Orientation Day: Welcome to the Class of 2031

This week, we had the pleasure of welcoming the Class of 2031 to Year 7 Orientation Day at South Sydney High. Approximately 150 students, along with their parents, gathered in the Hall where they were warmly welcomed and given important information about starting high school. Following the introduction, students enjoyed a guided tour of the school and participated in engaging activities designed to introduce them to the South Sydney community. Each student also received a show bag filled with helpful information to support their transition. We are excited to build on this positive start with an expanded range of orientation activities planned for Term 1 2026, to ensure our new students feel supported and ready for their high school journey.

Sista Speak Day

Emma, Hannah, Leila and Micah recently attended their second Botany Bay Network Sista Speak Day. These special events are designed to support the wellbeing and empowerment of Aboriginal girls from Years 4 to 9, providing a unique and enriching experience tailored especially for them. Sista Speak is a valued program which creates a safe, nurturing, and empowering environment where Aboriginal female students can come together to share their stories, embrace their identities, and build strong connections within their community. It is a space which encourages self-expression, fosters leadership, and promotes cultural pride. The program for the day included a variety of engaging sessions:

  • Connection and Wellbeing Session: Activities to promote mental, emotional, and physical wellbeing.
  • On Country Walk: Guided by The Gamay Rangers, this walk offered an opportunity to connect with the land and sea and learn about its significance.
  • Bush Tucker Cooking: Participants learned how to prepare traditional bush foods using local native ingredients.
  • Community Afternoon Tea and Celebration: A special gathering where carers and female community members were invited to join in recognising and celebrating the achievements and spirit of our young women.

It was such an interesting and enriching day!

Schools Spectacular

Last week, seven of our students took to the stage at Qudos Bank Arena as part of the Schools Spectacular - an elite production featuring over 5,000 student performers from across NSW. It’s incredibly competitive to get into, making our first-ever acceptance a huge achievement. After weeks of rehearsals and four massive shows, the girls delivered an unforgettable performance. When the final curtain fell, there were tears of joy. Proof of just how special the experience was. We are so proud of their dedication, talent and the way they represented South Sydney High School on such a big stage.

Great performance girls!
Some lucky students got to attend & watch the Schools Spectacular and support SSHS!

Men’s & Women’s Wellbeing Day

On Thursday the 27th November, Year 10 students were involved in an amazing day where we learnt about how important it was to check in with our emotions, support our peers, and other deeply important mental health considerations. Both the girls and the boys who took part in this program were grateful for the opportunity to be guided by mentors, our teachers and the presenters from Tomorrow Man & Tomorrow Woman. Not many schools attempt such programs because of the cost and time it requires of our teachers and for the presentations. South Sydney High School believes it is a priority that our Wellbeing is developed. We would like to thank the following people - Mr Wood, Mrs Stell, Mr Dartchia, Mr Yasaman, Mr Warrington, Ms Mackenzie, Ms Ansoul, Mrs Maddocks, the ancillary staff, Ms Drakopoulos, the mentors who attended c/o Macquarie Telecom, Paul MacMullen, United Way, Alumni Students from 1974, Mike Owen, Paul Mallam and Corey Roberts. Thank you of course to our fantastic Principal Mrs Janice Neilsen for overseeing this most important day!

The day exceeded everyone's expectations! Student Ambassadors of the SSHS Opportunity Program 2025

Spotlight - Career Ideas

Dental Technician What is a Dental Technician? A dental technician designs and creates the dental devices that help people smile with confidence. Think crowns, dentures, bridges, and orthodontic appliances. Working mostly behind the scenes in a dental laboratory, they use a mix of science, art and technology to craft precise, custom-made pieces that fit each patient perfectly. Dental technicians don’t work directly with patients but play a key role in supporting dentists and dental specialists. What skills and strengths are needed? Dental technicians need a sharp eye for detail and excellent hand–eye coordination. Much of their work involves shaping tiny materials and using specialised equipment, so patience and precision are essential. Creativity also comes in handy when designing realistic-looking teeth and choosing shades and shapes that look natural. Other important strengths include problem-solving, teamwork, and an interest in how science and technology combine to improve people’s health. What are the pathways? You can start by studying science, design, or health subjects at school, as these build the foundation for further training. After finishing school, most dental technicians complete a Diploma or Degree in Dental Technology through a TAFE, polytechnic, or university, depending on where you live. Work placements are a big part of this training - you’ll gain hands-on experience in dental labs, learning how to use specialised tools and digital design software. Once qualified, you can specialise in areas like orthodontics, ceramics, or maxillofacial prosthetics, or even move into lab management and dental product design. Teacher You don't need to have all the answers or be a certain type of person to become a teacher — but you do need to have a love of helping others learn and grow. What is a Teacher? Teachers work in education, supporting students’ development academically, socially, and emotionally.

  • Early Learning Educators guide and nurture children in their most important early years
  • Primary School Teachers teach a broad range of subjects to children from Foundation to Year 6, building essential skills for life.
  • Secondary School Teachers specialise in particular subjects for students from Year 7 to Year 12, preparing them for further study or work.

What skills and strengths are needed? Teachers need strong communication skills and must be able to build positive relationships with students, families, and colleagues. They must be adaptable, organised, patient, and confident in managing a classroom. Teachers also need creativity and a passion for learning, so they can inspire and engage young people every day. What are the pathways? You usually need to study Education at university. There are several options:

  • A Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood, Primary, or Secondary)
  • A Double Degree (e.g., Arts/Education or Science/Education for Secondary teachers)
  • If you already hold a degree in another field, you can become a teacher through a Master of Teaching program.

Some states also offer pathways that combine teaching with practical placements to get you classroom-ready faster.

Scholarships and Traineeships

Here’s how to find scholarships and traineeships that can help to launch your next chapter: Start With A Scholarship Search There are hundreds of scholarships across Australia designed to financially support students just like you. Start your search early on your school’s careers portal, university and TAFE websites, and through national databases like StudyAssist and the Good Universities Guide. Many institutions release new rounds of funding just before or after offers come out, so set reminders to check regularly. Apply Smart When it comes to applications, quality matters more than quantity. Read the eligibility criteria carefully and tailor each application to what the organisation values most. Use real examples, such as how you helped organise a school event, volunteered in your community, or showed resilience balancing study and part-time work. Don’t be afraid to ask for help - teachers, careers staff, or even family members can proofread your application and help you polish your responses. Explore Traineeships Traineeships let you earn while you learn, combining paid work with study in industries such as business, health, trades, IT, and community services. Programs often start in January or February, so it’s a great time to apply. Search openings on Australian Apprenticeships Pathways or your state’s training website such as TAFE NSW. Some employers even offer transition programs for Year 12 graduates, so it’s worth reaching out early. Keep An Open Mind Whether you land a scholarship, start a traineeship, or take time to explore different pathway options, every experience helps you grow. Stay organised, meet deadlines, and remember - there’s more than one road success. Be curious, proactive, and ready to grab the opportunities that come your way!
