Year 6 Author Talk
On Tuesday, Year 6 went to Southend Library to hear the fantastic author, Claire Linney talk. She shared her love of time travel and black British history during the Tudor and Victorian times. Claire challenged misconceptions about black people in the past using evidence that many were born in this country and had skilled jobs. We were very impressed with how well the children listened and joined in with the session. Ask them if they remember any of the Victorian slang! One of the children said, "It was great learning about the Victorian streets and made me wonder what would happen if I lived there."
Nursery
Nursery this week have enjoyed a range of ‘sensory’ and ‘messy’ activities.
We have explored shaving foam which was so much fun. We enjoyed pretend cooking with it and making marks in the builders tray. We have also enjoyed water, playdough and sand, both wet and dry.
We have also enjoyed learning lots of new songs and rhymes which everyone is enjoying.
REMINDER: Please remember the nursery session start and finish times.
- Am session- 8.45-11.45
- Pm- 12.15-3.15
Please try to arrive at these times as it can be very disruptive to the children.

They have been practising recognising their names and writing them independently.

Year 1
Year 1 have really enjoyed their geography lesson this week. Banjo the cat came for a visit before he went off to Japan. We practised the continents song and looked at some physical and human features that Banjo would be visiting in Japan.
The children have continued to work hard in maths and we have introduced them to fact families for numbers within 10.
In our PSHE lessons this week, we have been talking about our mental health and why it is just as important as our physical health.
REMINDER: Make sure reading books are in school every day. Your child reads with many adults during the week.
Clothing must be named. We cannot find a jumper or cardigan or coat or shirt, if they have no names on them. There are 60 children in year 1.

PE & Sport
Online Safety
When children and young people experience traumatic or difficult life events, their emotional world can be shaken, and the impact may show up in their behaviour, mood, or relationships. Whether it’s bereavement, a family breakdown or witnessing something distressing, the support of trusted adults can be key in helping them feel safe again. This guide looks at how to create a nurturing environment to help young people process difficult feelings.
It also shares clear, actionable strategies to promote recovery – from building emotional literacy and creating a predictable routine to recognising signs that further help may be needed. Sensitive language, patience, and presence all play a part in empowering children to move forward at their own pace. With the right support, they can rebuild a sense of security and resilience.

Attendance
Sickness absence and attendance
Already this term, we have seen several pupils with increased absences due to illness, which are having a significant impact on their overall attendance figure. If your child has been identified as having experienced frequent absences, you may be contacted to attend a Attendance Support Meeting where we can work together to ensure the right support is in place especially if there is a diagnosed condition or ongoing issue, that we need to take it into account.
As we resume our Thursday Attendance Support Meetings this week, we kindly ask all parents and carers to check their access to Arbor to review their child’s current attendance record.
Your partnership is vital in helping us maintain strong attendance and ensuring every child has the best opportunity to thrive.
If you need help accessing Arbor or have any questions, please contact the school office.
Being here Is half the Battle.
Is Poor Punctuality Affecting Your Child’s Learning?
Arriving late to school—even by just a few minutes—can have a significant impact on your child’s learning and confidence. When children miss the start of lessons, they miss key instructions, disrupt the flow of the classroom, and may find it harder to settle into their day.
We encourage all parents and carers to reflect on their child’s punctuality. Is your child regularly arriving after registration? Could morning routines be adjusted to support a smoother start to the day?
Every minute of learning counts, and good punctuality helps build strong habits for life. If you’re experiencing challenges with morning routines or need support, please don’t hesitate to contact us—we’re here to help.
Aim to attend school 100% of every week.
Contact us
If you would like to talk to someone for support or advice on attendance or punctuality, please do not hesitate to contact the Attendance Team and ask to speak to, Mrs Dowd our Attendance Administrator or Mrs D Morris our Assistant Principal and Senior Leader for Attendance, you can also pop in to the school office to request to speak to one of us ace to face, alternatively you call the school or send us an email to attendance@pgps.porticoacademytrust.co.uk we are here and we are always happy to help!
