Adobe Founders Tower

Yosemite National Park is known for its vast waterfalls, giant sequoia trees, and copious amounts of granite rock formations, including Half Dome, El Capitan, and Glacier Point. People come from far and wide to this historic park to take in the sights and witness the valley in all its glory, but this natural wonder isn’t contained to the National Park, it extends to the entire Yosemite Valley.

K+W sent surveyors into the oft-overlooked gem of Yosemite Lakes, scaling the Sierra Nevada’s and wandering trails to locate section corners and monuments. The K+W team hiked and scaled mountain sides that hadn’t been studied since the 60’s to mark property boundaries for a new solar project.

The team successfully completed the challenging and adventurous survey, setting the pace for the Yosemite Park solar project.

Jack Farrell Park

In the heart of East Palo Alto stands Jack Farrell Park, once a vibrant gathering place for the community - its spirit now threatened by age and social challenges.

Determined to restore their beloved park to its former glory, the community banded together, united by a shared vision of revitalization and hope. With compasses pointed toward altruism and spirits ablaze with determination, the K+W surveyors set out to aide the community in tackling the social challenges surrounding the park.

Volunteering their time, K+W surveyors embarked on a remarkable journey of collaboration and determination. Like intrepid explorers charting uncharted territories, they meticulously conducted a topographic survey and used the elite Wingtra drone to capture the park's essence from above. Laying the foundation to reinvigorate Jack Farrell Park and reawaken the community's spirit.

Mormon Peak in Death Valley National Park

Helicopters are amazing machines. They carry you through the air to remote destinations; where the sky becomes part of your world, and the horizon reveals its secrets. No longer simply a terrestrial being, you feel the thrill of flight and the compression of time as you travel great distances in only a moment. Surveyors often find themselves in mountainous and inaccessible places, where the only way in is from above.

When tasked with surveying a 1982-era Microwave Tower at the top of Mormon Peak in Death Valley, surveyor Casey Lynch’s team was dropped in by helicopter at 8,270’. With minimal gear and old-school determination, the team successfully completed a challenging topographic survey and 3D Terrestrial Laser Scan of the remote site: the only source of phone communication throughout the entire Death Valley National Park.

Buffalo Run Ranch

Compass in hand, aided by GPS and standard instruments, you traverse ground that has laid untouched for a 150-year. Amidst the wild expanse, you're on the hunt for a monument relic from 1866, a marker lost in the annals of history. Every twist and turn of the landscape presents a new challenge, a new puzzle to solve in your quest to uncover the secrets of the past. Your surveying team has been contracted to retrace 6 sections of a 30,000-acre unincorporated area of rock faces, loose shale, and steep cliffs reaching over 6,000 feet. Bordering San Benito and Monterey Counties northeast of Paso Robles, the Buffalo Run Ranch terrain is unforgiving and most of the markers are so old they are literally buried underground. The border dispute has been ongoing, and the resolution is now dependent on the accuracy of the Sectionalized Land Breakdown your team is providing to the owner.

“Hey!” the crew chief shouts with an urgency that halts you in your tracks, “there are rattlesnakes all through here. Keep your eyes and ears open!” You stay frozen for a few, and then carefully start moving. As you hit the rockface you climb to where the original survey shows a marker. There it is. An old oak tree with a blaze cut deep into the trunk. “Man”, you think to yourself, “those old timers were really good, right where it should be.” Whoops, just like Indiana Jones, the snakes always make an appearance.
