Sixth Form Newsletter 11th October 2024

Welcome

Dear Parents and Guardians,

We hope this newsletter finds you well. As we settle into the new school year, I am delighted to share some updates about the positive start our Sixth Form students have made since returning in September.

A Strong Start

From the very first day, our students have returned with a clear focus and enthusiasm for their studies. Their positive attitude has been evident in the way they’ve embraced new challenges, shown resilience in adjusting to a higher level of academic work, and demonstrated a commitment to making the most of their time in Sixth Form. It’s been inspiring to see how well they’ve transitioned back into the routine and responsibilities that come with this important stage of their education.

Academic Engagement

Our teachers have reported high levels of engagement in the classroom, with students actively participating in discussions and approaching their work with diligence. Many students are already showing signs of great progress, which bodes well for the rest of the year. We are confident that with continued focus and dedication, they will achieve their personal goals and meet the high expectations we have set.

Enrichment and Extracurricular Opportunities

Beyond the classroom, we have seen an encouraging number of students getting involved in our enrichment and extracurricular programs. These activities are essential in developing skills that go beyond academic achievement, such as leadership, teamwork, and community involvement such as supporting lower school at break and lunch times. In particular we are really proud of how many students have signed up to mentor lower school students and want to give back to the school community.

Looking Ahead

As we move further into the term, we look forward to continuing this momentum. Our students are laying the foundations for a successful year, and we are committed to supporting them in every aspect of their journey.

We want to thank you for your ongoing support as parents and guardians. Your encouragement at home plays a crucial role in helping your children thrive. Please do not hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions or concerns, and we look forward to updating you again soon.

Kind regards,

Mr York - Head of Sixth Form

Supporting Year 12 and Year 13 in Their Next Steps

Our Year 12 students have been actively learning about the university application process, including how to write compelling personal statements. Throughout the year, they will explore all post-A Level pathways, including apprenticeships and employment opportunities, ensuring they have the knowledge and tools to pursue the routes that best suit their ambitions.

. Please follow the link to view the parent/carer guide, which includes important information about the application process, such as how to apply, financial details, key dates, apprenticeships, and much more. Parent and Carer UCAS guide 2025.

Meanwhile, our Year 13 students have been focused on crafting their personal statements and researching courses and universities that align with their goals. They are receiving valuable support from their form tutor, who provides personalised advice and guidance to help each student make informed decisions about their future.

PSHCE
Year 12: Focus on Health & Wellbeing

At the beginning of Term 1, Year 12 students have delved into the critical topic of Health and Wellbeing. This unit covers key areas essential for their personal development, including:

  • Mental Health & Emotional Wellbeing: Understanding the importance of maintaining mental balance and emotional health in everyday life.
  • Managing Stress: Learning practical strategies to cope with stress in academic and personal contexts.
  • Body Image: Exploring the impact of societal standards on self-perception and promoting a positive body image.
  • Healthy Coping Strategies: Equipping students with effective methods to manage challenges in a healthy and constructive way.
Year 13: Developing Independence

In contrast, Year 13 students are focusing on the theme of Independence, essential for their transition into adulthood. This includes:

  • Responsible Health Choices: Encouraging informed decision-making when it comes to personal health.
  • Managing Change: Preparing students to handle life transitions and change with resilience.
  • Health & Wellbeing in Adulthood: Understanding the significance of long-term health, including sexual health, as they move towards adulthood.
Volunteering

Students have been generously volunteering their break and lunch times to support younger peers in the lower school. They assist in monitoring designated zones, guiding students to make positive choices, and serving as inspiring role models. Their commitment not only helps to foster a supportive and positive environment but also demonstrates leadership and a strong sense of community.

Mentoring Programme

We are introducing a mentor program where Sixth Form students will be paired with Year 8 mentees to offer guidance and support. Mentors will work alongside their mentees using a structured booklet designed to encourage meaningful conversations, build connections, and inspire our younger students. This initiative will not only benefit the Year 8 students, but it will also provide valuable experience for Sixth Formers, enhancing their personal statements and university applications. We plan to launch the program at the start of next term.

Step Up Programme at New College, Oxford

On Thursday, October 10th, Shelby from the Step Up Programme at New College, Oxford, visited Lodge Park Academy to engage with our Year 12 students. This marks the third year that our academy has partnered with this inspiring initiative, which aims to support state-school students throughout Years 11, 12, and 13. The programme is dedicated to helping students recognise that attending Oxford is a realistic and achievable goal for their future. We are proud to be one of only 41 schools across the country involved in the Step Up Programme.

During the visit, our Year 12 students engaged in Step 3 of their journey, focusing on the university application process and strategies for becoming successful candidates. The insights gained from these sessions were invaluable, and students are looking forward to completing Step 4 later this academic year, which will cover personal statement writing.

As our Year 13 students enter their final year in the programme, they will benefit from an interview workshop to prepare them for their university applications.

We are excited about the opportunities the Step Up Programme provides and look forward to continuing our partnership with New College, Oxford.
