AL-Set Zakeya
As an old woman who had lived on this storied street since its inception, I, AL-Set Zakeya, shall share its tales. In the Mamluk era, AL-Mu'izz Street held a special place, preserving traditions that stood the test of time.
AL-Mu'izz Lidin Allah Street, also known as AL-Moez Street, was a bustling thoroughfare filled with shops and markets. From Bab al-Futuh to Bab Zuweila, it boasted an impressive number of approximately 1,200 shops.
It was forbidden to deface the beauty of its architecture, fortresses, or leave any water source uncovered. To illuminate the street at night, a law required every shop owner to hang lanterns, casting a warm glow on this vibrant thoroughfare.
Safety was paramount. Each shop owner had a "zir," a container filled with water, ready to combat any sudden outbreak of fire. Garbage workers, cleaners, sweepers, and security guards diligently maintained the street's cleanliness and security.
