This week in science, we explored and examined a range of different materials. We spent time looking closely, feeling the textures, and talking about what made some materials similar or different from others. We also discussed the properties of the materials, thinking about why they would be used for a particular object.
We then looked at a variety of different objects, identified what materials they were made from, and sorted them into groups based on their properties.
As part of our Mantle lesson, a surprise visitor appeared asking the children for their help. The visitor was from the safety department and needed us to carry out an inspection of our school yard and the equipment there. The children got straight to work, recording their observations about the different materials and discussed whether they were safe for children to use. They showed fantastic teamwork and used great imagination throughout.
Next, we looked at images of playground equipment from around the world, and the children thought about whether the equipment looked safe or not. They gave thoughtful reasons for their ideas and showed fantastic oracy skills when explaining their thinking. To finish, the children grouped different equipment into “safe” or “dangerous” categories, helping them to consider how design and materials can affect safety.
