Thank you to our BBHS P&C

The Byron Bay High School P&C recently presented our school with a cheque for $20,000 to put towards vital resources for our students. This money was raised through the P&C's 'It Takes a Village' raffle and Trivia Night fundraising events that were held at the end of last year.

We extend a BIG thank you to the wonderful parents of this committee for the amazing work they do for our school. We also thank our school families and the wider Byron Bay community for supporting these fundraising efforts - donations like this make a real difference for our school!

E-bike safety

A crucial conversation for parents and students

Parents and carers, please be aware that we have had an increased number of students presenting to our school's Sick Bay with injuries sustained whilst riding their e-bikes to school. With the growing popularity of electric bikes (e-bikes) among students, it's vital that we all understand the safety measures that come with using them.

All bikes on the school grounds must remain on the grass and be parked in the nominated bike racks along the basketball courts.
E-bikes can be a fun and efficient way to travel, but they must be used responsibly.

By law, e-bikes are not allowed to travel faster than 25 km/hr. Riders must also use a bell to alert pedestrians when passing, and helmets are mandatory for safety. These rules are in place to prevent accidents and injuries — yet, not everyone is following them.

Recently, a local man was seriously injured at a sporting event in Ocean Shores after being struck by a teenager on a speeding e-bike. The incident caused significant distress to both the injured man and the young rider involved. It was a stark reminder of how quickly things can go wrong when safety guidelines are ignored.

We urge all parents to speak with their children about e-bike safety. Make sure they understand the speed limits, the importance of using a bell, and always wearing a helmet. Together, we can help ensure our community remains a safe place for everyone.

A reminder that anyone parking a vehicle or bike on school premises (staff and students) does so at their own risk.

NOTE: On our school grounds all bikes including e-bikes can only be locked to the bike racks near the basketball courts... no where else. The Department of Education does not allow e-bikes to be parked against / near buildings or structures. This is vital for the safety of our students and staff, and also for the safety of our school campus should a battery catch on fire.

BBHS school jumpers

An update from School Locker

We have spoken with our uniform supplier, School Locker, and they have advised that they have had some manufacturing issues with the BBHS school jumper. They currently have some stock of this jumper available for purchase, however, the stock is limited while they work with their manufacturer.

They do have plenty of the BBHS Varsity jackets in stock. These jackets can be worn by all students in Years 7 to 12 and are a warm option as the weather turns colder.

BBHS Winter Uniforms summary:

  • Long pants - students can wear plain navy or black long pants (Chinos or trackpants)
  • Jumpers - should be plain navy, without stripes or large logos (any external logos must be no larger than a credit card). Regional or state representative sport jumpers may be worn
  • Undershirts - can be white, black, or navy blue
  • Shoes - must be totally enclosed footwear; no crocs, ugg boots, sandals or slides
Denim jeans, tights and bike pants - are NOT a part of our school uniform

Student Spotlight

Maddy and Ximi are off to Sydney for music!

Two of our very talented Year 7 students have achieved excellence by being accepted into the Department of Education: The Arts Unit's Junior State Wind Band ensemble (for students in Years 5-8).

Ximi G and Maddy M have both been offered and accepted places in this ensemble - Ximi as a percussionist and Maddy as a saxophonist.

The State Wind Band provides an opportunity for high potential and gifted music students in NSW public schools to perform in state ensembles under the direction of professional conductors. The bands perform repertoires chosen to challenge and extend students' musical skills.

Ximi and Maddy will be performing at the Sydney Opera House as part of the Festival of Instrumental Music in September!

What an impressive achievement for both girls! We are very proud of their achievement and this is a great recognition for them as young musicians. We look forward to reporting more about Maddy and Ximi's experience with the Junior State Wind Band later in the year, when they return from Sydney.

Open Boys and Girls Soccer

The teams have their eyes firmly set on the CHS NC finals!

Last week, in thrilling games here at home, both our Open soccer teams triumphed in their semi-final matches and are now off to the North Coast finals in Coffs Harbour.

Open Boys Soccer Round 4 update

Our Open Boys Soccer team had another step in the right direction, for their pathway to CHS Soccer glory! This time, with a hard fought extra time victory at home against a spirited Alstonville High School.

In challenging wet conditions our boys prevailed 2-1, although the final score failed to represent the dominance of another consistent team performance. Locked at nil all at half time, Zelko P scored shortly into the second half, to give the team reward for their attacking effort in the first half.

Alstonville squared the ledger a few minutes later, and the game ended at one goal a piece. As extra time began, it was very clear that our boys had one agenda in mind, and within minutes the result swung our way with a perfect header from Oscar W, that sank deep into the net. The team will take on this much needed confidence as we travel down to Coffs Harbour next week to challenge for the North Coast title game against Orara High School.

There is a strong sense of unity and purpose building within this team, and we wish them all the best of luck in their upcoming games.

Go Boys!!!

Mr Damian Bisogni - Learning Support teacher and Open Boys Soccer team coach

Open Girls Soccer Round 4 update

Our Byron Bay High School CHS Open Girls Football team has triumphed in the semi-final with a 3-1 victory over The Rivers Secondary College!

Despite tough, rainy conditions, the girls delivered an outstanding team performance. Scarlet W shone in the midfield, setting up our strong forwards with an excellent through ball to give BBHS an early advantage.

Returning strongly from injury, Mia H scored 2 impressive goals, while Hayden A added the 3rd to secure the win.

The girls now advance to the North Coast final in Coffs Harbour next week against Bellingen High School.

Let’s go Byron!

Bill Turner Cup Round 3

Our U15 Boys fall just short in a classic clash

Photos courtesy of Greg Meek

In a fiercely contested and high-quality encounter, the Byron Bay High School U15 boys soccer team fell just short in a 3-2 loss to Emmanuel Anglican College (EAC), in what can only be described as a thrilling game of school football.

From the first whistle, both teams played with intensity and skill, producing an engaging match that kept spectators on the edge of their seats.

EAC’s sharp passing and clinical finishing gave them the edge for much of the contest, but Byron Bay refused to back down, showing heart, hustle and determination throughout.

Luan was the standout for BBHS, scoring both goals, including a dramatic late strike that reignited hope for an equaliser. Unfortunately, time was not in our favour and the final whistle blew, ending our great knockout run.

Credit must go to the EAC boys for a polished performance – they were worthy winners on the day. But, hats off to our Byron Bay boys, who played with courage and never gave up.

A tough result, but definitely a performance to be proud of.

Year 10 School Vaccination Program

The Year 10 vaccinations will take place at school on Tuesday 17 June

Keeping your child up to date with routine vaccinations helps to protect them from serious preventable diseases. Year 10 parents and carers, please refer to the email sent to you on Tuesday 27 May for full details about this program.

Each year NSW Health works in partnership with schools to offer the vaccines recommended by the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) for adolescents as part of the School Vaccination Program.

In 2025, students in Year 10 are offered a free vaccine at school for:

  • Meningococcal ACWY (single dose)

This vaccine is important as it protects against four types of meningococcal bacteria, which cause serious disease that can quickly become life-threatening.

To register your child to receive this vaccination at school you will be required to grant your consent online through the NSW Health link provided below. Paper consent packs are also available from the school office if you do not have access to a computer.

Vaccinations will only be provided at school if you provide your consent. No student will be vaccinated without consent.

How to provide your online consent:

  • Visit the School Vaccination Program online consent portal
  • Click the login button in the School Vaccination Program section and log in using your Service NSW details (this is the same account you may already use to renew your driver’s licence, etc)
  • Update or confirm your personal details in Service NSW as required
  • Complete the School Vaccination Consent Form for your child

We also recommend that you have a conversation with your child to advise them if you have registered them to receive a vaccination on Tuesday 17 June. If your child misses this School Vaccination Clinic, you can speak to your local GP or pharmacist about catching up on vaccinations.

Sick Bay Procedure

When your child is unwell at school

With the winter cold and flu season upon us, it is very important that students who are feeling unwell at school advise their teacher and go to the Sick Bay.

Our First Aid Officer will phone or text parents/carers if it is necessary for a sick child to be picked up. In this case a parent/carer (or one of the nominated Emergency Contacts on file) will need to come into the school Office to collect your child in person.

It is vital that the correct procedure is followed enabling our First Aid Officer to monitor your child and prevent the spread of infection to other students and staff.

A reminder that students are NOT permitted to use their phones while at school and messaging their parents directly is not our procedure.

Please discourage your child from contacting you directly via text message regarding illness. It is vital that the correct procedure is followed so that your sick child can be monitored in the sick bay by our first aid officer and prevent the infection to other students and staff.

Thank you for your assistance and for working with us to keep our community safe and well.
