That's a wrap on another great term...
Dear Parents and Carers
Thank you to all our families for another amazing term at Byron Bay High School! Our teachers and support staff have created many great opportunities inside and outside of the classroom for our students to extend their learning, demonstrate excellence and feel successful.
To ensure we continue as a learning community to set and maintain high expectations for our students' learning and wellbeing please work over the holidays on:
- Ensuring your child has a full school uniform to wear from day one next term - Please remember that denim jeans are not part of our uniform and all jumpers must be navy blue. Shoes must be totally enclosed and secure footwear - no crocs, sandals or ugg boots.
- Checking your child's workbooks and pencil case - Please check your child's workbooks and supplies over the break and buy new workbooks if their workbooks are full, or repair any workbooks that need repairing. Also make sure your child has a full pencil case of pens and a calculator to start Term 3 afresh!
- School fees - Only 50% of our subject school fees have been paid in 2025 - This does not include the voluntary contribution. Please pay your child's subject fees as the funds go straight to teaching and learning supplies for our students. You can view your Statement of Account at any time through your School Bytes portal.
Have a fantastic break from the school routines. I look forward to seeing everyone back next term for more great learning and extra curricular opportunities for our students.

Year 10s Outdoor adventure
Outdoor Education students conquer Girraween National Park
An enthusiastic group of BBHS Outdoor Education students recently tested their theoretical and practical skills in planning and executing an excellent adventure to the mountains. These coastal kids excelled in their enthusiasm and willingness to embrace the elements and challenge themselves.
High open granite country in the middle of winter was not enough to deter these forewarned and well equipped adventurers.
Hiking high peaks and mountain ranges afforded students with a range of personal challenges and rewards. Frosty mornings paved the way for glorious sunny days, prime for hiking. Here's what the students said about their experience...
Beau R- "I reckon the camp was full hectic and easily the best camp I’ve been on. Mr Powers and Mr Minton were both absolute Gs and made it that much more fun. 10/10 social credit. Would recommend."
Jethro E - "The camp was very good and the food was excellent."
Jasper E - "I liked the mountain climb on the first day."
Blake J - "I enjoyed being the first person to play a game on top of the rock."
Jonathan M - "Pretty sure it was the best, if not one of the best, camping/school experiences I have ever had; the hiding and seeking, the more than freezing water, the climbing massive rocks and bonding with mates. But, what made it best of all were the teachers."
Tashi E - "It was good… The spotlight was fun as. Me and Blake locked in and the rocks were cool and big."
Lucas H - "The camp was amazing. It was probably the best school trip I have ever been on. I loved the freedom we had and the responsibilities that came with them. Mr Powers and Mr Minton were really great to us and did a great job organising."
Shae O-T - "I liked the mountain climb and the cooking on the first day."
Mr Coby Powers - HSIE teacher
From the Agriculture Plot
Year 7 Agriculture Term 2 update
Towards the end of this term, our Year 7 students have been harvesting their various plants in preparation of making an agricultural product. Their focus has been on maintaining a healthy plant production system, with emphasis on regenerative agricultural practices. Check out the giant radish that Jet is holding!
Our students made different types of agricultural products, trialing which would be most valuable if sold on the market. Here we have Noah O and Ewan R making Oobleck.
Oobleck is a made from a mixture of cornstarch and water. It exhibits properties of both a liquid and a solid, depending on the applied force. When stirred slowly, it behaves like a liquid, but when pressure is applied, it becomes more solid-like.
Students submitted their plant products with so much variation and thoughtfulness! We had cakes with edible flowers, bath salts with dried flowers, finely crafted bouquets, and even chilli chutney, which was sold at Bay Grocer over the weekend by Milla B, Harper W and Willow H.

Bee and Hen Clubs
The Bee Club is buzzing with new ideas!
We are buzzing with ideas, and goals for this year. So far we've had a great incursion where we are looking forward to a professional beekeeper coming in and teaching us and our teachers all about the wonderful world of bees. We've learnt how to safely extract the full frames, hive management, bee behavior, and seasonal care.
Beekeeping is a fascinating and rewarding skill that connects us with nature while supporting pollinators. We have especially been focusing on keeping our hives safe from pests and diseases, particularly Varroa Mites.

Our new egg-celent Hen Club!
Over the last term we’ve kicked off our egg-celent Hen Club. We’ve been fortunate enough to be guided by two fabulous teachers, Ms Mast and Hannah. They’ve been educating our group about the systems and precautions we need to take to properly care for our chickens.
We had our first go at incubating a clutch of eggs and we had one chick hatch. She is doing fabulously and we are working on integrating her into our flock of chickens. Hopefully we’ll have some more newly hatched friends for her soon too.

Year 12 showcase their music talents
The Year 12 Music Showcase hits all the right notes!
Despite the dreary weather last Friday night, a near full house of patrons turned out for our Year 12 Music Showcase in the PAC, where we were treated to a wide variety of high quality performances.
With acts that ranged from full bands, to soloists, duets, piano soloists and even a DJ.... the talent and energy of this current HSC class in performing both covers and original songs is outstanding.
We congratulate these students and their teacher, Mr Tim Baker, on their efforts. Special thanks also goes to Mr Black for his support with sound engineering on the night.

'Firebringer' is sparking joy
Rehearsals for our school Musical are well underway
I recently had the pleasure of stepping into a Firebringer Musical rehearsal, and what a joy it was to see all the students so immersed in the experience!
Director Adrienne Meg Lester and her cast and crew were busy at work, with students already well-rehearsed in choreography, lines, stage directions and singing, despite the project being in its early stages. Many students have been contributing as musicians, assistant directors and other crew members as well.
The musical has some really catchy tunes and brilliantly funny lines, and Meg has the students producing stunning movement work and strong character portrayal.
It looks like Firebringer is shaping up to be a fantastic show! We can't wait to see it performed on the stage in Term 4.

HSC Intensive Studio Practice
A wonderful opportunity for our Year 11 students
The NAS HSC Intensive Studio Practice is an exciting program for Year 11 Visual Arts students who are passionate about art and want to grow their skills for the HSC and beyond. Run by professional artists in real art studios, the program helps students develop their abilities, build their portfolios, and connect with other young artists from across NSW.
We are very proud to share that 2 of our talented Year 11 students Eana T and Marcella A have been accepted into this prestigious program! We look forward to seeing the new skills and experiences they will bring back after the winter break.
The dates for the 2025 HSC program are:
- Module 1: Tuesday 15 – Friday 18 July 2025
- Module 2: Monday 29 September – Friday 3 October 2025
The NAS HSC Intensive Studio Practice appears on the student’s HSC certificate as a one-unit course.
Further to these exciting achievements, Eana T and another Year 11 student, were also successful applicants for the Dobell Drawing School — a 4-day intensive drawing workshop held at the National Art School in April.
Both students travelled to Sydney during the April holidays to participate in this prestigious workshop, which complemented their Visual Arts studies at school around the human form.
During the Dobell Drawing School, students explored workshops including:
- Drawing the nude
- Portrait drawing
- The figure in context
- Experimental drawing with the figure
- Observational drawing
Both students returned fresh-faced and full of inspiration and passion. As Eana shared:
“Studying at NAS was an inspiring experience that allowed me to connect with a community of artists and immerse myself in a professional environment. It’s great for anyone looking to expand and challenge their artistic capability.”

Year 8 Positive Rewards excursion
An Afternoon of fun and film
Last week, our Year 8 cohort enjoyed a well-deserved Positive Rewards excursion to the Palace Cinemas in Byron Bay to see the new Pixar film Elio.
With popcorn and drinks in hand, students settled in for the movie before returning to school for some relaxed free time and games on the oval... making the most of the afternoon sunshine.
Throughout the excursion, our students represented the school in the local community with pride and maturity, demonstrating the values we strive to uphold.
A big thank you to Miss Healey, Mr Humphreys, and Mr Cronin for attending and supporting the day. We were all incredibly proud to spend the afternoon with such a respectful and positive group of students.
Well done, Year 8, and thank you for a fantastic afternoon!

Year 12 Mathematics Standard 2
2025 Aurora Study Day
On Friday 27 June, Year 12 Mathematics Standard 2 students took part in the 2025 Aurora College HSC Study Day—a comprehensive online revision session supporting students across New South Wales. The event featured expert presenters, experienced teachers, and HSC markers who delivered targeted advice and the most up-to-date information on course content.
The livestreamed format allowed students from metropolitan, rural, and remote schools to connect and revise together, fostering a strong sense of statewide collaboration. Byron Bay High School Mathematics Standard 2 teachers embraced this valuable opportunity to ensure our students receive high-quality HSC preparation and to stay aligned with best practices from schools across NSW.

Wednesday Sport Tennis update
The Term 2 tennis competition at BBHS was a fantastic display of enthusiasm, determination, and great sportsmanship. Each week, students showed up ready to play, improve their skills, and enjoy some healthy competition on the court. Whether students were seasoned players or trying tennis for the first time, it was wonderful to see so many giving it a go, learning from each other, and growing in confidence.
A special congratulations goes to Rahan H, who has been crowned the Term 2 Tennis Champion! Rahan earned an impressive 23 points across the season, demonstrating consistent effort, technical ability, and a positive attitude each week. His focus, resilience, and respect for other players were a credit to the spirit of the competition.
We’d also like to acknowledge all participants for their excellent manners, and respectful behaviour toward staff and each other. The way students conducted themselves on and off the court reflects the BBHS values and makes the competition a highlight of our term.
Thank you to all players and supervising teachers for making Term 2 tennis such a success. We look forward to more fun and rallies in Term 3!
