Dear Rocky,
I've liked this guy off and on for two years, the problem is he's in eighth and I'm in seventh. I feel like I have no chance with him because he'll think it's weird that he's older. I really really like him and I have him in one of my classes.I want him to know that I like him even if he rejects me, how do I tell him?
-Anonymous
Dear Anonymous,
Age gaps in middle school may seem drastic and weird, but in reality it’s nothing to worry about! Especially if you have a genuine liking for this person to the point where you’re too scared to tell them. I think the best thing you can do is get to know him better. If you don’t talk to him, then you’ll never really know him well enough to like him, but if you make an effort to talk to him and know his interest, you’ll get a much better feeling if you like him and if he likes you. When the feelings are right, then you should tell him.
-Rocky
Dear Rocky,
I have a friend who always makes me feel like I'm not good enough to hang out with her. I want to stop having this toxic relationship with her and just forget I was her friend, please help .
-Anonymous
Dear Anonymous,
I’m so sorry! I understand this whole-heartedly, and know how hard it can be when friends treat you like dirt. Toxic friendships are never easy, and if this friend isn’t helping to fix the problem it’s a bit like pouring salt on a wound. As for distancing yourself from her, I would recommend just keeping her at arms length for a little while, so just try to avoid conversations with her, and do your best not to be too cold or rude. She might get the wrong idea from that and continue to bug you about it. Just try your best not to let her get into your head, and surround yourself with people who laugh with you and appreciate your presence.
-Rocky
Dear Rocky,
Hi, I'm having trouble with friends. I can make friends easy when I'm not at school but when I am, I stay with the friends I already have. I like the friends I have, but I would like a bit more. I'm kinda growing apart from one of my best friends, we don't really talk anymore and they are really only hanging out with people that don't like me. I don't know what to do, please help!
-Anonymous
Dear Anonymous,
Middle school friendships can be tough, and so can balancing school with your life outside of it, especially when it comes to friendships. It sounds like you’re a really outgoing person if you make friends easily outside of school, which is amazing! If you’re having trouble with the friends you already have, have you ever considered widening your circle? I know it can be daunting to leave your comfort zone, and isn’t anything to laugh about. But if and when you’re ready, try introducing yourself to people at school and stretching your friend group. Jumping around groups and keeping a foot in each one is totally okay!

Recipe
Mango Sticky Rice
Allison Alder, Paisley Douthwaite, & Olive Martinson
Mango Sticky Rice is the perfect mix between sweet and salty! It’s also vegan and gluten-free. Follow this recipe to make 4 servings!
Ingredients
- 1 cup uncooked sticky rice or glutinous rice (rinsed and soaked overnight)
- 1 can full fat coconut milk
- 1/3 cup + 1 Tbsp pure organic cane sugar
- 1/2 tsp sea salt
- 1 tsp cornstarch
- 2 Tbsp water
- 2-3 ripe mangoes, peeled and sliced thinly
Directions
You’ll need to soak white rice for at least 8 hours. After it’s done soaking, drain it in the sink, then add the rice to a steamer pot. Steam for 20-25 minutes or until rice is translucent.
For the coconut sauce, add coconut milk, sugar, and salt to a pot, and stir until it begins to boil, then take ¾ cup of the coconut sauce and set it to the side.
Next, mix the cornstarch and water, then add it to the coconut sauce in the pot and simmer until the sauce thickens (2-3 minutes).
Put the rice in a bowl and then pour on the ¾ cup of coconut sauce from earlier. Mix until the rice is evenly coated. Then you will need to put a towel over the bowl and wait 15 minutes for the rice to absorb the coconut sauce.
If you have the time and ingredients, you can also make a garnish (this is completely optional.) Combine crushed peanuts, sesame seeds, sugar, and salt in a small bowl.
Next, divide the mango slices and rice between four plates, and drizzle coconut sauce on top. Sprinkle some of the garnish on top, if you want. Enjoy!

A Look At The Menu

- Ice Cream
- Dirty Red Bull or Lotus
- Fountain Soda
- A Laundry List Long of Toppings - Cereal, Frozen Fruit, Drizzles and Toppers, & Candy

Brooklyn’s Choice
I got a Honey Blueberry Macaroon. It came individually and was about $2.15. They switch up the macarons quite frequently, so there are many options! I give the macaroon an 8/10. It was very tasty, but macarons are always a bit pricey. Here, you can also get a pack of 6 for about $15. Overall, I say these are a great option at the sweet spot!
Ashley's Choice
This is my absolute favorite drink ever! I get it whenever I can. It includes root beer, toasted marshmallow, vanilla, and half and half. I love the very toasty flavor and the milky aftertaste. Try this dirty soda now!
So, go check out the Sweet Spot! It is located in the old Fitters' Building downtown Ellensburg at 114 W 4th Ave Suite 102.
Facts About The Month of May
Amelia Wooten
As we enter May, you can read this article to learn more about the month, and some fun facts that you might not have known!
There are 3 holidays in May
Memorial Day: This holiday falls on the last Monday, May 26th. Memorial Day mourns the people who have died in the U.S military while serving the nation.
Cinco de Mayo: This holiday is on May 5th, celebrating Mexico’s victory over the French army in the Battle of Puebla on May 5th, 1862.
The last widely known holiday is, of course, Mother's Day! Mother’s Day is on May 11th, celebrating all the mothers who love and make sacrifices for their families and their contributions. Tell your mom, grandma, or any other maternal figure in your family, “Thank you!”
symbols that represent may
The emerald, May’s birthstone, represents love, success, and new beginnings.
The animal of the month for May is a bull, which also represents the Zodiac sign Taurus, which applies to people born from (April 20-May 20). The Gemini is also one. (May 21-June 20.)
May is the 5th month of the year, and has 31 days. It is named after a Greek goddess named Maia. Maia is the goddess of growth and nature, just like spring, with all the blooming plants and flowers!
random, interesting facts
No U.S president has ever died during May, but in every other month of the year, at least one president has died.
May seems to be a good time to watch the Star Wars movies, with May 4th being National Star Wars Day, because it sounds like “May The Force.” If you’re a Star Wars fan, go and re-watch the movies!
A meteor shower occurs every year in May, called the Eta Aquariids meteor shower. Between April 19th and May 28th is when it passes by Earth. It was discovered in 1870, and is easier to view from the equatorial areas of the world.
On May 1st, 1931, the Empire State Building opened its doors for the first time. At this point, it was recorded as the tallest building in the world, but since then, many buildings have taken that title.
Although May is mostly known for spring and flowers, it also has a lot of interesting facts tied to it!

The Mistake That Killed Millions
Adithya Rajendran
Throughout history, there have been many mistakes that have caused much tragedy. Such as the Chernobyl Disaster, an event caused by flawed design and lack of safety customs which resulted in only 31 deaths but also thousands of children gaining thyroid cancer, along with the spread of radiation across Europe. Or the sinking of the Titanic, caused by the misjudgment of the distance of an iceberg ahead by Captain Edward Smith that killed 1,500 people.
But one mistake caused the deaths of over 70 million people. One mistake made by one man caused World War 2 and the countless atrocities within it.
The Encounter
It was September 28, 1918, World War 1. British private Henry Tandy served near the French village of Marcoing in the Trenches, attacking the German Trenches. Henry Tandy was one of the most highly decorated British private soldiers (Meaning most awarded), often referred to as a war hero. He was also a recipient of the Victoria Cross for his bravery, “the highest award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces.”-Wikipedia.
After hours in the Trench, Tandy saw the silhouette of a person in the distance. He puts his gun up and sees that it is an unarmed wounded German soldier. Despite the amount Tandy killed, he decided to lower his weapon and spare the wounded German Soldier. However, this act of kindness would cause him to be remembered not as a brave soldier, but instead something worse.
The Cause of the Act of Kindness
About 21 years later, World War 2 began. There were countless atrocities and war crimes, all because of a certain German global leader. After WW2, Tandy was no longer remembered for being a war hero. He was now remembered as the soldier who made a mistake that killed millions. What was this mistake you ask? Well, it was the error of sparing the infamous Adolf Hitler. That’s right. The German soldier Tandy Spared was a 29-year-old Lance Corporal Adolf Hitler who became the German global leader who killed millions.
What if Tandy didn’t let Hitler go?
If Tandy had imprisoned or shot Hitler in his encounter, then he could have massively changed the course of history. He could have prevented the Holocaust and the Cold War. The US wouldn’t have become a global superpower, and scientific advancements in military technology would not have been made. Such as nukes, radars, and jet engines which led to the creation of the first fighter jets.
Is this Story True?
This story is debated on if it is true or not. Mainly because of the lack of evidence that he did spare Hitler, and also the amount of evidence that makes it seem like the encounter never happened. Such as the military records that say that Hitler took a leave from the military before the alleged encounter, or the inconsistencies of how this story seemed to originate after the war. But Tandy did state to a reporter when he became aware of who he spared or who he thought he spared that “If only I had known what he would turn out to be. When I saw all the people, women, and children he had killed and wounded, I was sorry to God I let him go.”
What do you think? Do you think this story could be true?
Do you think this story is true?
Also, what would you do if you were in Henry Tandy’s shoes during the time he saw the wounded German soldier?
What would you do?

Mandalorian History
Part 3
Miah Littrell
In this article, you will learn the history of the Mandalorians from the Clone Wars and beyond.
Note: This article is about legends' history; legends are everything before Disney owned Star Wars and changed the history.
quick facts
Jaster Mereel's apprentice is Jango Fett. He adopted him because he found him as an orphan after a fight and raised him like a son until his untimely death.
Jaster Mereel’s personal ship is an Amphibious Interstellar Assault Transport/infantry.
During 60 BBY (Before the Battle of Yavin)
A Mandalorian warrior by the name of Jaster Mereel became Mand’alor and started a cultural reform, laying out new guidelines for Mandalorian behavior. The book he wrote was the Supercommando Codex. Jaster declared that any Mandalorians who still wanted to fight should work as highly paid soldiers, conducting themselves as honoured mercenaries. Not all agreed or accepted the Codex or Jaster’s reforms. The people who opposed were the horrific followers of Tor Vizsla splintered and formed the Death Watch. The Supercommandos that remained loyal to Mereel claimed the title of true Mandalorians. The Aka'liit could not allow the Death Watch to stay because they strongly opposed their ways. Still, they could not support Mereel’s faction either, because any action of Mandalorian violence was prohibited, and they are strongly against what they stand for. During this conflict, they chose to stay a neutral force and left the conflict, then the True Mandalorians and Death Watch started a bitter civil war.
The Mandalorian Civil War, as it came to be known, affected many of the Mandalorians and their clans that participated; those living farther away were rarely affected. This war was centered on the differences in ideologies between Jaster Mereel and Tor Vizsla and would be the future's path. The war eventually expanded onto the farming world of Concord Dawn. During one of the battles, Jaster and his soldiers fled and had to seek refuge on Concord. They hid on a farm of a local Journeyman Protector. When the Death Watch found them and found Fett providing hospice to their enemies, Tor horrifically and brutally interrogated Fett in front of his youngest son, Jango. Before Tor was able to kill Fett because he refused to give up Jaster and his soldiers, Fett’s wife started to gun them down, killing one before she was killed in the process. The Death Watch returned fire, killing Fett and his wife. Jaster rescued Jango from the resulting fight before fleeing into the fields along with his soldiers. While fleeing from the Death Watch, Jango showed Jaster a large irrigation pipe and led his soldiers into it to fully conceal themselves.

Recipe
Creme brulee
Harper Bononcini
This is the perfect vanilla crème brulee recipe. It's silky, creamy, and delicious with a thin and crispy caramel coating to crack open and enjoy every bite!
Ingredients
- 1 ½ cups heavy cream
- 4 large egg yolks
- ¼ cups granulated sugar + more for the crispy coating
- Pinch of salt
- ½ vanilla bean pod, or 1 tsp vanilla bean paste
Directions
Preheat oven to 300F.
Add the heavy cream and vanilla to a saucepan and stir. Heat over low heat until the cream starts to simmer (not a full boil).
Add egg yolks, sugar, and salt to a bowl and whisk until the yolks break down.
Once the cream is simmering, slowly pour about a fourth of the mixture while continuing to whisk. Then add the remaining cream and whisk it gently until combined. Don't overmix.
Divide the cream mixture equally between 3 small ramekin dishes, filling them almost to the top.
Meanwhile, boil 5-6 cups of water in a tea kettle or saucepan.
Place the ramekins inside a larger glass baking dish and carefully add boiling water to that dish. Fill around the ramekins, about halfway to the height of the ramekins.
Carefully lift the tray with the water and ramekins and place it in the oven for 30-40 minutes until the creme brulees are set around the edge but still have a wobble in the middle when gently shaken.
Immediately transfer the ramekins to the fridge, and cool overnight (or at least 4 hours).
When you are ready to eat them, sprinkle a thin layer of granulated sugar on each ramekin, and use a kitchen blowtorch to caramelize the sugar. It should become a deep brown color. Hold the blow torch at 45 degree angle.
Serve & enjoy!

Game Review
Link’s Awakening Delivers Mysterious Adventures on the Nintendo Switch
Mrs. Carly Clark
With the debut of the Switch 2 just around the corner, Nintendo has been on people's minds. While you're waiting for the Switch 2, you should play The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening, which was released on the Switch in 2019. This is a fantasy-adventure game with plenty of puzzles to solve along the way.
Something that most readers probably don’t know is that this game is a remake. The original LoZ: Link’s Awakening was released on the original Nintendo Gameboy in 1993. The game was known for being odd and quirky, and for lots of Nintendo “easter eggs” (including encounters with a Chain Chomp and Yoshi, both from the Mario franchise). All of the quirky charm that made the original a beloved classic is beautifully recreated in the Switch version.
The Story
In the usual LoZ fashion our friend and hero, Link, awakens on a beach on a mysterious island with no memories of who he is or how he ended up face down in the sand. Link quickly learns of some mysterious happenings on the island and, of course, gets right to work helping the local townspeople. Players will guide Link around the island through dungeons and on quests as he attempts to uncover the mysteries of the island and figure out how he ended up stranded there.
New Features
This remastered version of Link's Awakening has two new features: the Chamber Dungeon and Amiibo support. Similar to the Super Mario Maker games, the Chamber Dungeon feature allows players to build their own dungeon experience using pre-made chambers collected during the main quest. These chambers can be arranged in many different ways to complete objectives and challenge your friends. Any Legend of Zelda Amiibo will play a role in this dungeon-making because they'll give you exclusive rooms or items to add to your dungeon. With the Link's Awakening Amiibo, players will be able to unlock one of Link's greatest foes: Shadow Link.
Reviews
This game earned an outstanding score of 9.4 from game critics at IGN. According to IGN, “The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening is a grand remake of one of the most beloved entries in The Legend of Zelda franchise.”
My Thoughts
I played through the original game several times as a kid and teenager and can confirm that this remake definitely improves upon the original. The game is beautifully remastered with cute “chibi-style” visuals and a wonderful soundtrack. I wholeheartedly recommend this fun and challenging game to both casual and hardcore gamers alike.

Interview with Mr. Wilson, EHS Woodworking teacher
What recommendations do you have for incoming freshmen?
“Bring creativity, it’s as much of art as it is wood.”
How do students get involved in woodworking competitions?
“Skills USA is what we partner with for state competitions and go to regionals with the lower valley schools.”
With all the students you have, how do you keep them from harming themselves?
“We take a couple of weeks getting to know the tools and how to use them, and we also have parents sign a parent permission form.”
What kind of projects do you have students make?
“Usually whatever they want, sometimes I have them make sample furniture, guitars, skis, snowboards, skateboards, and they can also do C and C work (Computer and Comeric)”
Interview with Atlas Walker, EHS student
One of Mr. Wilson’s students interviewed is Atlas Walker. He has been woodworking for six years, so he has a good idea of what he’s doing.
Is Mr. Wilson involved in the class?
“Yes, every day he’s teaching kids greatness and fixing their mistakes.”
What are the main tools you have access to?
“All the sanders, the table saw, the drill press, not usually the band saw, etc.”
What advice do you have for incoming freshmen?
“Try to be involved, especially in woodshop, so they know you’re serious, share knowledge with others even if you might be wrong.”
