Lecture Series will feature Dr. Norma E. Cantu who will present “From the Self to the World: A Generative Writing Workshop” from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Joe A. Guerra Laredo Public Library, 1120 E. Calton Road. Here are details.
  • On Thursday at 11 a.m. join us at the Acequia Fountain for our “U are Dear to Us” Celebration. See our dedicated website to find out what’s in store. Hint: you may have “herd” more about this on our social media accounts.
  • Also, Thursday let’s get in the holiday spirit with our TAMIU Tree Lighting at 6 p.m. on the Sue and Radcliffe Killam Library front lawn. Admission is free and open to the community. You can also donate a non-perishable food item to our Dusty’s Food Pantry at this event.
  • Last week, we were joined by Dean of State Senate, Senator Dr. Judith Zaffirini, who helped us to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of our Ph.D. program in International Business Administration. Afterwards, the Senator also presented the Senator Judith Zaffirini Teachers’ College Student Loan Debt Grant Program Awards.
  • At last week’s 2024 Fall Convocation Ceremony, we presented faculty and community awards. Please congratulate Dr. George R. Clarke, Distinguished Professor and Director of the Center for the Study of Western Hemispheric Trade, recipient of the Senator Judith Zaffirini Leadership Medal Award; Dr. Kaitlyn Chacón, Assistant Professor of English, College of Arts and Sciences, Department of Humanities, Distinguished Teacher Award, and Dr. Haibo Wang, Distinguished Professor, Division of International Business & Technology Studies. A.R. Sanchez, Jr. School of Business, Distinguished Scholar Award.
  • Also, Lilia Patricia Cantú, retired University College Senior Lecturer, the Outstanding Teacher Award; Judith Gutiérrez, Lecturer in Mathematics, College of Arts and Sciences, Department of Mathematics and Physics, Instructional Technology Excellence Award, and the Sisters of Mercy, our 2024 Innovador Award.
  • Congratulations to the 1,813 TAMIU students honored for their on-time degree completion during our TAMIU Student Success Wall Ceremony last week. That’s how you Go Beyond.

In honor of International Education Week, I’ll leave you with this quote from from Hans Christian Anderson:

To move, to breathe, to fly, to float, To gain all while you give, To roam the roads of lands remote: To travel is to live.

Have a great week!

- Juan J. Castillo, interim president
