Welcome to the August 2024 newsletter from Lydon Contracting Ltd. We're proud of the work we do and want to share our latest news, useful information and staff updates.
Back on the road
Works have continued well in August for the new HV Infrastructure for the National Express Bus depot in Perry Barr Birmingham.
Excavation and reinstatement of the new dual circuit duct installation along Aldridge Road has seen two traffic sensitive areas completed this month while the schools are on holiday.
The road closure on Holford Drive required the teams to work over two consecutive weekends to clear critical access points for business premise, reducing the impact our works have on the local businesses.
Switching it on
This month we mobilised a new major project in Sheffield where we will be constructing a new 33kV/11kV switch room/control room building for a new commercial development. The scope of works includes:
- 2No. 33/11kV transformer plinths.
- Retaining wall (3m high)
- In situ concrete steps due to the gradient of the compound ground levels.
- Palisade fencing around the perimeter and the TX bunds.
Fenced in
Works at our 33kV & 11kV substation compound project at Bicester has seen good progress during August.
All concrete bases have been completed, kerb lines and the palisade fencing is being installed in readiness for the delivery of equipment.
Final finishing works and road construction is programmed for later in the year (once all equipment has been landed and installed).
Rural working
Works commenced in August on phase 2 of a major HV diversion for the HS2 project near Warwick. The works were carried out under a road closure on the initial phase of works and then along a narrow lane which required unrestricted access to house frontages and farmyard.
All civil installations and reinstatement were completed to programme (including additional works instructed whilst on site).
Remains of the day
This month saw another primary substation project mobilise, this time in Graven Hill, Bicester. Before the main substation works can commence, we have been instructed by the developer to construct the new access and roadway that will service the new substation and development site.
As part of the ecological assessment, we have been working alongside an archaeologist who has been observing our initial ground stripping and reduce dig in case of any items of interest (Roman remains have been found in the local vicinity).
So far, we have only found some old golf balls! Look out in the coming months to see progress with this project.
Going underground
Collaborative working continued within the road closure in the heart of London where we are carrying out multiple excavations for a new HV supply to feed The Earls Court Development.
Due to the amount of existing utilities and the depth required, we produced a Temporary Works design within a short period of time to ensure the works continued and were completed in the programme durations.
Inspiring future generations
Last month we had two work experience students from the local secondary school in Towcester experiencing the world of Lydon Contracting!
Between the various departments we put together a mini programme for their 2-week experience to ensure they got to understand all aspects of the business, including assisting in the yard, visits to some of our local work sites and spending time in the office.
It was great to receive some lovely feedback from their time with us (even with the early morning starts!).

Tell us about yourself, what do you like doing in your spare time?
When I am not working, I am most probably on a motorbike, whether it is at a motorcross meet, enduro riding (cross-country) or on a road bike. A highlight of my year is heading across the Irish sea to the Isle of Man to watch the TT racing with my son. Outside of this my girlfriend keeps horses so any other free time will be spent looking after them.
