HamWeg Galaxy ONLINE ENCYCLOPEDIA - Hermesseum

The Hermesseum was a colossal trading post visited by many nations from across the ancient world. The trading post was named to honor the Olympic GOD of commerce and trade, Hermes. The Hermesseum was so massive it covered the entire Southern coast of Atlantis and hosted anywhere from two hundred to a four hundred visitors a day.

The Hermesseum Complex

The Hermesseum's buildings had a number of different functions, predominantly commercial. Constructed on three different levels built into the terraced hillside. The ground level alcoves opened onto a street and were used for small shops whilst there were bigger shops in the arcades above. The ground level alcoves are of uneven depth due to the fact that they were constructed following the bedrock of the coast.

The principal products sold at the market would have come from across the ancient world and included weapons, clothing, fruits, vegetables, wine, and spices such as pepper.

The large uppermost central building was used as an apartment block housing up to ten families with the large structure further left functioning as a covered shopping center. White stucco covered much of the brickwork and buildings with their triangular windows painted gold, blue and red.

The whole Hermesseum complex became part of a defensive fortress during Poseidon's jealous siege that finally crushed Atlantis sinking it to the bottom of the Aegean Sea.
