YSGOL GYFUN TREDEGAR COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL summer NEWSLETTER 2024

A message from our Headteacher

As the end of the summer term approaches, it is time to reflect on what a fantastic term it has been!

We have had a series of great activities going on, from residential trips to day visits to in-school activities, including our first Duke of Edinburgh team, who successfully navigated their way across fields and mountains on their 2-day expedition.

Our Year 11 did themselves very proud throughout what was a long and tiring exam season, giving their absolute best, and it was a pleasure at the end of June to enjoy a fabulous Prom, with learners all in the finery letting their hair down! We will now look forward to celebrating their GCSE results on 22nd August.

Our Transition days went really well with our new cohort really impressing staff and students alike with their kindness, curiosity and determination as they overcame any lingering nerves to settle in well to the school. They threw themselves into their lessons and activities with real enthusiasm and certainly made a great first impression!

One of the greatest spectacles of the term was our stunning 4-night ‘sell-out’ production of ‘Les Misèrables’ in the Beaufort Theatre. Such an event was a true testament to the brilliance and talent of all learners and staff involved, and for those of us lucky enough to have witnessed the show, the hard work, perseverance and creative excellence was simply overwhelming! Très magnifique!

We have also enjoyed our first Sports Awards Evening, with our wonderful guest speaker Paul Thorburn, which allowed us to recognise and celebrate the outstanding sporting talent and prowess that we have here in our school.

As well as celebrating all the successes of the learners this term, the school are delighted to inform you that we have secured the Right Respecting School Award (Gold), the Allegiance Award for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion, the Siarter Iaith (Silver), the Anti-Bullying Quality Mark (Gold) and the reaccreditation of our NACE award for More Able and Talented provision. Absolutely outstanding achievements and a huge thank you to everyone involved.

It would be remiss of me not to recognise and wholeheartedly thank the work of the phenomenal staff here in our school. Teachers, Teaching Assistants and all our Support Staff work incredibly hard all year to realise our vision and ensure we provide an outstanding, holistic education for every pupil. Our learners have the most fantastic educational experiences, and we are rewarded by the amazing behaviour, engagement and enjoyment of nearly all our students.

Finally, I would like to thank you, our Governors, families and friends, for supporting us throughout this academic year and for fully embracing our school motto of ‘Working Together for Success’.

Have a wonderful summer break and I will look forward to seeing our learners on Wednesday September 4th.

Mrs C. Leaves

MATHS

This year has been outstanding for the Mathematics department, and we are incredibly proud of the achievements of all our learners. Throughout KS3, our Year 7 and Year 8 pupils have developed new mathematical skills, engaged in logical reasoning, and participated in problem-solving activities, all of which have led to a more fluent understanding of the subject. Our KS4 and GCSE students have also shown excellent progress, making significant strides towards their qualifications and preparing for experiences beyond their current studies.

GCSE

GCSE Our Year 11 pupils have been working tirelessly this year to achieve their best possible grades in both Numeracy and Mathematics. Their commitment was evident as they attended after-school and holiday sessions, demonstrating remarkable aspiration and resilience. We are incredibly proud of their efforts and look forward to seeing them on results day in August.

Financial studies

This year, pupils from Years 9, 10, and 11 have achieved immense success in Financial Studies with the London Institute of Banking & Finance (LIBF). As a result, a significant number of pupils have already secured GCSE grades ranging from C to A*. We will continue offering this qualification next year, striving to ensure that every pupil in Years 10 and 11 attains their qualification, with as many successful grades as possible.

UKMT

This term, our Year 7 and 8 pupils entered the UK Maths Trust Challenge with phenomenal results! We saw amazing effort from everyone involved, and it was incredible to see so many of our Year 8 pupils improving on their results from last year.

Sparx

Maths Sparx maths has been a significant part of our pupil’s learning experience for the last 2 years and has shown us how well our pupils can achieve when they challenge themselves, The impact is evident with those engaging positively, gaining confidence and improving their score and understanding significantly. We have some celebrations as well with pupils from each year group gaining recognition for their achievements and efforts from the Sparx creators themselves.

Trips This year, our pupils have had the opportunity to attend various trips, including visits to universities and colleges to explore Mathematics and Science. Notably, we had the chance to visit the birthplace of British code breaking with a day trip to Bletchley Park, a collaborative effort between the Maths, ICT, and Computer Science departments.

Reminder of equipment

The following equipment is advised for every pupil in Mathematics; Casio FX-83GTX, Ruler Pencils Pen (black or blue) and Compasses

Again, I cannot stress how proud we are of our pupils in the maths department, 2024 has been an incredible year, and we look forward to seeing all their successes in 2024-25. Follow us on Twitter; @MathsTredegar

ENGLISH

We would like to congratulate our wonderful pupils on their hard work this year. We have been working very hard in English as we have been developing our skills in reading, writing and spoken communication

Year 7

Year 7 have been engaging with great gusto and aplomb with our exciting schemes of learning. This term, they have been learning all about the origins of language, and why and how language continues to evolve. They have been reading one of the oldest literary texts in the history of the English language - the adrenaline-fuelled Viking tale of Beowulf!

Year 8

Year 8 have really enjoyed becoming astute film and media critics through their media study topic of Speilberg’s classic ‘JAWS.’ Pupils have analysed aspects of the horror genre, as well as how Speilberg subverts these expectations for effect. Some pupils have probed further into studying topics to do with ‘Disasters,’ providing an excellent ESDGC link and seeing how effective communication can help us in times of trouble.

Year 9

We would like to congratulate the year group on the completion of their first NEA for GCSE English Literature! The pupils have completed an in-depth study of Shakespeare’s Macbeth, and have written an analytical essay on a key question of the play. Pupils showed immense fortitude and resilience when engaging with such challenging material, and we are very proud of them.

Year 10

Firstly, we wish to congratulate Year 10 on the completion of their GCSE English Literature qualification; we wish you all the very best for results day! Since their last exam, Year 10 have been busy beginning their new GCSE English Language specification. They have been introduced to exam style questions, and have been developing their extended writing skills. When the pupils return as year 11 in the autumn, they will be completing the two NEAs for English Language - an individual presentation and a group discussion. We can’t wait to hear their ideas!

The English department wishes you all the best for a lovely summer.

GEOGRAPHY

All pupils in Year 7 visited Bedwellty House and followed the Aneurin Bevan Heritage Trail in relation to their in class cross curricular Humanities theme ‘Who Am I?’. The trail was part of the NHS 76th anniversary celebrations, which was is an insightful voyage into the industrial and political past of Tredegar, which has forged our identity to the present day.

Continuing with the Humanities theme of ‘Who Am I?’, 45 pupils made the annual visit to the historical venues of Blaenavon Ironworks and Big Pit. As always, we welcome Councillor John Morgan (Governor) for his guided tour of Blaenavon Ironworks.

30 year 7 pupils visited the Reform Synagogue in Cardiff in relation to the Humanities topics of Suffering and 30 pupils from year 8, following their studies of ‘Conflict’ visited the South Wales Islamic Centre in Cardiff Bay.

In Year 10, GCSE Geographers visited Hereford and Sirhowy River to conduct their fieldwork in preparation for their Unit 3 exam.

OUTDOOR LEARNING

ESDGC Week this year was the 10th anniversary of ESDGC week and departments across the school was involved in a selection of activities to celebrate ESDGC that week, with a particular focus on outdoor learning.

Particular thanks to the Spanish and ICT departments for their outdoor learning events. PE also had a very busy week with several sporting occasions, such as sports days, a cricket tournament and American football after school with Mr Whitefoot.

Ms Bowd accompanied the gardening club to events with Gwent Wildlife Trust in Ebbw Vale and Durrell Conversation Trust in Gilwern Outdoor Education Centre.

The Business Studies department organised a visit to the BBC Cymru studios with Year 9 in Cardiff and the Welsh Department are visited Glan Llyn with a range of pupils from across the school. The week prior to ESDGC week, Mrs D'Amato led the Year 8 MAT trip to Westminster and Mr Roles led our Year 7 Forest Schools group in the Forest Schools area.

Congratulations to our Year 11 leavers Coel Hodgkins, Jasmin Fiorini, Ruby Richards, Paige Griffiths, Evan Moore, Owain Moseley-Hunt, Ella Colwell and Isabella D’Amato, who are the first pupils from the school to be awarded the DofE Bronze Award following their successful expedition, expertly coordinated my Mr Roles. This is major flagship for the school’s outdoor learning award.

Looking forward, the school has also arranged a skiing trip to Italy in 2025. 55 pupils have signed up. Some of our more experienced skiers represented the school in the regional school’s championship in April this year. Another excellent performance by our skiers.

There has always been an abundance of outdoor learning opportunities in YGTCS and many Areas of Learning are continuing to offer these wonderful opportunities for our learners. Pupils in Year 7 have also been introduced to the YGTCS Outdoor Learning Award, which all pupils in Year 7 and 8 will achieve a Bronze Award by Autumn Term 2024. Over 30 pupils in Year 10 will be completing their Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award next Summer. There are another 30+ pupils in Year 9 shown their interested in next year following a successful visit and motivational speech by Richard Parks which inspired our learners to consider the DofE award.

If you do not already do so, can you please follow @OutdoorsYGTCS on Twitter and outdoors_ygtcs on Instagram.

RVE

Year 7 have really been setting the pace this term. Much interesting work has been completed on the humanities unit entitled “Suffering – Manmade or natural.

In RVE we have focused on the origins and events of the holocaust.

Although a horrific manmade event the pupils have found the experience interesting and rewarding. This topic has also coincided with a trip to a Synagogue in Cardiff which linked in to the topic well.

The Synagogue had a beautiful remembrance board to the holocaust which the pupils could relate to. All who went enjoyed the experience, staff and pupils!!

Year 8 have in fairness been just as busy. The Humanities unit they have been covering is “Events and Experiences. In RVE students have focusing on the variety of festivals and Rites of Passage celebrated throughout the world.

Firstly pupils have seen how the various religions arrived in the UK.

As with Year 7 this topic has coincided with a trip to a Mosque in Cardiff where such festivals and Rites of passage could be seen and heard. A great day out!!

For each religion selected pupils have looked at what it is like to be a member of a religion in a multicultural society eg being Jewish in Wales???? Or being a Muslim in Wales ????

In the Summer Term trips are planned to visit a Cardiff mosque and synagogue. Can’t wait!!!!

Year 9 are continuing with their GCSE course. This term has meant finishing off the Beliefs and Practices modules. This term has mainly focused on Judaism. Shabbat observance and the Food laws have proved to be the favourite areas covered.

The next academic year will see pupils looking at a variety of moral issues. Pupils are required to give their personal views on these issues and it is it is the most popular part of the course. Topics include Euthanasia, Abortion and Capital Punishment.

Year 10 has all sat the first part of their full GCSE! Well done to all! This will mean a lot less to revise next year. The Good and Evil Unit, plus Life and Death were completed this year. Pupils responded well to these, and personal viewpoints on issues such as “Should we re-introduce Capital Punishment” were mature.

After the exam pupils stayed ahead of the field by starting the year 11 course. In the majority of cases this has been the relationships unit. This has looked at issues such as Family, Marriage, Divorce, Contraception, and gender equality.

We have said goodbye to Year 11 and we wish them well on whatever career path they have chosen.

At the final going off pupils were looking at issues of Human Rights.

This include topics such as Extremism, Censorship, Poverty, Personal conviction and Social Justice

Their exam was focused on topics studied this year. These included Jewish Identity, Rites of Passage and Pilgrimage.

The Department wishes year 11 all the best for the future. For the rest of the year groups we hope you all have a good and relaxing summer break.

Mr West would like to thank all pupils past and present for making his stay in Tredegar such an enjoyable one! May the Force be with you all!

PE

This year has been extraordinary for our PE department, marked by numerous achievements and memorable events. We hosted our first prize evening with the legendary Paul Thorburn as our esteemed guest, adding prestige to the occasion and inspiring our students. Our girls' U14 team showcased their exceptional skills by reaching the latter stages of the Rosslyn Park tournament, a testament to their hard work and dedication. Additionally, our sports days were a resounding success, with enthusiastic participation and spirited competition culminating in the Red House emerging as the overall winners. It's been a year filled with triumphs and unforgettable moments, setting a high bar for the future.

Football

A fantastic start to their football journey at Tredegar Comp for Year 7 boys with numbers at training regularly in excess of 30 pupils. This has meant Mr Rees has been a position where he has been fortunate to field 2 teams. Throughout the season the team has not been beaten in regular time, playing some good flowing football in scoring over 20 goals and conceded only 5. All players give their best effort in games and really want to do the team proud. There is an excellent team spirit as demonstrated when coming back from deficits in games and then players superbly supporting each other after a penalty shoot-out loss. The boys have been a credit to the school and each other and Mr Rees is really excited to kick off the season in Year 8.

Year 8

Mr Watkins ‘Barmy Army’ turned in some excellent team performances throughout the year. They narrowly lost out in the second round of both the Welsh cup and Gwent cup in what can be both described as ‘nailbiters’; where the boys were on the wrong end of the late winning goals. These boys really enjoy their football and continue to show excellent dedication in attending training sessions in all-weathers, displaying a consistent desire to improve their skills.

Year 9

The Year 9 boys’ team were once again the school side who progressed furthest in the national schools cup competition. The boys made final of the SE Wales regional section scoring 23 goals in 4 games. They are a very talented footballing side who boast some exceptional individual performers. The boys remained focussed on a good run in the Welsh cup again next season.

Year 10

Year 10 boys made the third round of the Welsh cup this season where they met some impressive opposition. More recently, the boys put in some fine performances in the recent SE Wales 7 a side competitions. Most pleasing was the progress they made throughout the tournament not only in terms of results but in their application of football understanding as the day progressed.

Year 11

The Year 11 boys were the schools first entrants in the newly arranged Yr. 11 National cup competition, where, led by Mr Strand, the boys topped their group by winning all three games. The boys then lost out in the last 16 to a strong side that ended up making the final. The team has a demonstrated a really strong bond with lots of boys representing the town, in amongst other squad members featuring at academy and national level.

In a lovely way to end their footballing journey at school, where the boys have shown excellent commitment and talent throughout, it all ended a little sourly for the boys however. After ‘giving it the big one’ throughout Year 11, their final game as a school side seen them lose out to the staff team. All jokes aside, we would like to thank the Year 11 boys for their dedication and efforts in representing the school throughout their time at school.

U13 Girls

The girls' football team has shown incredible dedication and perseverance this season, putting in countless hours of practice and giving their best effort in every match. Despite the results not always going in their favour, the team's spirit remains unbroken, and their hard work and commitment to improvement is truly commendable. Their unity and determination on the field demonstrate that success is measured not just by the scoreboard, but by the passion and resilience they bring to the game. We have no doubt the girls will continue to develop and some opposition will be in for a shock in the autumn term.

U15 Girls

After a bye in round 1 and then a hard fought victory in round 2, the girls were awarded a tough away draw where they battled with credit and lost out narrowly to a side that progressed to the latter stages of the competition. Most pleasing with this team is that along with some pupils excelling at academy and national level, the vast majority of girls play for the local town team which mean they show impressive togetherness, heart and spirit whenever they play.

Year 11 Girls

We must give a special mention to our Year 11 female footballers who have been excellent ambassadors throughout their school football journey. Back in Year 8 they lost in the QF of the Welsh cup and then in Year 10 the girls lost out in the SF of the Welsh cup where 1 player from the opposition made all the difference. Reaching the QF and SF of the national cup is a remarkable achievement for us being such a small school in terms of numbers and evidence of the girls’ talent and attitude. Well done girls, thank you for all your efforts and thank you for the memories.

Cricket

Our 3 successful girls' cricket teams have played in numerous tournaments this year. In total we have played 8 tournaments, playing over 20 games where the girls have been able to develop and showcase their skills. The girls have done extremely well in these tournaments, narrowly missing out on going onto the next stage. We have had some excellent performances from our teams this year. The girls have gone the extra mile with their commitment to attending after school clubs, developing themselves and skills and putting this into performing well in the tournaments. I look forward to see how the girls teams get on next year. Da Iawn Merched!

Sports Day

International Languages

Year 7

‘Art’ Fires the imagination and inspires creativity.

This half- term Year 7 have been studying Spanish-speaking artists. Pupils have written about their favourite paintings and discussed them with their partners. They have also been creative and made pictures in the style of Miró.

During ESDGC week, the pupils embraced outdoor learning. We can see Year 7 improving their speaking skills by playing Sentence Stealers in The Quad.

Year 8

It has been a busy half term for Year 8. They have been looking at the Spanish regions, finding out about regional food, sport and music and comparing it to their experiences in Wales.

Pupils have been working hard on their websites to include all of their new findings.

During ESDGC week, a group of Year 8 pupils enjoyed revising numbers outside, through some traditional games.

Year 8 pupils were excited to receive their award for participating and completing the Cardiff University Mentoring Programme. Both groups enjoyed their sessions with the Mentor and we look forward to working with Cardiff University again next year.

History

We have had a wonderful Summer Term in the History Department:

Year 7

Year 7 have fully embraced their ‘Humanities’ themed lessons looking at the theme ‘Suffering’ in their History, Geography and RVE lessons. In History, we have been looking at examples of man-made disasters such as Pearl Harbor, the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Chernobyl and Aberfan. The pupils were then able to make an informed decision on whether natural disasters or man-made disasters are the worst type of suffering. The New Curriculum is centred on 4 key purposes and this theme certainly fulfilled three of these in great depth as pupils certainly became; ‘ambitious, capable learners’, ‘enterprising, creative contributors’, and ‘ethically, informed citizens of Wales and the world’. All pupils thoroughly enjoyed this topic area and also able to make evaluations on whether they believe man-made disasters or natural disasters caused the most suffering. Learners also had the opportunity to experience the 5G Immersive Environment in Ebbw Vale to gain a greater understanding of the discrimination towards the Jewish people and other minority groups through a virtual tour of Auschwtiz-Birkenau.

Year 8

During the summer term, Year 8 have been looking into the events of the John F Kennedy assassination as part of their Humanities theme ‘Events and Experiences’. Pupils first were introduced to a crime scene and had to work through the clues to identify who our victim was. We then looked at the events of the day that took place and the Warren Commission Report findings. All pupils were fully engaged in this topic as they were eager to investigate in order to develop their own theory on who assassinated JFK after being presented information about the different groups of people in America who may have agreed/disagreed with his policies as well as looking into his relationship with various power groups such as the CIA, FBI, Mafia etc.

Year 9

Year 9 have finished looking at their GCSE Unit USA 1910-1929. Their knowledge and understanding of the topics covered has developed and they now know about key events that effected the American people and have applied that knowledge to their past paper test where we are seeing a clear impact on progress through their results. They have shown great maturity in starting their GCSE course independently and have already displayed all of the requirements needed to be successful at GCSE level; determination, hard working, resilience and a desire to succeed and a thirst for learning! They will move into Year 10 focusing on Unit 1 on Depression, War and Recovery in Britain from 1930-1951.

Year 10

Year 10 have also had a very busy term and have now completed both their Unit 1 and 2 studies and have sat their GCSE examinations on these units this May and June. They have all worked very hard this year and have completed a lot of past papers and undertaken revision for regular class tests on past paper questions. We are confident that they will all reap the rewards in their results this summer with grades they can be very proud of and will repeat this same work ethic as we begin our next Unit of work in Year 11 on Hitler’s Nazi Germany.

Year 11

As a department, we would like to take this opportunity to thank our year 11 GCSE History classes. They have been an absolute joy to teach for the last 5 years. Their love for History and the current world around them is fantastic! Their knowledge about current affairs and the links they are able to make with the past in these situations has led to many great debates in the classroom that we have thoroughly enjoyed being a part of! We wish every one of them every success in their futures as I know you are all going to do great and wonderful things - “Dream big, aim high, continue to work very hard at all times and you are going to go far!”

NHS 76th Year Anniversary

We have also celebrated the 76th Year Anniversary of the NHS during the first week of July. First of all, our Year 7 cohort were given the fantastic opportunity to be taken around Tredegar Town Centre for a carousel of activities such as attending The Tredegar Workmen’s Medical Aid Society Heritage Centre, Tredegar Museum, Bedwellty House and a walk along some of the Aneurin Bevan Trail.

Eleven of our History Ambassadors also took part in a debate competition with pupils from Brynmawr Foundation School to discuss current topics regarding the NHS. A massive well done to all who took part, it was pleasing to see how passionate our History Ambassadors were and how much they valued the NHS.

Expressive Arts

Les Miserables School Production

The Faculty staff have been extremely busy designing, making and painting, set, props and some costumes for our amazing production of Les Miserables. The sell out four night production set in Paris required 14 10ft boards to be painted and included the massive Barricade scene. As well as the personal props such as the doll for Epinone and the ABC Café sign, it was a pleasure to see the stage light up every evening with the outstanding casts performance set against out stage designs. A massive thanks you to all staff for support, we thoroughly enjoy working with Music and Drama to produce such a fantastic school production to be proud of. The support we have had has been amazing and following a week in the theatre we are so proud to receive such amazing reviews and kind messages thank you.

Music and Performing Arts

Wow, what a term it has been for the Expressive Arts department! We have all been busy preparing for our production of Les Miserables! From set design, to prop making and everything in between, staff and pupils worked together to create an outstanding performance each night! We would like to say a massive diolch to every member of staff who helped in some capacity, whether it be behind the scenes, making costumes or at the front of house each night. It goes without saying that we are so hugely proud of our amazingly talented cast who have shown commitment, dedication and enthusiasm in abundance! The amount of hours they have put into rehearsals has been commendable and we are so proud of their exemplary work ethic!

Key Stage 3

Year 7 and 8 have been exploring and developing their musical, dance and acting skills in Expressive Arts through the themes of Culture (Year 7) and Narrative (Year 8). Pupils have been exploring the music associated with different cultures and developed their knowledge and skills surrounding the musical characteristics of specific musical styles. In Year 8 pupils have been exploring how music can assist with storytelling through looking at the role music plays in film music. They have learnt how to perform well known film themes and analysed the musical techniques present in a variety of pieces. In Drama, pupils have been exploring duologues in Shrek and developing their accent and dialect skills. In Year 9 GCSE Music, pupils have been developing their solo and ensemble skills as well as studying the principles of music theory.

Key Stage 4

Year 10 GCSE Music pupils have been working very hard on preparing their solo pieces ready to be recorded in Year 11. We said a sad farewell to our Year 11 GCSE Music and Btec Performing arts and Btec Music pupils in June. They have been an absolute pleasure to teach and we are going to miss them hugely! The department would like to wish them all the luck in the world for their future endeavours.

Peripatetic lessons

Our three peripatetic teachers Mr Purkiss, Mr Sims and Miss Tiley will be returning in the second week of September to resume their teaching. Pupils’ lesson times name will appear on the timetable which can be found outside the music rooms, and also gets posted on our school instagram page; ygtcs_expressive_arts_music. If you are interested in receiving drum, guitar, piano or singing lessons, please come and see Mrs Haigh or Mrs Maddy.

Rights Respecting School

This year has been particularly exciting for us as a school as our Rights Respecting School journey has continued to develop. I am excited to share that in May we were awarded the gold Rights Respecting School Award by Stuart Whiffen, our regional advisor from Unicef UK.The Rights Respecting Schools Award is granted to schools that show commitment to promoting and realising children’s rights and encouraging adults, children and young people to respect the rights of others in school. Gold is the highest accolade given by UNICEF UK and shows a deep and thorough commitment to children’s rights at all levels of school life. The Award recognises achievement in putting the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child at the heart of a school’s planning, policies and practice. A Rights Respecting School is a community where children’s rights are learned, taught, practised, respected, protected and promoted.

To put this achievement into perspective: we are the first secondary school to achieve this accolade, following being the first secondary school to achieve silver. Also, we are the second secondary school in South Wales to have achieved this.

It is important to note that this is not the end of our journey, but the start of the next stage. We will need to be re-accredited in three years, and over that time our focus will be on sharing the work we have done with other schools to support them in embedding children's rights at the heart of everything they do as well as continuing the work we have started in our school.

At all stages of our Rights Respecting journey, pupils have been at the center of its development. An example of this is when Year 9 students worked to create and deliver ‘Rights Respecting Language’ tent cards for each member of staff to use as part of their daily work.

I must extend a special thanks to the School Council members of the past two years who I have worked very closely with, as well as the 2022-2023 and 2023-2024 Pupil Leadership Teams. The Pupil Leadership Team has worked hard every other Tuesday to educate our school community about their rights as part of the Right of the Fortnight initiative and I am excited to continue this work over the course of the next academic year.

Equality and Diversity

During the summer term we have celebrated Pride Month. We have done this through Right of the Fortnight linking to No Discrimination and pupils have entered a Pride competition. Congratulations to Lola Williams in year 7 and Brooke Stephens in year 8 for winning the competition.

There have also been posters up throughout the school showing LGBTQ+ role models across a range of subjects. We have installed two permanent posters celebrating the LGBTQ+ community. Staff also wore rainbow and pronoun badges to support Pride month.

We are thrilled to announce that we have been awarded Educating for Equality’s Allegiance Award. This is in recognition of the progress that we have made in developing an inclusive and equitable school for all. Thank you to all the staff and pupils who have been involved in supporting this important work.

Mrs Ewins met with the chair and deputy chair of governors to share the Anti-Racist Wales Action Plan and explain how we are developing an anti-racist culture within our school.

Finally, we wish to thank our outgoing year 11 for their support in promoting equality and diversity this year. Thank you to Lennon, Ffion, Holly and Catherine for all your hardwork and ideas. Thank you also to Atyia and Olivia who have been RVE ambassadors this year and shared some fabulous ideas.

Skills (literacy)

Wow, what a year it has been for progress, growth and success in literacy at Ysgol Gyfun Tredegar Comprehensive School. I, Mr Llewellyn, must take this opportunity to thank the parents and carers at home for their unwavering support over the course of the year as well as the Literacy Team, Mrs Williams-Griffiths, Mrs Williams and Mrs Pearsall, for all of their hard work over the course of this year and for making me feel so welcome following my appointment to the role of Literacy Coordinator in January.

At the start of the year we made a big change as we moved from myON and Accelerated Reader, as our reading and testing platforms, to Sparx. Sparx has allowed us to be able to monitor our learners’ progress as well and ensure that all of our learners have consistent access to high quality texts that are appropriate for their individual reading ages. To support this initiative, Mrs Williams-Griffiths and I have run Sparx Reader Club every Monday and Wednesday which has given students the opportunity to receive extra support from us after school alongside access to technology. The battle for the top spots on the SRP leaderboard has been fierce and the winners are outlined below:

This year, we once again visited Hay-on-Wye for our third trip to the Hay Festival. I must extend a special mention of thanks and immense gratitude to Mrs Williams-Griffiths for organising this valuable enrichment opportunity for our learners. An excellent day was had by all: we visited authors such Ashley Hickson-Lovence, Anthony Horowitz, Daniel Morden, and Frances Harding to hear speeches delivered about what inspired them to become writers, the content of their books, as well as having the opportunity to visit them afterwards and get copies of their books signed. As a team, we commented on how well the pupils behaved again for the third year in a row; there is nothing more rewarding for us as staff than seeing the festival bookshop open its doors and our learners eagerly running inside to discuss books with their peers. No pressure, Mrs Williams-Griffiths, but I am very much looking forward to our fourth trip to Hay next year! .

For the first time, we have also been involved in the transition activities with year six. The Literacy Team and I were extremely excited by the prospect of being able to get to know Year 6 in their own primary schools to launch our “All About Me” themed literacy transition project. As part of the project, students from Year 7 and 9 returned to their respective primary schools to provide support to the Year 6 learners. The students acted as fantastic role models for Ysgol Gyfun Tredegar and were a credit to our school.

We have also just selected our Literacy Ambassadors for 2024-2025. The strength of the applications made this process very difficult. As a team we are very much looking forward to working with the ambassadors for literacy success. Congratulations to the following students:

Numeracy

Pupils this term have made tremendous progress in their registration activities in Numeracy. Weekly battles on TTRS has allowed everyone to improve on their knowledge of times tables. Lots of pupils have been awarded prizes throughout the year and the last winners for this academic year will be announced before we break up for the summer. Year 8 being led by Mrs Greenway, have triumphed over all and are the champion year group for this academic year. Da iawn, Mrs Greenway. A special mention to Mr Watkin for taking part regularly and gaining top 10 placements.

Mrs Lloyd has been running some very exciting challenges using her new dart board. The competitions have been very successful and we are excited to see what they will become in September. Morgan and Ruqaya were our dart league champions this year, will anyone be able to beat them next year?

Numeracy Ambassadors and some of our MAT pupils have been working on a very exciting opportunity, where they are working on some ‘How to’ videos ready for our new year 7 pupils to use in September. I cannot wait to see the final products of all your hard labour.

This term we have also had the pleasure of working with our Cluster schools for our transition project. We have visited each Primary school for a couple of visits where pupils have had the chance to experience some of the ways we teach Numeracy, including cracking codes to open our treasure chest. A massive thank you for giving us 100% on our visits and we look forward to having you in our classes in September.

To finish off this academic year, I would like to take this opportunity to thank both Mr Vokes and Mrs Lloyd. Mr Vokes has produced our puzzle of the week, every week this year. The puzzles have been challenging for both pupils and staff and created opportunities to deepen our thinking in Numeracy. Mrs Lloyd always goes above and beyond to ensure that all pupils are given individual programmes to meet their individual needs in each intervention session. Thank you so much for your hard work, we all are very grateful.

Enjoy your summer everyone, looking forward to building on the successes of this academic year. Mrs Burczyk

ICT

irstly, the department would like to wish all pupils who have recently completed their GCSE Computer Science and Digital Technology qualifications all the best for the future. It has been a pleasure teaching you over the last 3 years.

Key Stage 3

Year 7

Year 7 pupils have been looking at the theme “CSI” where we have looked at a range of encryption techniques as well as an introduction to the use and key elements of Databases. We have looked at a range of ciphers as well as their relevance to the modern world along with real world application of them. Pupils have created their own databases inclusive of the correct data types and validation techniques as well as querying and creating reports for a given database.

Year 8

Following the theme of “Tomorrows World” year 8 have focussed on a range of skills. We have focussed on the creation of a presentation as well as a formal letter. We have incorporated our CRAFT time into these lessons to ensure we have adequate reflection time to make improvements and produce second drafts based on feedback. We have successfully improved our presentation skills alongside relevant and safe research techniques. We have discussed the need for acknowledgements and understanding of copyright when using media. Due to this we have tailored our searches to ensure we access useful and usable information.

Digital Portfolios

Both year 7 and year 8 have been busy updating and taking ownership of their digital portfolios this term. The aim is for us to continue using them as we progress through the school in order to provide an authentic example of our learning journey. It is hoped that pupils access these in their own time to update sections such as “achievements” or “goals” as well as to tailor the website to better reflect their personality.

Year 9

Our Computer Science pupils have covered a range of topics from Unit 1 alongside practicing our python programming techniques. We have looked at and practiced a range of fundamentals of the language in preparation of our NEA task in year 10. We also had the opportunity to partake in ESDGC week and take some of our learning outside - a very rare experience given the nature of the qualification. Pupils were challenged to answer a range of boolean algebra based questions by drawing their circuits or tables in chalk on the floor. This gave us a chance to work outside and also work in groups with a competitive edge.

Key stage 4

Year 10

Digital Technology

We have been working hard on ensuring our NEA task for unit 2 is being completed to the best of our ability. We have designed our house styles and website layouts as well as creating a range of assets from logos to mascots. We have used a range of software and improved our skills primarily in Adobe Photoshop for this task to date. We will be using Dreamweaver when we return in the Autumn as well as Animate or GameMaker Studio. Please remember that all Digital Technology pupils have access to The full Adobe Creative Cloud suite when signing in with their HWB accounts - It would be fantastic if pupils explored the range of software available during the Summer to maintain familiarity or even work on specific skills that will undoubtedly benefit their NEA.

Anti-Bullying

At Ysgol Gyfun Tredegar Comprehensive School we believe that all pupils have the right to respect and to feel safe. Bullying of any kind is unacceptable at our school. If bullying does occur, all pupils should know how to deal with such incidents and who to tell.

We have a zero-tolerance approach towards any form of bullying. We encourage an open culture where everyone within the school community has responsibility for reporting and recording incidents of bullying. Every reported incident will be taken seriously and appropriate action taken with those involved. Anti-bullying is everyone’s responsibility!

What is bullying?

The ABA (Anti-Bullying Alliance) defines bullying as: “the repetitive, intentional hurting of one person or group by another person or group, where the relationship involves an imbalance of power. Bullying can be physical, verbal or psychological.

It can happen face-to-face or through cyberspace.” Bullying is not relationship conflict or ‘banter’.

What to do if a pupil is being bullied?

TALK TO SOMEONE!

There are Anti-Bullying Ambassadors who have been trained by Kidscape. To find out who our ambassadors are, please check our school TV screens, anti-bullying notice board and form class posters. Further information on the role of the ambassadors can be found on the school website. Year 7 and 8 form classes have anti-bullying ambassadors with them during registration time every Wednesday accompanied by members of the Pupil Leadership Team.

Pupils can communicate with any of the ambassadors who will inform the relevant members of staff. Pupils and parents are reminded to report any incidents to the relevant Learning Coordinator. Incidents will be recorded and investigated as per school policy.

Designated Safeguard Leads will be involved if matters persist.

A copy of the Anti-Bullying policy can be found on the school website. Mr P Maddy is the link governor for Anti-Bullying.

There is a dedicated section on our school website for further information.

Interactive anti-bullying information tool for parents and carers

https://www.anti-bullyingalliance.org.uk/tools-information/advice-parents/interactive-anti-bullying-information-tool-parents-and-carers

This is a free interactive anti-bullying information tool for parents and carers. There has been some amazing feedback, with over 85% of parents finding the information they were looking for. It aims to give you information about bullying in an interactive way.

Anti-Bullying Gold Award

We are thrilled to announce that our school has achieved the prestigious Gold Anti-Bullying Quality Mark, making us the first school in the UK to receive this honor! This remarkable achievement reflects our unwavering commitment to creating a safe and inclusive environment for all our students.

This accomplishment would not have been possible without the dedication and hard work of our incredible staff. Your involvement today was crucial in us achieving this award.

I would also like to extend my heartfelt thanks to our pupils, who have shown exceptional commitment by talking about our positive and respectful school culture. Their involvement in our anti-bullying initiatives has been truly inspiring and instrumental in achieving this recognition.

Here are the comments from the accreditor:

he Anti-Bullying Quality Mark is a national scheme which endorses how good schools are at preventing bullying. It challenges them to establish effective, sustainable anti-bullying policies and strategies.

Ysgol Gyfun Tredegar Comprehensive School is the first school in Wales to achieve the ABQM-UK Gold Award because staff, students, families and Governors demonstrated that anti-bullying has had a significant impact on the community.

The pupils and staff have worked really hard to build a safe and supportive environment for sharing their feelings, experiences and concerns. This means that pupils are far less likely to get involved in bullying behaviour. They have also built a culture of respect and understanding which means that trusting friendships and adult-pupil relationships can thrive.

We would like to congratulate Mr King and his colleagues for their resilience and dedication to securing this really impressive achievement for the Tredegar community, as well as the governors, pupils and parents/carers for their commitment to anti-bullying. We hope that the Gold Award recognises their efforts and inspires them to continue to strengthen their anti-bullying policy and practice for the benefit of the local community.

Please feel free to edit this text to suit different purposes and readers.

I look forward to continuing to work with you and your colleagues in the next school year.

ASD Base

Our third term at Tredegar Base is complete, drawing to an end a great first year. Through hard work and perseverance the learners now have an inclusive timetable which we will continue to grow as we go into year 8.

The learners did themselves proud in their accomplishments in sports day and showed determination to perform well.

The learners had the opportunity to attend the history day and really enjoyed the local experiences.

We have explored Bedwellty park and had a meeting with the manager to discuss the new park that is going to be installed.

We was very fortunate to have the opportunity to visit Ebbw Fawr LRB to meet the learners there and form new friendships. The social experience and nature walk was great fun.

Next term we will continue to update our garden and our new learners have already started to plan their ideas.

Transition visits have been taking place as we prepare to welcome new learners in September, our current learners have shown their new peers around the base and supported them into the main school for lessons.

Enjoy the holidays and see you refreshed in September.

Mr Rees

More Able and Talented

At Ysgol Gyfun Tredegar Comprehensive School we are committed to ensuring our pupils meet their full potential. We aim to ensure that pupils who have been identified as More Able and Talented in subjects or any other area are provided with an enriched and broad curriculum to foster this potential. We also appreciate that some pupils will be exceptionally able and talented and these pupils have been identified as our ‘Most Able’ pupils and placed onto our whole school ‘Most Able’ register.

We have a policy and a range of activities to meet the needs of all pupils identified as More Able and Talented and a number of enrichment opportunities. Below are some of the enrichment opportunities that our MAT pupils have been involved with this term:

Year 7

As part of the school’s provision for MAT pupils in years 7, we took our identified MAT pupils on an educational visit to the Senedd. Our pupils visited Siambr Hywel, the Senedd’s dedicated youth debating chamber, to learn about the role of a Member of the Senedd, and what happens inside the Senedd. Our learners also debated in the chamber using the new technology voting pods as to whether or not the school holidays should be changed in Wales, to which they voted, no! The visit helped our learners to better understand how democracy works in Wales, and how to have their say through the Welsh Parliament. Hopefully it may even inspire some of them to a future in politics, especially after listening to our AM, Alun Davies who joined us in the Chamber, answered pupil’s questions and certainly instilled a great sense of pride in them for being YGTCS pupils with a great deal to offer Wales and the World just as he has!

Year 8

As part of the school’s provision for MAT pupils, our year 8 MAT pupils participated in an educational visit to the House of Parliament, London on 11th June. The visit involved an awe-inspiring tour of the palace of Westminster which introduced the concepts of democracy and representation. As the Palace is the working home of the UK Parliament, we visited: the House of Commons, the House of Lords, a visit to the Public Gallery to observe MPs, and Westminster Hall. After the tour, our pupils participated in a workshop on the passing of laws and legislation and debated whether or not a new law should be passed that would give all children access to free transport until the age of 18.

We were also very fortunate to go on the London Eye which meant we had we had an excellent view of the many famous landmarks and sights in London!

Year 9

All 14 pupils in year 9 identified as Most Able were selected onto the Brilliant Club Scholars programme. The Scholars programme is an opportunity for all 14 selected pupils to develop the knowledge, skills and ambition needed to progress to higher education. Their graduation was held at Bath University.

The visit consisted of:

A campus tour

A study skills session

The chance to meet and ask questions of current University students.

An information, advice and guidance session from the University.

The Brilliant Club Scholars Programme

All 14 pupils in year 9 who have been identified as Most Able were selected onto the Brilliant Club Scholars programme. The Scholars programme is an opportunity for all 14 selected pupils to develop the knowledge, skills and ambition needed to progress to higher education.

Pupils have spent the Summer Term attending weekly academic tutorials with their PHD Tutor, Daniel Chesse where they developed their communication, research and debating skills. The course, intriguingly titled "Terror, Secrets, and Lies: Understanding Terrorism," delved into the complex and often troubling world of terrorism. Our pupils were challenged to explore the motives behind various terrorist organizations and grapple with the theories and terminology associated with counterinsurgency tactics, special operations, decapitation, targeted killing, and state terror. They began their studies by examining the root causes of terrorism and specific acts, from the IRA and the Troubles in Ireland to the War on Terror with Al Qaeda. Through rigorous debate and critical reflection, they questioned assumptions and processes at the heart of terrorism and the fight against it, ultimately proposing their own solutions and ideas to tackle these pressing issues.

The culmination of their hard work was a 2000-word essay titled "Terrorism is a Simple Matter to Resolve." This challenging assignment required deep analysis, critical thinking, and a high level of academic writing. I am delighted to share that all 14 pupils passed their final assignments—a feat that speaks volumes about their dedication and intellectual capabilities.

The results are below:

We would like to congratulate all of our pupils on these excellent results, which are testament to the hard work, effort and great resilience that they showed throughout the Scholars programme. We are very much looking forward to seeing what bright future lies ahead for these pupils when they are already performing at such a high standard when they are only in Year 9! Well done all!

Year 10

This summer term, our Year 10 pupils have enjoyed numerous opportunities designed to raise their aspirations and inspire their future pathways beyond school. They attended an enlightening talk from Exeter University, where they learned about university life and what the life of an University student entails.

Additionally, they also visited the University of South Wales, where they enjoyed a Campus tour, lunch in the local student canteen and participated in several informative workshops. These sessions covered various aspects of university life, including what lectures and tutorials are, living accommodations, course options, finances, scholarships, and apprenticeships. Both events were highly successful in broadening our pupils' horizons and raising their aspirations for the future.

NACE Re-Accreditation Award

The National Association for More Able Children in Education (NACE) has reaccredited our school with the NACE Challenge Award. This is our second accreditation. The award is given in recognition of school-wide commitment to high-quality provision for more able learners, within the context of challenge for all.

The award is based on the NACE Challenge Framework, which sets out criteria for high-quality provision for more able learners within a wider ethos of challenge for all. The framework is available as part of the NACE Challenge Development Programme – a suite of resources developed by NACE to help schools evaluate and improve their provision for more able learners.

To attain the Challenge Award, schools must complete a detailed self-evaluation using the NACE Challenge Framework, submit a portfolio of supporting evidence, and undertake assessment by a NACE associate. The assessment process includes examination of school data and key documents; lesson observations; and interviews with school leaders, learners, parents and governors.

The Nace Assessor, Jon Murphy said in his report:

“It was a pleasure to be involved in the assessment of your wonderful school again. I came away inspired by the wonderful opportunities you provide for your pupils. A highlight of course was Les Misérables! I could easily run out of superlatives in describing what I feel. It was truly outstanding and a wonderful reflection of exceptionally talented pupils and staff.”

He thoroughly enjoyed listening to pupils and staff talking so passionately and positively about how well our learners achieve and how they are supported to ensure they are stretched and challenged to achieve their full potential. He wrote in his report:

“Pupils demonstrated a great deal of pride in their school during interviews for the Challenge Award assessment and were boundlessly enthusiastic about the opportunities the school provides for them. One pupil said, “Teachers are very mindful of us as individuals and know our needs. The skills we have gained and the way we have grown is down to the teachers”. Also talking about the teachers, another stated, “Quite simply, they care”.

He ended his report with these words that made us feel very proud indeed:

“Tredegar Comprehensive school is immersed in a culture of high expectations. Leaders and staff have nurtured a climate of high ambition and aspiration for the pupils in their care and encourage each individual to hold high aspirations for themselves.”

Year 7

WOW! Has a whole year passed already? I am really proud of Year 7 as they embrace many opportunities and always strive to achieve their best. I hope this continues for the next 4 years.

37 MAT pupils had the opportunity to visit the Senedd in Cardiff in June, this was an opportunity for them to visit the Senedd and understand how Wales is run and to also hold a debate. The pupils were lucky enough to meet and question Alan Davies AM for Blaenau Gwent. All pupils thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

Year 7 pupils also took part in active steps, the purpose of this was to encourage the pupils of Year 7 to be more active and walk some or part of their journey to school. All pupils that took part were entered into a draw with a chance of winning a £10 love to shop voucher. Well done to all the pupils that took part, the following pupils from each form won a voucher 7T Ioan , 7P Phoebe , 7R Kyle , 7I Macauley , 7D Olivia and 7E Taylor-Jay.

Some Year 7 students have been actively involved in the production of Les Misérables, I have been lucky enough to witness some of the rehearsals and I know the Expressive arts department are extremely proud of all their hard work and commitment they have shown to the show.

155 pupils in Year 7 now hold a Bronze PRIDE points badge, 60 pupils hold a silver badge, 16 pupils hold a Gold badge and 13 pupils hold a platinum badge. This is a great achievement and shows the hard work and dedication of the pupils. Well done all.

7 pupils have 100% attendance for the Year and these pupils are 7P –Lyla H. 7R –Alfie H and Hayden L. 7I – Harley C and Amelia G E. 7D –Olivia and Tyler W This is a brilliant achievement and they should be commended for their commitment to learning.

With the summer holidays fast approaching, we still have a busy term ahead. The pupils will enjoy a reward trip on the 17th July to thank them for all their effort this year.

Mrs Green

With the summer holidays fast approaching, we still have a busy term ahead. The pupils will enjoy a reward trip on the 16th July to thank them for all their effort this year.

Year 8

I cannot believe we have now reached the end of year 8, and our learners are ready to embark on the challenges of year 9.

Attendance

In a close battle, 8E currently sit at the top of the Yr. 8 Form attendance league with the remaining forms in close pursuit, especially 8I who are only 1% behind. .

Despite their form not winning the attendance league, it is important to mention that there are many pupils who have an impressive individual attendance.

Impressively, there are 5 Year 8 pupils currently on 100% attendance.

Year 9

In a very keenly contested battle, 9T currently sit at the top of the Yr. 9 Form attendance league with the remaining forms in close pursuit. Collective form attendance is analysed weekly, with there being a prize awarded for the form who sit at the top of the Year 9 Form Attendance League at the end of the academic year.

Despite their form not winning the attendance league, it is important to mention that there are many pupils who have an impressive individual attendance. This will also be rewarded at the end of the year.

Six Year 9 pupils are currently on 100% attendance for the academic year. At the time of writing, Corey draper, Harrison Hughes, Zachary Hughes, CJ Lewis, Jake Pearce and Noah Pearsall have only a few more day to complete a full year of attending school. Da iawn.

Congratulations to Tomos Bridgeman-Quinton and Ellie-Mae Moses who were successful in winning the Spring Term 2 attendance draw. Pupils were entered into the draw based on improvements made between their attendance at Christmas and then at the end of Spring term 2.

Maintaining good attendance is vital for all pupils in order to maximise the opportunity to learn and develop in order to fulfil potential to reach set goals

Pride points

There are now 117 pupils in the year group who have collected 350 Pride points and achieved Bronze status. Well done all!

15 pupils in the year group have attained their Silver status on receiving 700 pride points throughout the academic year.

Noah has been awarded Gold status (900 Pride points).

There are 3 pupils in the year group who have excelled in attaining Platinum status for acquiring more than 1000 pride points since September 2023. Huge congratulations to Harrison , CJ and Lili .

Brilliant Club

As part of the scholars programme, 14 Year 9 pupils recently attended a ‘Brilliant club’ graduation ceremony at the University of Bath. Having spent time with their PhD tutor in a series of university style tutorials, pupils were able to share their subject knowledge and passion for learning in developing the knowledge skills and confidence that will help them on their future education journey. The school were extremely proud to receive some outstanding feedback about our learners. A huge congratulation to you all. Further information can be found in the MAT section of the newsletter.

Year 10 Approaches

With Year 10 fast approaching it is important to point out that throughout the next academic year pupils will sit examinations that will contribute to their final GCSE or relevant examination results. Details of such exams will be shared with parents/carers in the new academic year. It is vital that pupils attend school consistently throughout Year 10 and return after the summer break with a mature, motivated and resilient attitude to meet the academic demands and challenges they will face.

Year 10

Year 10 have continued to work hard, show resilience and apply themselves diligently. So many of the year group have approached their first year of GCSE examinations with maturity and positivity and so many have continued to embrace the wide range of enrichment opportunities we endeavour to provide here at YGTCS. I am excited to watch the year group continue to grow as young people and continue to succeed and flourish in Year 11.

Attendance

Maintaining good attendance helps enable pupils to achieve and become the very best version of themselves that they can be. Attendance has been a central focus of ours throughout the year and each week we have reflected upon and celebrated attendance. School attendance and learner success go hand-in-hand and pupils with attendance over 93% are most likely to get good results and achieve their full potential. This will be of paramount importance next year as the year group sit more GCSE examinations and complete their final year of compulsory education. Pupils who have achieved an outstanding 100% attendance this academic year are Ianis Constantin and Fletcher Jones. This is an exceptional achievement and one we proudly celebrate. Well done to both of you!

Pride Point Badge Awardees

At the time of writing, 50 pupils from the year group have been awarded their Bronze badge for achieving over 350 Pride Points.

2 pupils from the year group have been awarded their Silver badge for achieving over 700 Pride Points. These are Ianis C and William K.

Huge congratulations to you all; keep up the excellent work, Year 10 role models!

Pupil Leadership Team

Huge congratulations are in order for our recently appointed Pupil Leadership Team.

Prefects: Rosie L, Libby P, William K, Oliver C, Evan R, Evan W, Rhiannon W, Tilleigh E, Izzac T, Caelan L, Millie C, Connor S, Ryan S, Imogen D

I wish you all every success in these prestigious roles next year and know you will do the roles complete justice and the school, the year group and yourselves proud.

Enrichment

Recently, the entire year group experienced a taster day at the Blaenau Gwent Learning Zone. The day allowed all pupils the opportunity to explore vocational and A level pathways and the year group thoroughly enjoyed browsing the course exhibits. It certainly gave many food for thought and the day was very effective in imparting knowledge of routes and pathways beyond leaving school. The pupils were an absolute credit to our school and it was great to see so many engaging in mature discussions regarding their futures.

77 pupils from the year group recently visited the University of South Wales (Treforest campus). This enrichment experience exposed our pupils to higher education opportunities and what university life could look like. The experience was extremely valuable for those already considering higher education and for those who perhaps are still unsure or were not aware of higher education opportunities available that suited them.

May I take this opportunity to wish all of our pupils and their families a wonderful and restful summer break. Miss G Carson

Year 11

Year 11, I feel honoured and privileged to have worked with such a wonderful year group, even though it was only from October 2022. I have been lucky enough to have shared some wonderful memories with this cohort and those will stay with me. I will always remember the trips, conversations, the banter and laughs. The simple things like visiting Coleg Gwent and being told that your year group were the most respectful and mature from all the schools in Blaenau Gwent. Also, who can forget so many of you performing in the Xmas factor 2023!

The progress made by you as a year group since Year 7 has been immense and I feel great pride that I have hopefully contributed to this progress in a small way. Throughout you have shown that you are resilient, determined and driven individuals to get where you all are today! This is testament to you as individuals, the support you have had from your parents, carers, family, friends, the school and your wider support systems.

I would like to commend the pupils for their efforts, behaviour and attitude in the run up to and during the exams, they were a credit to the school and I am confident all of their hard work will pay off.

The Prom at Bryn Meadows golf club was an amazing event and it was lovely to see the pupils’ personalities shine through in their choice of styles and colours they wore. They were a credit to the school and themselves and certainly danced the night away. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our Vice Chair of Governors Cath Hares for all of her help and advice with the decorations and table centres, they were fabulous!

From the bottom of my heart, thank you for all the memories and for being people I have loved getting to know. Whatever you choose to do in your lives, I wish you success and most importantly of all, happiness.

Lots of Love,

Miss Williams

I will see you all on Thursday 22nd August 2024 to celebrate your exam successes!

Year 11 remember that famous Muhammad Ali quote ‘Don’t count the days, make the days count!’

I remain very proud of this year group and believe they are excellent role models for the younger pupils in the school. I look forward to your continued support over the coming weeks. My challenge to you Year 11 is to get the best results ever at YGTCS. I believe in you, give it your best shot!

REWARDS

For those pupils who regularly attend school we believe it is important to recognise and reward those pupils for their efforts. As well as collecting Pride Points for attending school, there have been lots of other incentives and rewards for pupils to enjoy…just for regularly attending school!

Our whole school attendance league means that pupils have to work collectively as a form class to ensure that they meet the target of 93% to make it to the premier league. Every form class has been striving with their form tutors and Learning Coordinators to ensure that form classes make the premier or championship leagues as no one wants the shame of being in leagues 1 or 2!

Every week the form class who has made the most improvement is rewarded and every fortnight the best attending form class in each year group are also rewarded for their efforts. Raffle tickets are distributed weekly by form tutors to enter into a prize draw. This term prizes have included an Echo Show, Primark Vouchers and earbuds. There has been some fierce competition between the form classes across the school however 7P finish the academic year in first place in the Premier League. Well done to Team 7P!!!

Punctuality

It is also very important to attend school every day and on time. Pupils are expected to be with their form tutors at 8.30am every day. Pupils arriving after morning registration must sign in at Pupil Services and enter the school building via the quad entrance.

Sanctions will be put in place for pupils arriving late to school more than twice a week. Frequent late marks for pupils could also result in a fixed penalty notice for parents / carers from the Education Welfare Service.

10 minutes lost each morning and your child will miss 50 minutes of school each week or a full day each half term.

How Parents and Carers can help

ü Contact the school before 8.30am each morning of your child’s absence.

ü Make every effort to arrange medical appointments outside of school hours.

ü If your child’s medical appointment falls during the school day, please notify the school of your child’s collection time. Make every effort to ensure your child attends school prior to and after their appointment where feasible.

ü Support the school in ensuring that your child arrives promptly at school each morning.

ü Contact the school to discuss any problems or emerging issues with your child.

ü Praise and reward your child’s achievements at school.
