Canbury School Newsletter 24th may 2024. ISSUE 335

Dear Families, Friends, Students and Staff.

Today is ALL about our amazing, brilliant, resilient students who walked their socks off for an amazing and brilliant local charity! I am so proud of each and every one of you. Three cheers for us all. At the time of writing, we had raised an astonishing £2,363.75 for the 'Saying Goodbye' project, which funds free counselling for young people studying or living in Kingston who are living with the death of a parent - something no child should ever have to face.

Like Canbury, Kingston Bereavement Support is a tiny, local charity which supports young people - a perfect partnership! After half term we will bring you the final total and some more photos, but for now, feast yourselves upon the pictures below. There's also still time to donate if you wish, please just click here.

And thank you to all those who have contributed to this poignant, yet positive, cause.

We return to school on Monday 3rd June at 08.10am. Enjoy the half term break.

Enjoy the weekend.

Canbury School sponsored walk - part 1, whereby no-one really wants their photo taken....

We made a poster, we made flags, Mr Barnes took the register, Mr Hussain and his depleted Sixth Form were not bowed, we cajoled walkers into having their photos taken - and then we were off!

Talk about having it easy.

What's all this then? News has reached us from our spies in the Duke of Edinburgh Award camp that HOT CHOCOLATE was on the menu this week. Hot chocolate? We thought it was freeze-dried fish and water for all! Unbelievable.....

"This year’s DofE cohort undertook training this week to prepare them for their upcoming expedition after half term", writes Mr McGregor. "The campers covered a variety of skills, from route planning and navigation to what to do when (not if!) they get lost. Expeditioners also learnt how to put up tents and discussed what kit they would need.

Finally and most importantly - food! Walking for up to six hours a day for two consecutive days means you need some decent grub, and a hot meal in the evening. In an excuse for learning how to use a trangia (a camping stove) safely, we even just had time to make some hot chocolate, complete with authentic grass scrap garnish."

Remember - there are DofE kit lists on Google Classroom as well as a meal plan for ideas.

Expedition dates: Thursday 13th June - Friday 14th June. And remember - no brand new gear for the expedition - we don't want students trying to break in new walking boots en route. Now that is a recipe for disaster!

Canbury School sponsored walk part 2 - whereby we spot some wildlife along the way.....

Luckily the Risk Assessment we carried out beforehand ensured we all kept our distance from wildlife and other animals - the ones in baseball caps definitely looked the most dangerous.....

Half term House competition opportunity!

Woo hoo. Just in time for the May half term break (which we are soooo excited about) here's a chance to get creative, have fun and get some House Points for your House. Read on to see how creative Mr Goodyear and Miss Starnowski are inviting you to be! What are you waiting for?!

Canbury School sponsored walk part 3 - in which it feels good to be alive.

Our day out in Richmond Park was just so much fun. Different groups of students walked and talked, Mr Fairbrass crept out from the cupboard under the stairs and felt the sun on his face, students went retro and looked at physical maps (not their mobiles) and yes, the sun shone!
