After reading “4000 Weeks”, a book by Oliver Burkeman, Khing decided to quit his job and opened Top Toast, a slow bar coffee shop and bakery, last year. Since then, he says my life is full of freedom, I’m living my dream!
Khing, 44, is committed to his craft. He is precise in his measurements, he gives a taste before serving to make sure that his coffee is not imbalanced.
The cafe is a tight fit inside Khing’s actual house. He uses the ground floor as the cafe and lives upstairs. He did this intentionally to ensure that he gives every customer the time they deserve. “If there are too many people, he says, “they cannot be comfortable, and the drink may take a long time to make”.
Khing says this with his signature cheerful personality. He get’s overjoyed when walk in customers from Europe walk in unexpectedly. And passionately explains what is available for them to order.
His business grew by word of mouth. First it was his friends who supported him, and now, he takes orders for his loaves through Facebook a day in advance. I work in the morning and by noon, I deliver to my customers.
Now, I can leave at 3 p.m and play badminton with my friends. He brings his badminton from upstairs to show us.
Do I earn less, yes, but I am happy. That's what matters.
Khing is a testimony that doing what you love is how everyone should live their life. And it shows, in the coffee and his signature toast!
