A reminder for all motorists in our local area

School zone rules are in place to protect our children

In New South Wales (NSW), school zones are in place to protect children during school travel times, with a 40km/h speed limit active during specific hours.

The 40km/h speed limit is active in our shared BBHS and St Finbarr's school zone from 8 am to 9:30 am and 2:30 pm to 4 pm, and consists of the sign posted section of Bangalow Road and all of Arakwal Court.

The reduced speed limit in our school zone helps to protect children on their way to and from school. It also reduces the risk and potential severity in the event of an accident.

We have been witnessing some very dangerous driving behaviour and illegal parking by parents and carers using our school zone. Motorists who don’t obey the rules face heavy fines and demerits.

Please think about the safety of the students first when driving and parking in our school zone, and adhere to the following:

  • Drive under the 40km/h speed limit in school zones as these are the busiest times and places.
  • Give way to buses pulling out – watch for bus flashing lights.
  • Always park in the designated parking spaces and turn legally. Avoid dangerous manoeuvres like U-turns over double white lines and also three-point turns.
  • Always give way to pedestrians and bike riders on the designated crossing, especially when entering and leaving Arakwal Court.
  • Drop off and pick up students on the school side of the road in our school's designated drop-off and pick-up area. Never call out to children to cross the road.
  • Make sure students get out of the car on the kerb side of the road to be away from passing traffic.
"Speeding, even just a couple of kilometres over the limit, could be the difference between being able to stop in time or not at all, and in a school zone, this could mean hurting a child".

We thank you for your support.

Let’s build Byron Bay High School a COLA!

Can you help us build this essential structure for our students?

An artist's impression of what the COLA will look like at BBHS
Did you know that making a voluntary donation to a school's building fund is tax deductible? The ATO allows you to claim deductions for donations to a school building fund for your child's school.

As the financial year ends, we’re asking our school community to help us fund a Covered Outdoor Learning Area (COLA) over the basketball courts.

Why a COLA?

  • Year-round UV protection for our students
  • All-weather outdoor exercise space
  • Flexible area for learning and school events
  • Keeps students active all year round, no matter the weather

The BBHS P&C has long pushed for this upgrade, but in 2024, the NSW Department of Education rejected the project, citing existing covered areas as being sufficient. After Tropical Cyclone Alfred hit our area, Education Minister Prue Car made a visit to BBHS and witnessed firsthand the dire need for facility upgrades. Yet the current Department update on the COLA project is that it is "under consideration" for 2025–2026 funding.

We can't afford to wait years for this! Our students need it now. To show our commitment, we want to raise the funds and get the ball rolling.

Be part of the legacy that will provide invaluable space for our teenage community.

Let’s act now! Every donation - big or small – will bring us closer to a space where our students can learn, play, and thrive in all weather conditions.

You can make a tax free donation to the Byron Bay High School Building Fund here:

If you have any questions, please contact the P&C Association at bbhspandc@gmail.com

‘Can You Relate?’... Year 10 Drama performs for primary schools

Supporting Positive Outcomes Through Theatre (S.P.O.T.T)

'Can you relate?' - cast and crew

Last Friday, as part of their S.P.O.T.T. project work, our dedicated and talented Year 10 Drama class staged their first live performance of their original play ‘Can You Relate?’ for an audience of Stage 3 students from Bangalow, The Pocket and Goonengerry Public Schools.

The staff and students from these visiting schools were thrilled with the show, and the Year 10s conducted a thought-provoking Q&A with the students and their teachers afterwards.
Cast and crew in action

The Year 5 and 6 audience overwhelmingly agreed that the play was deeply relevant for them and felt a strong connection to the characters, situations and feelings the play evoked. The feedback from those schools who came has been heartwarmingly positive.

The content creation of ‘Can You Relate?’ occurred over 3 months of hard work in our Year 10 Drama class. It began with a range of research, investigative and critical processes, moving into creative improvisation and devising processes, and then into rehearsal and performance.

This years’ topic garnered from Stage 3 students and their teachers was ‘human connections’ or 'relationships', which became the driving motor for our work. Four stories are woven into the play, each dealing with a different relationship sphere and ways of navigating the concerns that may arise for children within those spheres. Parental conflict, online connections, school friendships and first crushes are all portrayed with relatable characters, complex issues and real life solutions.

The play’s content was inspired and informed by not only wide research but the surveyed voices and perspectives of our Stage 3 audience themselves, and from Year 7 students who assisted in the investigation phase of the project.

Our 2nd showing was yesterday, Thursday 19 June, for Byron Bay and Coorabell Public Schools, and the Byron Community Primary School.

A public showing of this production will also be held on Tuesday 24 June, from 6-7pm. Seating will be limited to 80.

Congratulations to our Year 10 Drama students! I am so over the moon for you, and so deeply impressed with your dedication, talent and maturity in putting this together. What a fantastic show!

SRC news

Bringing music and companionship to our aged community

Recently, members of our Student Representative Council (SRC) travelled to the St Andrew's George’s Cottages aged care facility on Marvell Street, with musical instruments in tow and hung out with the residents. They made us feel very welcome, offering us cups of tea and coffee, and for a while we connected over common interests, and many interesting conversations could be heard between the old and young.

Afterwards there was a variety of performances including guitars, piano and our voices.

Despite the different genres, in every performance you could see the residents' faces light up and it was evident everyone in the room was having a great time. The day ended in a singalong of You Are My Sunshine, and led by Eva W-S singing and on guitar, and a choir of voices of all ages could be heard singing along.

Both parties went their separate ways transformed and with smiles on their faces. The day was a fulfilling experience for all of us, and we would love to return as soon as possible.

Perfect Presence

Celebrating our connection with the Byron Youth Service

Over the past 2 terms, Karim and Sarah from the Byron Youth Service (BYS) have been hosting weekly Perfect Presence sessions at BBHS, working collaboratively with a group of amazing Year 9 and Year 10 girls.

The program aims to support students so that they feel stronger connections to their school and learning, and are supported to build on personal and social capabilities.

At BBHS the Perfect Presence Program focusses on:

  • facilitating ongoing improvements to student attendance rates
  • building positive relationships with others; and
  • gaining a greater sense of belonging to their school, culture and community.

This week, with the program drawing to an end, the Byron Youth Service and Byron Bay High School invited parents and family to attend a celebration in our newly renovated Wellbeing Room. The room's facelift was very generously facilitated by the Byron Youth Service.

A BIG thank you to Karim and Sarah for giving our Wellbeing Meeting Room a much needed facelift!

The girls have been participating in the program for 2 terms and have really grown and developed over that time. The celebration was an important part of the process, allowing us to really acknowledge the work they have done and celebrate the great young people they are and are becoming.

Congratulations to all the girls for their dedication and commitment to the program.

Art Access Program

Bringing creativity and connection to our school

Over the past 10 weeks, a group of Year 9 students participated in the Art Access program, an arts-based initiative designed to build confidence, skills, and a stronger sense of community.

The group remained engaged throughout the program, developing their creative abilities while exploring personal strengths and setting positive goals.

Through weekly workshops, the students built supportive peer connections and contributed to a meaningful outcome: a vibrant new mural now brightening the school’s Lighthouse Learning Centre!

This project reflects their artistic talents and helps foster a sense of belonging within our school community. Funded by the Commonwealth Government and the Byron Youth Service, Art Access has provided valuable opportunities for these students to overcome barriers to success and celebrate their contribution to our school.

Far North Coast Athletics Championships

BBHS students deliver some outstanding results!

In chilly conditions on Tuesday, our talented athletes proudly represented BBHS at the Far North Coast Athletics Championships held at Cudgen. The team delivered some outstanding results across a range of events, including jumps, throws, and track races.

What stood out most was the way our students supported and encouraged one another through every success and setback, creating a positive team spirit. It was a pleasure to accompany this group of young athletes.

Well done to all our students who competed on the day! Congratulations to the following students who have now qualified for the upcoming North Coast Athletics Championships, to be held on Thursday 31 July at Cudgen. Actioning excursions and school events emails in a timely manner

To avoid your child being disappointed and missing out on school activities, please keep an eye on the 'due date' for your online consent and payments.

All online consents and payments for excursions and school events need to be finalised by their due date. The due date is typically 2 days before an event takes place, but some larger excursions and camps may close earlier to allow our staff time to confirm numbers with external companies.

Due to the logistics of organising buses, staffing, medical requirements and rolls, unfortunately late consent and payments cannot be accepted.

To enable your child to participate and not miss out please check your email inbox DAILY for emails from noreply@mail.schoolbytes.education.

We thank you for working with us as we strive to organise quality and exciting educational opportunities for our students.
