2 Steele Hill Students Displaying Their Skills!

Mimi Patton
Asia McIlwain
Mimi & Asia

The 105th Session of the Lancaster District Conference convened Thursday night at Steele Hill, with the Oratorical Contest. Students from the District churches displayed their oratorical skills in a judged contest. All of the students did a great job! They were grouped by age. Mimi in the Junior Division and Asia in the Senior Division.

In each division, there were first and second place winners, and we’re proud to announce that Asia took home the top spot in the Senior Division! The winners from the Junior Division were from other churches, and I don’t have their names at this moment.

We encourage both Mimi and Asia to continue their journey in oratorical contests. Participating not only helps improve communication skills but also boosts confidence—essential skills for both career and life.

Keep up the great work!

Topic: Questions About Stewardship

Part I (August 25)

Who Is Your Master?

Matthew 6:24

No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.

Part II (September 1, 2024)

Subject: What Is A Tithe?

Scripture: Malachi 3: 1 -12

3 Behold, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me: and the Lord, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to his temple, even the messenger of the covenant, whom ye delight in: behold, he shall come, saith the Lord of hosts.

2 But who may abide the day of his coming? and who shall stand when he appeareth? for he is like a refiner's fire, and like fullers' soap:

3 And he shall sit as a refiner and purifier of silver: and he shall purify the sons of Levi, and purge them as gold and silver, that they may offer unto the Lord an offering in righteousness.

4 Then shall the offering of Judah and Jerusalem be pleasant unto the Lord, as in the days of old, and as in former years.

5 And I will come near to you to judgment; and I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers, and against the adulterers, and against false swearers, and against those that oppress the hireling in his wages, the widow, and the fatherless, and that turn aside the stranger from his right, and fear not me, saith the Lord of hosts.

6 For I am the Lord, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed.

7 Even from the days of your fathers ye are gone away from mine ordinances, and have not kept them. Return unto me, and I will return unto you, saith the Lord of hosts. But ye said, Wherein shall we return?

8 Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings.

9 Ye are cursed with a curse: for ye have robbed me, even this whole nation.

10 Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.

11 And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, and he shall not destroy the fruits of your ground; neither shall your vine cast her fruit before the time in the field, saith the Lord of hosts.

12 And all nations shall call you blessed: for ye shall be a delightsome land, saith the Lord of hosts.

Part III: Sunday, September 8

Topic: Are You Happy About It?

Scripture: 2 Corinthians 9: 1 - 8

9 For as touching the ministering to the saints, it is superfluous for me to write to you:

2 For I know the forwardness of your mind, for which I boast of you to them of Macedonia, that Achaia was ready a year ago; and your zeal hath provoked very many.

3 Yet have I sent the brethren, lest our boasting of you should be in vain in this behalf; that, as I said, ye may be ready:

4 Lest haply if they of Macedonia come with me, and find you unprepared, we (that we say not, ye) should be ashamed in this same confident boasting.

5 Therefore I thought it necessary to exhort the brethren, that they would go before unto you, and make up beforehand your bounty, whereof ye had notice before, that the same might be ready, as a matter of bounty, and not as of covetousness.

6 But this I say, He which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully.

7 Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.

8 And God is able to make all grace abound toward you; that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work:

  • Cheerfully Contributed

Part IV: September 15, 2024

Topic: Where's The Money?

Scripture: Matthew 7: 15 - 20

15 Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.

16 Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?

17 Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit.

18 A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.

19 Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.

20 Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.

His biggest fan is gone, but Indian Land’s Jamol Horton keeps on running

Jamol Horton hopes to celebrate his mother’s birthday by running for several touchdowns Friday night.

Jamal Horton, Indian Land High School

After all, his mother cheered him on during his days of Pop Warner football and then as a freshman at Charlotte’s Harding University High. And she got to see her son switch from quarterback to running back and become a standout at Indian Land High. But any celebration will be a bit empty Friday night.

“Life goes on,” said Horton, a junior running back. “There are times when I get sad. But I don’t let the negative get to me.” Lorraine Horton, Jamol’s mother, died in July of cancer — a little more than six months after Jamol’s sister, Salita, was killed in a car wreck.

“So much has gone against this guy,” said Indian Land head coach Adam Hastings. “A lot of other kids would’ve gone off the rail. Not him.” Indian Land, off to a 3-0 start, entertains cross-border neighbor Marvin Ridge (2-2) at 7:30 p.m. Friday. Hastings said the Warrior community is planning to observe what would have been Lorraine Horton’s 56th birthday as a way of supporting her son. “The community has become his family,” Hastings said.

Supported by teammates Before last November, “family” meant Lorraine, Salita and Jamol. Mother and son only had a few months to cope with Salita’s death before Lorraine was diagnosed in March with cancer. Four months later, she was gone.

Community support Horton, who now lives with family members, said the northern Lancaster County community has rallied around him.

I feel their support all the time,” he said. “They’re always offering to help me. People will stop and talk to me, and I like that. It makes me feel supported.” “It’s the same way with my teammates,” he added. “They energize me. They pick me up.” And, he added, Hastings and the rest of the Warriors’ coaching staff has been a big support. “Now, don’t get me wrong — Coach Hastings will get on you, if he feels you need it,” Horton said with a chuckle. “But he’s always there for you. I know that he and the other coaches have my back.”

“I look at pictures of my mother and remember the good times,” he said. “But when I start feeling sad, I seem to get the energy to go on.” “He’s an optimistic guy,” Hastings said. “Imagine everything he’s gone through! And yet he’s one of the most positive-thinking people you’ll meet.” Horton said his ability to bounce back and see the positive is a gift from his mother. “That’s the way she was,” he said. “I picked it up.” Horton, who has hopes of playing college football, said that Indian Land’s unbeaten start is just the beginning of what the team can do this fall. NASA's 'Hidden Figures' awarded Congressional Gold Medal for groundbreaking work

The group of female mathematicians and engineers were honored in a ceremony.

A group of Black female mathematicians, aeronautical engineers and human computers whose groundbreaking work for NASA during the 20th century space race contributed to the nation's historic achievements were awarded the Congressional Gold Medal during a ceremony Wednesday on Capitol Hill.

The honorees were recognized with the nation's highest civilian honor and include three women who became known as NASA's "Hidden Figures" -- NASA's first black female engineer Mary Jackson and mathematicians Katherine Johnson and Dorothy Vaughan -- whose work helped pave the way for the first American astronaut to successfully orbit the Earth.

All three women were honored posthumously on Wednesday, with their families attending the ceremony to accept the awards on their behalf.

House Speaker Mike Johnson, who delivered opening remarks during the ceremony, described the women as "giants on whose shoulders all of those astronauts actually stood at a time … when our nation was divided by color and often by gender."

"These women dared to step into the fields where they had previously been unwelcomed. They excelled in science and math and made groundbreaking contributions in aeronautics. But these women didn't just crunch numbers and solve equations for the space program," Johnson said. "They actually laid the very foundation upon which our rockets launched and our astronauts flew and our nation soared."

"Although we call them, 'Hidden Figures,' we shouldn't think of them merely as supporting characters in the American story of space exploration," he continued. "They were the engineers and mathematicians who actually wrote the story itself."

The Congressional Gold Medal was also awarded Wednesday to aeronautical engineer Christine Darden, who is "internationally known for her research into supersonic aircraft noise, especially sonic boom reduction," according to NASA, and became the first Black woman at NASA Langley to be appointed to the top management rank of Senior Executive Service.

"The pioneers that we honor today, these 'Hidden Figures,' their courage and imagination brought us to the moon, and their lessons, their legacy will send us back to the moon, and then imagine, just imagine, when we leave our footprints on the red sands of Mars," he said. "Thanks to these people who are part of our NASA family, we will continue to sail on the cosmic sea to far off shores." (abcnews.com)
