Royal Canadian Navy Tour
The Royal Canadian Navy's HMCS Nanaimo ship was recently in the harbour. Secondary students from Nanaimo Ladysmith Public Schools and the Qualicum School District explored the vessel. The public also had a chance to tour it. Check out what some of the students had to say about the experience!
Grade 7 Students Create Unique Newscast
Grade 7 students from École Quarterway Elementary have created Quarterway Nouvelle, a teambuilding project learning about broadcasting the news. The project teaches students about journalism, deadlines, how to create a newscast, and what's happening around them. All students have a role to play in front of the camera and behind the scenes. This weekly broadcast has been running since November.
Board of Education Meeting
At the Regular Board of Education Meeting on Wednesday, January 29, 2025, the Board received a number of updates from staff, including:

- The Aboriginal: How are we Doing Report
- School Site Acquisition Charge
The Board approved the Draft Revised Policy 205 - Trustee Code of Conduct and Conflict Resolution and circulated it as a notice of motion for 30 days (see below). Superintendent Robyn Gray presented the Superintendent's Reel which highlights the voices of our educators, achievements of our students and the unwavering support of our families and community partners. The Reel included recognizing and acknowledging:
- Rob Hutchins who was recently honoured by the Town of Ladysmith
- The Lahal Tournament hosted at John Barsby
- The Payroll Department for all they do!
- Wellington Secondary Sisters, Maria and Isabel, who received golf scholarships
- Upcoming events - Ready, Set, Learn - Season 5 of the Learning with Syeyutsus Speaker Series

Learning with Syeyutsus Speaker Series
Join us for our upcoming discussion with Dr. Georgina Martin, of Secwepemc ancestry and member of the Williams Lake First Nation, as she sheds light on the deep impacts of intergenerational trauma and the profound process of healing and reconnection from her personal journey.
The session is based around Georgina's book Drumming Our Way Home: Intergenerational Learning, Teaching, and Indigenous Ways of Knowing.
If you are unable to attend, the session will be recorded for viewing and learning afterwards.
WorkBC Offers Youth Drop-in Sessions
The WorkBC Resource Centre offers a Youth Drop-in centre on Wednesdays between 2:30 and 5:30pm. Students can learn about mini job fairs; receive support with resume and cover letters; and job search support. There will be program information and much more.

VIU Mariners Games
Did you know that VIU offers any youth, school or club team the option to attend game days for free? Here’s a link to the website for more information. There is also the opportunity for students and families to attend game days where there will be interactive activities, giveaways and prize draws. There is also volunteer opportunities for secondary students and community members.
Regular Season Games
The following games are the final games for the regular season. There will be a tailgate event with food, fun and games on the Thursday January 30th and Friday February 7th games hosted by the VIU Student Union.
- Volleyball on Thursday January 30th @ 6pm & 8pm and Friday January 31st @ 6pm & 8pm.
- Basketball on Friday February 7th @ 6pm & 8pm and Saturday February 8th @ 1pm & 3pm.
Tickets may be purchased at the front desk. Admission is as follows:
- VIU Students – Free
- Adults – $6 or 2 for $10
- Under 12 – Free
- Seniors (55+) – $4
- Non-VIU Students – $4
Volunteering
VIU is looking for volunteers for both the remainder of the season and the championship. Volunteers get a shirt, free pizza, and family can enter for free (regular season only).
Volunteers are asked to arrive 45 minutes before the start of the first match. So, 5:15 pm on Thursdays and Fridays, and 12:15 pm on Saturdays. A shift will last until the end of the game, typically 5 hours after the shift begins, but it varies.
Roles include:
- Welcome Tent Operator
- Concession Assistant
- Court Sweeper
- Photographer
- Game Recap Writer
- Slideshow Operator
- Ball Roller (Volleyball Only)
