Rashad Ali Muhammad, Inundated Threads, Fabric remnants, plastic bags, and netting, 2024

In a world where fast fashion consumes resources at an alarming rate, “Inundated Threads” thoughtfully explores the environmental impacts of textile waste and the urgent need for innovative reuse solutions. By transforming upcycled fabrics and plastic bags, I aim to illuminate the magnitude of this crisis and inspire reflection on our consumption habits.

Saya Behnam

Studio 229

"My work's context and goal is to show nature's unity, wholeness, and interconnectivity. You will find the concept of birth and death, cycles of life (using round canvas or shapes as a metaphor for unity, cycles), and recognizing patterns found in nature for energy, growth, chaos, and order. Using the sacred geometry patterns, fractal and biomorphic shapes are observed in natural elements from the cosmos and nebulas to a small flower. My Persian background image sources, such as the stylized patterns from Persian carpets to mythology figures and fables, influence me in many pieces.

I combine free-flow brushstrokes with these patterns. It can be considered as a dance from nature and interconnecting elements in any organic and unified system (like roots, branches, nervous system, nebulas, and more).

My hand-made colors and inks from earth minerals, fresh or dried flowers, plants, spices, plants, earth stones, and other pigments aren't just my mediums and colors; those are parts of the places and times I get them and are representations of time and space"

Sermin Ciddi

Studio 328

"I am contemporary Ottoman miniature (minyatür) artist; who persistently explores subjects of cityscapes, monuments and nature, in a comparable way to how an Ottoman chronicler would attempt to portray our environment today. Motivated by the word “esperanto”, I am committed to preserving the legacy of memories.

I depict places that I have lived in, visited and already reside in. I portray cities and nature as I see them today, and the way I want to perceive them, as well as bring into focus the parts that I want the observer to see, and hopefully feel.

The miniature painting style helps me embrace contemporary techniques while allowing me to remain loyal to my Turkish cultural roots. My artwork gives a voice to what I can’t convey to my audiences through words: spaces, hope and time that thrive inside and exist around us. Sometimes, it’s not possible to reach these spaces, which are presented through only perspectives. Regardless; my goal has always been to make my work relatable to individuals across the globe, in the hope of building cultural bridges that overcome our divisions and fears. My work stands for hope across domains of adversity."

"Washington DC's cherry blossoms are a wonderful inspiration every year, and I never miss them! I find that it is easy to capture a good photo of the blossoms -- but difficult to capture a GREAT one that truly captures their effervescent and frothy nature. Yoshiko Ratliff

Studio 203

"I am a painter and an award-winning ceramicist. My paintings combine abstract and representational forms and structures. I strive to discover and use various techniques, materials, and surfaces to expand and enliven my vision and means of artistic expression.

My works rely on an abstract organic underpainting with shapes, textures and shades forming integral elements of the finished pieces, and often incorporating influences of my Japanese heritage.

I paint in several mediums including acrylic, oil and cold wax, and gold leaf, often blending and combining them where appropriate or interesting."

"Weaving is my art. Natural phenomena inspire my work. Over 25 years, my work has evolved from recreating upholstery fabric to designing decorative and wearable art, and in experimenting with various weaving techniques from ikat to damask. Since 2018, I have focused on creating with a digital Jacquard loom. Jacquard weaving has a rich history since its invention in the 18th century. Recently, small scale looms have become available to individual weavers. I have dedicated the past few years to learning Jacquard weaving from experts in Taiwan, Italy, and Slovenia. As my weaving progresses, I explore the relationship between color and weaving structures. Mixing two, three, or four color yarns with unique structures produces intriguing and unique results. I strive to create unique colors using the fewest possible color yarns through experimenting with different combinations of weaving structures and techniques."

I find my inspiration through the simpler pleasures of life, through communicating with people and nature. With the same sense of wonder I approach the medium I work with, be it watercolor, acrylic or oil. I love to experiment and try new things. I believe there is something for everybody!"
