Shaping the Future of Global Sustainability Policy Tue, 22 Jul 2025

The event

The need for international cooperation has never been greater. The "triple planetary crisis" of climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution is a global threat that requires global solutions. But what are the routes for academic research to influence decision-making on an international scale? Attendees learned how the University of Manchester's research and expertise have shaped international sustainability policy through diverse real-world examples.

The event consisted of a live panel Q&A with academics who have worked with international policymakers followed by a hands-on workshop led by Policy@Manchester, which provided introduction to routes for research impact through policy engagement at local, national, and international levels.

The panel was chaired by Professor Mike Shaver, Professor of Polymer Science & Director of Sustainable Futures, who was joined by:

Diana Mitlin - Professor of Global Urbanism in the Global Development Institute and CEO of the African Cities Research Consortium

Matthew Paterson - Professor of International Politics and Director of the Sustainable Consumption Institute

Wasundara Doradeniya - PhD Researcher at the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research
