The Project in Review
Working with my group this semester was a dynamic and eye-opening experience. From the outset, our team was diverse in both communication styles and perspectives, which made collaboration both enriching and, at times, challenging. Personally, I found the experience to be a valuable opportunity to apply the interpersonal and small group communication theories we studied in class to a real-world context.
1. Personal Experience
My experience was largely positive. I appreciated how our group gradually developed a rhythm of collaboration. Initially, we were cautious and somewhat reserved, but as we progressed through our service project, we became more comfortable expressing ideas, giving feedback, and dividing responsibilities. I took on the role of coordinator, helping to schedule meetings and keep us on track with deadlines. This role pushed me to be more assertive and organized than I usually am in group settings.
2. Challenges
One of the biggest challenges was navigating different communication preferences. Some group members preferred texting, while others favored email or live meetings. This occasionally led to miscommunication or delays in responses. Another challenge was balancing workloads—some members were more proactive than others, which created tension during the early stages of the project. We had to have an open conversation about expectations and accountability, which was uncomfortable but ultimately helpful.
3. Rewards
The most rewarding part of the experience was seeing our project come together and realizing how much we had grown as a team. Presenting our findings and reflecting on our group process gave me a sense of accomplishment. I also appreciated the opportunity to build relationships with classmates I might not have interacted with otherwise. The project helped me feel more connected to the course content and to the university community.
4. Lessons Learned
I learned that effective group work requires more than just dividing tasks—it requires intentional communication, empathy, and flexibility. I also learned the importance of establishing group norms early on. When we finally agreed on a shared calendar and communication platform, our productivity improved significantly. Another key lesson was the value of active listening. When I made an effort to truly understand my teammates’ perspectives, our discussions became more collaborative and less transactional.
5. Application of Communication Skills
Applying group communication concepts from class was incredibly useful. For example, understanding Tuckman’s stages of group development helped me recognize that our initial awkwardness was normal and temporary. We also used reflective listening techniques and conflict resolution strategies we learned in class, which helped us navigate disagreements constructively. These tools made our group more cohesive and our meetings more efficient.
6. Future Approach to Group Work
This experience has changed how I will approach group work in the future. I now see the value of investing time in relationship-building and setting clear expectations from the start. Whether I’m working with classmates, colleagues, friends, or family, I’ll be more intentional about how I communicate and collaborate. I’ll also be more proactive in addressing issues early, rather than letting them fester. Most importantly, I’ll bring a mindset of curiosity and respect to every group I’m part of, knowing that diverse perspectives can lead to stronger outcomes when managed well.
