Welcome Dustdevils!

Monday, Sept. 15, 2025

Dear University Community,

  • MobFest was the place to be Friday. Before gametime, visitors enjoyed visiting booths featuring crafts, desserts, merchandise, and services. The spirit came alive thereafter with Dustdevil Men’s Soccer taking on the University of Jamestown Jimmies and earning a 3-1 victory. The victories continued Sunday with a decisive 6-0 win over the Adams State Grizzlies.
  • Also on the athletics front, kudos to Ian Rono of our Men’s Cross-Country team, who broke the TAMIU school record in the 4-mile at the University of the Incarnate Word Invitational. He won the individual race with a time of 18:45, setting a new TAMIU record.
  • Congratulations to our Dr. Gilda Y. Martínez, College of Education assistant professor, for her leadership in Saturday’s presentation here of the 4th Annual Unidos Para Texas Education Conference. The Conference brought together advocates, educators, and researchers committed to advancing quality education for all students.
  • This Week: It’s Coffeehouse Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. in STC 114 as out Career Café welcomes TAMIU alum and City of Laredo Fire Chief Guillermo Heard. He’s dedicated 24+ years to the City of Laredo. He’s also a Family Nurse Practitioner and serves as the City’s Emergency Management Coordinator. Find out more.
  • It’s time to meet our Sole Finalist for President of TAMIU, Dr. Christopher Maynard. We’re hosting a reception for students, faculty, and staff this THURSDAY afternoon, details at Trailblazer link above. Stop on by!
  • On Thursday, head to the Student Center Rotunda from 10 a.m. to noon as the QEP Program presents “LEARN How to Garden in a Glove.” Take home a green friend. Dig in for details.
  • Also Thursday, from 1 – 3 p.m. in the Student Center Theater, watch a film screening and Q&A session, “Film by Film: A South Texas Filmmaker’s Story,” with award-winning filmmaker and Texas native Sharon Arteaga. This event presented by the Laredo Film Society and TAMIU.
  • Set a Reminder for next Wednesday, Sept. 24 at 7:30 p.m. in the CFPA Recital Hall as we welcome the Palmetto Saxophone Quartet Recital for a free performance.
  • Our City of Laredo Tennis Complex at TAMIU, in addition to being recognized as one of the nation’s Outstanding Facilities by the U.S. Tennis Association, is now hosting College Night every Tuesday from 7 – 8:45 p.m. for enrolled students, free of charge. You can practice and socialize at the same time!
  • While the new concrete lanes were completed this weekend, as the concrete cures over the next few days, continue to exercise caution and patience with loop construction at our University Boulevard Entrance. From the South, use Entrance 3. From the north, the Loop or Casa Verde. Anticipate delays, slow down, exercise caution, and be prepared for sudden stops. The new lanes should open very soon.

Always remember to make the most of your formal education and your lifelong education thereafter, for as musician B.B. King has noted:

“The beautiful thing about learning is that no one can take it away from you.”

Let’s Go Dustdevils!

TAMIU Ranked 3rd in Nation Among Best Four-Year Hispanic-Serving Colleges by Washington Monthly

TAMIU has once again been recognized by Washington Monthly Magazine’s 2025 College Guide, this year as #3 in the nation in its new Best Four-Year Hispanic-Serving Colleges ranking.

TAMIU also earned a #2 ranking for Lowest Net Price in the South and repeated as one of the nation's Top Ten-ranked Southern Colleges in its "Best Bang for the Buck" category, which reviewed 100 institutions. TAMIU has appeared in the Top Ten since its inception.

“We are always pleased to see that the TAMIU experience we deliver daily is appreciated and valued. We believe these rankings, coupled with the most affordable tuition of any South Texas university, have helped drive our enrollment milestone this semester of over 9,000 students, clearly delivering on our core, founding mission. We’re most proud of receiving recognition for our graduation rates, however. These rankings are also notable because they value experiences like public service and research, which TAMIU students, faculty, and staff uphold with pride.”

100+ TAMIU Students Study Abroad, Celebrate with ‘Global Wrap Up’

This year saw over 100 students from TAMIU, many of whom are funded by the Guadalupe and Lilia Martínez Foundation, pack their bags and explore the world through a study abroad opportunity. Offered through the TAMIU Office of International Experiences, faculty students and staff traveled to over 13 countries and celebrated their experience during a “Global Wrap Up” event held Sept. 4, 2025.

During the celebration, travelers were able to connect with other study abroad students, enjoy a reception and gather for a commemorative group photo.

Caution: Lane Shift Made by TxDOT on University Boulevard

As you make your way to TAMIU on this first day of the Fall Semester 2025, please note that TxDOT has revised the entrance/exit plan for TAMIU’s University Boulevard effective Friday, Aug. 15 through Monday, Sept. 29, 2025, subject to change.

What Does This Mean?

Traffic entering and exiting the University via University Boulevard will now do so through the southernmost lanes of University Boulevard. The northernmost lanes are now closed.

What Can I Do?

As much as possible, those entering from the South (i.e., Jacaman) should use the preferred Entrance/Exit 3. TxDOT has erected additional approach signage encouraging vehicles to slow down in advance of Entrance 3.

Those entering from North of campus can still do so from Loop 20 or Casa Verde Road but should exercise caution given the new lane shift.

Important:

Anticipate travel delays. Slow down. Consider car-pooling. Always exercise caution. Be prepared for sudden stops.

Anything Else?

An enhanced University Police presence on University Boulevard will help ensure everyone complies with all traffic signage and laws. The University is continuing to coordinate with TxDOT and we’ve been studying traffic flows and peak entrance/exit usage. We will quickly pivot to those options as needed.
