Class 1 and 2 Spring 2 newsletter

Literacy

Our first text was 'The Tiny Seed' by Eric Carle. We followed the journey of ten seeds and all the different settings they travelled to.

Some of the seeds did not grow but the tiny seed became a magnificent flower.

In our non-fiction writing we labelled the parts of a plant and learned about what a plant needs to grow.

We then planted our own seeds and wrote instructions.

Our second text was the traditional story, Jack and the Beanstalk. We worked collaboratively to think of words to describe the giant before writing our own character descriptions.

Our final outcome from the 'Jack and the Beanstalk' text was to retell the story in our own words using a picture storyboard. We are continuing to focus on our capital letters, finger spaces and full stops and using our phonic knowledge to sound out words.

We celebrated World Book Day and our love of reading by dressing up as a favourite character from a book that we love. We had a fantastic day reading stories and had a very special World Book Day lunch.

Maths

In maths we revisited double numbers but this time up to double 10 and beyond. Some children used Numicon and counters to support their understanding and some children practised instant rapid recall of doubles.

We then moved onto teen numbers and finding the number that is one more and less with numbers beyond ten. We are continuing to match numerals to amounts and understand that numbers in the teens have a group of ten. We are getting better at forming all our numbers from the top, one per square with fewer reversals.

Some children are working beyond 20 and are beginning to have a good understanding of the number system and numerical patterns. They can say the number that is one more and one less to 100 and understand place value.

Science

In Science we have been planting seeds and observing natural changes over time. This linked into our literacy topic of The Tiny Seed. We learned the word 'germinate' and understand that first the seed forms roots in the soil before the stem begins to grow.

We planted cress seeds and hope to see them germinate soon.

Throughout the year we have been learning about the four seasons and observing the changes to trees and plants in our outdoor area. We created pictorial representations of a tree throughout the four seasons. Ask us to sing the four seasons song.

Design Technology

Our subject driver this half term was design technology and we have worked with a range of different media and textiles. We learned how to do a running stitch and a weaving stitch. We have also done paper weaving for our Easter cards and tissue paper mosaic work to create sunflowers.

Here is an example of an over stitch technique. We were proud to display our work in the hall as part of the whole school Design Technology display.

PE

Our topic this half term was football skills. We learned how to pass and trap the ball and how to shoot accurately at a target. Finally we practised control of the ball by dribbling it around the cones. We continued this learning in our outdoor area where we have to organise ourselves independently and take turns with our outdoor football net.

Computing

In computing we are learning how to use a QR code to log onto our own Seesaw account using the Seesaw app. We completed a simple programme linked to literacy where we had to find the characters and settings from our key text and sequence the main events. We now also have our Numbots accounts and passwords and we have all had a go at using the programme. Passwords will be sent home next term so we can access this at home.

PHSE

We have been learning about people who keep us safe and Ariella's dad kindly came into school to talk to us about his role in the police. The children learned about the four main emergency services and how they work to keep everyone safe.

We wanted to thank the most amazing people in our lives for Mother's Day

Coming Soon

Next half term our key text in Literacy will be Chicken Licken and we will be doing lots of science work around life cycles. In maths we will be grouping and sharing with practical resources and revisiting capacity and weight. Our subject driver is Geography and we will be learning about our village and our town. We will also have our first educational visit to the theatre. On Monday the 29th April we will be visiting Barnsley Civic to watch a performance based on the book 'Dear Zoo' by Rod Campbell.

We would like to thank all our wonderful parents and carers for their continued support over Spring Term 1 and hope you all have an amazing Easter Holiday. We look forward to working with you all over the Summer Term.
