Naomi Ohman Multimedia research and content creation

Hello, my name is Naomi. I grew up in Minnesota as the youngest in my family. Being little, perpetually (and a bit hopelessly) trying to keep up with four older and wiser siblings fostered in me independence, initiative, and a strong sense of adventure. I love getting to know brand new places and people, and I’ve gotten to do just that while pursuing multimedia storytelling. I’m passionate about telling stories that build and benefit communities, and this passion has taken me to many places in my Montana community, across the U.S., and around the world to explore histories, cultures, research and stories. I’m so excited to share with you the projects I’ve gotten to work on, and I hope they are as meaningful to you as they have been to me.

In Molly Todd's public history lab our team catalogued archival boxes, created a historic memory workshop, made educational social media posts, and led a U.S. - El Salvador Sister Cities member meeting for which I developed a historic memory workshop.

HRDC Housing FIrst documentary

DATE: 08/2023 - 05/2024

For one year I worked with two peers to create a documentary for the Housing Resource Development Council, a non profit that serves our community in Bozeman Montana in a variety of ways. I co-directed and produced the project.

We had the privilege of interviewing many inspiring individuals, meanwhile developing filmmaking skills alongside Montana State University mentors.

At the end of one year, I worked with HRDC event coordinators to plan and market a screening for "Give Big" on May 3rd 2024, to raise funds for the HRDC's new Warming Center. The film impacted attendees and I moderated a panel with HRDC staff so audience members could ask questions about topics addressed in the film and the HRDC's programs and mission.

Sheyenne National Grassland United States Forest Service Interpretive project

Date: 08/2023 - 03/2024

We created a film series that required writing historical scripts about the Sheyenne National Grassland history, and interview questions for United States Forest Service Staff. Joseph Esparza and I worked on editing these scripts, and Joseph used his background in public interpretation to deliver these scripts on camera. The Sheyenne National Grassland USFS staff members were also featured in the videos on their respective subjects. I brought my knowledge in filmmaking and editing to successfully create these films. After spending a week of filming, we spent the following months professionally editing the videos for public viewing. After adding official U.S. Forest Service branding, the videos were delivered to USFS staff with QR codes for the panels and kiosks in on the grasslands.

Kotor, Montenegro

While I worked with DMAD (Deniz Memelileri Araştırma Derneği) Marine Mammals Research Association, I conducted survey research multiple times a week. I participated in workshops such as photographic identification techniques and software and grant writing, and I created short promotional videos of the organization’s research and community activities. I also volunteered with multiple outreach, volunteer and education events. I spent the rest of my time working on an independent documentary with a local fisherman and tour guide about recent environmental and social changes.

El Terreno intern

DATE: 01/2023 - 03/2023

While working with El Terreno I created a self-led cultural preservation and humanities project in and around Atandahua Ecuador.

I conducted dozens of interviews with residents researching the concept of home, both their connections and disconnections.

I compiled the information from these interviews, analyzed, and edited the videos. I then created a final compiled document and edited together a short introduction video.

From the research and collective memory, I wrote a children’s book for presentation with students and I worked with a local artist to design a mural based off the story for the next door school. I am now working towards illustration, publication, and distribution in Bolívar province.

In addition to the project, I also volunteered on various projects from painting, planting native forest, and helping construct a new cultural center with adobe.
