A Rare Opportunity to Build a State-of-the-Art Cancer Hospital in New York City
The Mount Sinai Tisch Cancer Center has been named by the National Cancer Institute as a “Comprehensive Cancer Center,” the highest designation awarded to cancer centers in the United States. Placing Mount Sinai among the top one percent of cancer centers nationally, this recognition affirms the breadth and depth of our cancer research, clinical excellence, and commitment to health equity. Now, we are embarking on a milestone project—The Tisch Cancer Hospital—a new, ultra-modern, and deeply compassionate space at the heart of Mount Sinai’s Upper East Side Manhattan campus.
When patients come to the Mount Sinai Tisch Cancer Hospital, opening in 2030, they will be embraced by a community of clinicians, staff, and other patients who are deeply attuned to the physical and emotional challenges of a cancer care journey. Cancer is a formidable adversary, and this deep understanding will support patients as they navigate the highs and lows of a cancer care journey. The Tisch Cancer Hospital will also be home to clinicians who go above and beyond the top of their practice as well as scientists unearthing the root causes of cancer and designing targeted and personalized therapeutics. By centering our research initiatives in one location, and in close proximity to the patients who inspire us, both our unparalleled care and breakthrough science will lead to cures that are patient-centered at their core.
Designed for Patients and Caregivers
Time and time again, it has been proven that patients fare better surrounded by their loved ones as well as others receiving the same type of care. The Tisch Cancer Hospital will unify our clinical spaces and welcome patients and their families into a singular place of hope and healing.
In imagining the Tisch Cancer Hospital, it is paramount to understand what matters most to patients, from a sense of sanctuary to a warm, welcoming, and calm environment where they can spend time with loved ones. With 13 days as the average length of stay for a patient with cancer, we have met extensively with patients to form a vision for a hospital that would not just compassionately and fully support the patient’s experience, but also their loved ones, their doctors, nurses, and caregivers. This ethos is one of the values that sets Mount Sinai apart from other cancer treatment options in New York and beyond.
- A two-story atrium and sky garden will be an urban oasis for patients and their families to rest and recharge, or engage with others.
- A family waiting area and café will offer beverages, sandwiches, and other refreshments in a space for socializing.
- Sleeping and showering accommodations will be provided for loved ones to ensure they can stay as long as they choose.
- Private, single rooms give the highest level of care and improves the healing process.
- A spa and salon center will allow patients to not just receive care, but feel cared for during longer stays.
- A wellness center features rooms that can be used for acupuncture, yoga, and other activities.
Our Vision for a Patient-First Approach to Clinical Care
The Tisch Cancer Hospital will be a state-of-the-art cancer care center informed by world-class research, improving the in-hospital clinical experience where technology meets care of the whole human in an ultramodern facility.
In addition to the amenities designed to put the patients’ needs and comfort first, the most advanced technologies, medical equipment, and devices are dedicated to representing the best of what healthcare can be in an urban setting. Technology and design assists in the physical care of people in different stages of cancer treatment and is employed to elevate the environment to one of comfort and convenience.
"New York needs a fully integrated cancer hospital within a networked health care system. We are already the largest health care network in this part of the world. Our expertise is in taking care of disease in patients. Tisch Cancer Hospital will be the hospital within the hospital supported by an expert of all sub-specialties. Supported by best cardiologists, endocrinologists, person taking care of the transplant, nephrologists. That is what will differentiate our cancer care, because cancer doesn’t come in isolation."
– Ashutosh (Ash) Tewari, MD, MBBS, MCh, FRCS (Hon.), Surgeon-in-Chief, Tisch Cancer Hospital
- A 24-hour oncology urgent care intake provides an alternative to the stressful intakes of a typical emergency room, connecting patients with the care they need quickly and safely.
- 72 acuity-adaptable, fully ADA-accessible private patient rooms are on six floors. Every room—or even entire floors—will have the capability to become an ICU space if needed.
- Every patient room has full monitor display for patient education, nutrition, or information on their caregivers along with other digital portals.
- Command Centers for staff will optimize collaboration among teams of highly trained doctors, nurses, and support staff.
- An apheresis unit for cellular therapy treatments will expand on Mount Sinai’s current capabilities with state of the art devices in a comfortable setting.
- A satellite pharmacy fully dedicated to the Tisch Cancer Hospital will be centrally located near the elevator banks so medicine can be delivered directly and quickly to the patient.
Discover a Sustainable Modern Sanctuary for Health and Healing
The Tisch Cancer Hospital’s architectural and design choices integrate light, greenery, and organic design elements to create an oasis in New York’s urban setting. The nature-inspired facility bolsters our commitment to supporting a patient's comfort and to providing peace and sanctuary during their stay.
"When we designed the Tisch Cancer Hospital we did it with the mindset of thinking of the concept of what a hospital looks like today, as opposed to 40 years ago. Our realization was that for our cancer patients to have the level of care and world-class facilities, we needed to have a dedicated cancer hospital. This will make the cancer journey more convenient and wholesome for our patients."
– Luis M. Isola, MD, Director, Cancer Clinical Programs, Mount Sinai Health System
- The Tisch Cancer Hospital’s design is imagined as an urban oasis with greenery, views, natural daylight, and integration of biophilic elements.
- The pedestrian entry is reimagined in terra cotta and copper colors to warmly welcome patients and visitors.
- A sequence of green pockets at street level will elevate the public realm while providing interior privacy.
- The existing structure will be 98% preserved to reduce embodied carbon.
- All-new mechanical systems offer patients the highest levels of comfort and control over their physical environment while floor-to-ceiling glass windows in patient rooms allow full light to come in.
- The building’s HVAC, generators, and full mechanical systems will be state-of-the-art for a climate-controlled and energy-efficient space.
Explore the Future Mount Sinai Tisch Cancer Hospital

The Power of Philanthropy
When the Tisch Cancer Hospital opens its doors in 2030, it will exponentially strengthen Mount Sinai’s whole-patient approach to cancer science and medicine and expand possibilities for bench-to-bedside research. We will have innumerable opportunities to push science further—using real-time feedback from physicians and patients—while making sure the space honors our patients and their loved ones, putting their experience and comfort first.
Thanks to a generous naming gift from James and Merryl Tisch, now is the time to make this dream a reality.
