Applied, Project-Based Learning in Action!
In "Honors Business Writing" at the IU Kelley School of Business, we believe in pursuing 21st-century learning outcomes that equip students not just to succeed but to thrive. We also believe that the most transferrable, durable learning comes from hands-on, collaborative experimentation.
As just one example of this scaffolded, active-learning pedagogy, Dr. Rodak's C205 sections are running a semester-long generative AI experiment during Fall 2024 where every student hires and collaborates with their own generative AI consultant throughout individual and team-based projects. The goal is for students to:
- learn the variety of tasks genAI can execute,
- develop the AI literacies necessary to work effectively with genAI, and
- analyze how genAI can support growth-minded learning (i.e., not displace or replace learning)
PART 1: The Hire
Before we could start working with our consultants, first we had to hire them. Students reviewed the conventions of the job ad genre and then individually wrote their own job ad to hire their consultant. Students then "hired" their chosen consultant by (a) choosing which bot they wanted to experiment with consistently over the course of the semester, and (b) writing their "new hire" documentation. These activities served to help students:
- analyze the rhetorical "moves" of the job advertisement genre
- consider both the ethical and practical considerations of using genAI in their learning process and school work as, together, we read a variety of texts to frame our debates about the nature of "writing," "writing technologies," and "durable, growth-minded learning"
- articulate the appropriate duties and boundaries surrounding the effective use of AI in a learning environment (which differs in important ways from a professional environment)
- practice crafting clear, concise, concrete, and compelling professional prose
PART 2: The Consultants
As part of the "hiring process," students were asked to introduce their consultant to our class by writing a brief introduction and using Adobe Firefly (a visual generative AI tool) to create their consultant's avatar. The only limitation was that Dr. Rodak asked students not to create a "fully human" avatar since she believes strongly that being able to differentiate the "human in the AI loop" (to use Ethan Mollick's phrase) will become an increasingly important AI literacy skill.
