What's On? Week 2 | Term 3 - 2025 | 28 July 2025 | Mullumbimby High School Newsletter

Message from our Principal

A busy term

We are settling into Term 3 which is arguably the busiest term of the year. It was wonderful to celebrate our Muggi Muggi Culture for NAIDOC week with our Dancers in week 1 sharing their culture at Brunswick Heads and Mullumbimby Public Schools as well as with us at our school assembly last week. It is such a privilege to have so many committed elders and leaders in our community to share this cultural knowledge and grow it with our students. A very big thank you to Chloe Power and Adam Culbert who were instrumental in the organisation of the week for our students.

Brunswick Primary School
Year 10 Subjects and Activities

Thank you to the families of Year 10 students who attended our Subject Selection Showcase last week. Our students have some big decisions to make over the next few weeks about their pattern of study for Year 11 and 12. For those that couldn’t make it along, I really encourage you to come along with your young person for the individual interviews in week 3. Getting the right pattern of study for each student is so important to ensure a successful and supported two years of senior studies. When discussing subject selection always focus on the three key questions; “Am I good at this?”, “Do I enjoy this?” and “Do I need this subject for my future?”

This week is another big one for Year 10, with many of them experiencing the Snow excursion while others are attending the Northern Rivers Career Expo and completing work experience. No mater which pathway, our students will be getting a great deal of benefit, growth and learning.

Check In Assessments for Year 7 to 9

Also, this week we are undertaking Check-In Assessments with Year 7, 8 and 9. This is an opportunity for us to get a snapshot of our student learning in comparison to the rest of the state but also to help us to identify learning gaps to fill or areas of strength to celebrate. These are low stakes tests for students but are really invaluable to us as educators to check our own teacher professional judgment about where students are achieving. The great thing about them too is that the feedback is very quick (within the week) allowing us to pivot in programming to ensure our students are getting what they need in their learning.

HSC Trial Examinations

Next week, Year 12 start their HSC trial examinations, so we are sending our unconditional love to them as they prepare for two very big weeks.

Community Conversations with Mullumbimby Neighborhood Centre: Invitation to MHS Parents on Monday 28 July

Dear P&C members and friends,

How can we make Mullumbimby even better for our kids, our families, and ourselves? The Mullumbimby Neighborhood Centre (MNC) wants to hear from you at a special Community Conversations evening just for MHS parents and staff.

Mel Williams from the MNC says: "We are really hoping for this to be meaningful work in our community, long term, not just a one-off project that disappears in time. We are looking to re-connect our community and build capacity along the way."

"We have held some really great conversations with different groups this year, and we are beginning to understand what truly matters to our community. It’s been really interesting, and we are beginning to see some 'ripples' of change."

"Of course, one of the hardest demographics to reach is the working/family/middle section of our community, for obvious reasons (they are busy working and making ends meet, etc.) However, we do need to hear these voices to have an understanding of what is meaningful to them."

That’s us! This session is a chance to share what matters most to MHS families—whether it’s wellbeing programs, safe streets, after-school activities, or anything in between. The more voices in the room, the stronger the ripple effect.

It can be difficult on those days to find your student at a last-minute notice as some are involved in sports outside the school grounds.

Breakfast Club on Monday Mornings

Every Monday morning from 8:20am to 8:40am at the Wellbeing Hub, Mullum High's Breakfast Club is back. Cereal, toast, banana smoothies and milkshakes. Everyone is welcome, everything is free. All you need to bring is your smile and all you need to do afterwards is wash up. Come and say hi.

Homework Club on Thursday Afternoons

Every Thursday afternoon starting Week 2 from 3pm to 4pm in the School Library, everyone is welcome and light snacks will be provided. This is a great opportunity to get some one-on-one help with school work, homework or assessment tasks. Bring a friend and a task to work on.
