Students in KM excitedly engage in guided reading groups on a daily basis. We are fortunate enough to have parent helpers every day to support us with our learning. Students are involved in a variety of activities including games that reinforce high frequency words, phoneme revision and phonemic awareness activities, as well as explicit reading instruction with the teacher. Mrs McQuhae is so proud of the effort students place in their learning and the progress they have already made. Keep up the sensational effort, KM!

Fun Friday is a fun afternoon for Kindergarten students to do activities that help them learn to get along with others and understand their feelings. Students take part in different exploring and craft activities that encourage teamwork and problem-solving. They work together on projects like building with blocks or making art with different materials. While they do these activities, they learn to share, take turns and help each other, which is important for making friends and understanding how others feel. Through playing and exploring, students not only get better at using their hands but also make new friends. They learn to appreciate the different ideas and feelings of their peers in a fun and enjoyable setting.

Creative Arts in KS

Kindergarten students have been expressing their artistic side in both Music and Visual Art lessons this term. In Music, students have been learning about rhythm. Miss Owen has been teaching students to explore different rhythmic patterns using percussion instruments. In Visual Art lessons, students have been practising techniques such as line, symmetry and colour to create bright butterflies.

Digital Devices

As we strive to create a focused and engaging learning environment, we’d like to remind families of our school procedures regarding digital devices. In alignment with the NSW Department of Education policy, mobile phones and smartwatches are not permitted during school hours, however we understand that these devices may be important for after-school activities, and we are happy to keep them safe in the office until the school day is over. Together, we can help our students stay focused on their learning!

Assistant Principal Curriculum and Instruction Network Day

Our school recently hosted the Assistant Principal Curriculum and Instruction (APC&I) Network Day! It was a fantastic opportunity for professional learning, with many APC&Is in attendance. A special thank you to our very own APC&I, Ashley Perusco, for coordinating such a successful event. The insights and ideas exchanged during the day will undoubtedly contribute to enriching our educational practices and ultimately benefit our students.

National Sorry Day Assembly

As we celebrate National Reconciliation Week, this year's theme, "Bridging Now to Next," invites us all to reflect on how far we have come and to take bold, meaningful steps toward a more equitable and respectful future. Last week, our school held a Sorry Day and Reconciliation Assembly designed and facilitated by our Aboriginal students. Thank you to all those community members who attended and provided such positive feedback. In addition to the learning during the assembly, students will undertake Reconciliation Week activities with their class teacher, further enriching their understanding and appreciation of our shared history.

On Wednesday 21 May, Year 6 had the opportunity to listen to Annie O'Rourke speak about the importance and significance of National Sorry Day and Reconciliation Week. Her knowledge that she shared was invaluable and given from first hand experience as being a former assistant to Kevin Rudd, who gave the apology to the stolen generation. Thank you to Annie for taking the time to visit our school.

Our next P&C meeting will be held at Byron Bay Public School in the staffroom on Thursday 12 June at 5:30pm. All Welcome!

Our girls' netball team recently participated in a Gala Day in Mullumbimby, showcasing their dedication and sportsmanship. In their first match against Bangalow Public School, they played a competitive game, ending with a score of 10 – 7. They then engaged in a non-competitive game against Brunswick Heads Public School, allowing all players to gain valuable experience. Throughout the day, the girls demonstrated excellent skills and represented their school with pride. Their behaviour was exemplary, reflecting the values we uphold. A heartfelt thank you to the parents who attended, cheered on the students, and assisted with scoring and timekeeping.

PSSA Basketball Knockout Competition

Round 2 Byron Bay Public School v Teven Tintenbar Public School - Byron had a convincing 30 – 8 win in their first basketball game together. The boys did a great job using each other's strengths and finding their roles within the team. They played hard, supported one another and showed great teamwork throughout the game.

Round 3 - Byron Bay Public School v Mullumbimby Public School - Their second game proved challenging right from the start. A tied score at the end of the fourth quarter pushed the team into a tense 3-minute overtime. Throughout the game, the boys gave it their all, playing with passion and determination. Their defense continued to improve as they gelled more as a team. After a hard-fought battle, they came out on top with a well-earned 33 – 30 victory. Congratulations, boys! A special thank you to our supportive parents for cheering us on and helping out with the bench - your support means a lot!

Our school was well represented with six teams competing across different age groups: two under 10 sides, two under 12 sides, and two girls' league tag teams.
