YSGOL GYFUN TREDEGAR COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL's summer NEWSLETTER 2025

A message from our Headteacher

I can’t quite believe we are already at the end of the academic year 24-25 – the year has simply flown by having been saturated with a multitude of activities, events and trips alongside a plethora of fantastic teaching and learning curricular and extra-curricular opportunities. Our newsletter is jam-packed full of this term’s adventures!

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the work of the phenomenal staff here in our school. Teachers, Teaching Assistants and all our Support Staff have once again gone over and above work to realise our vision and ensure we provide an outstanding, holistic education for every pupil.

One of the key aspects of this year had been to listen carefully to the voices of our community, from pupils and staff, to parents and governors. Following a significant number of responses to our many stakeholder surveys, we have undertaken a considerable amount of work to review and refine our current systems and procedures as part of our ‘You said, We did’ model. We have taken on board all of your concerns and from September will be launching the new policies to address your issues raised.

The new and revised policies will address your concerns regarding behaviour, toilets, mobile phones and communication. Several of these polices have already been shared with you via Class Charts and all will be available on the website from September 1st.

Our school motto is ‘Working Together For Success’ and is absolutely vital that we all work together to secure improvements in the areas identified. We make no apology for our high expectations and standards and kindly remind you all that you have agreed to adhere to our policy expectations as set by the Governing Body of the school by selecting our school for your child.

I hope you have a wonderful summer break and I will look forward to seeing all our pupils on Wednesday September 3rd.

Mrs Leaves,

Headteacher

English

It has been another busy half term in which we have enjoyed the weather and have said goodbye to our year 11 cohort. We wish year 11 all the best for their summer results and look forward to seeing you all in August.

Year 7

Year 7 have been delving into discussions and exploration of language through the study of Beowulf. Grappling with the Late West Saxon Dialect of Old English, students have been studying the tale of the Scandinavian hero Beowulf, who bravely defeats the monster Grendel and Grendel’s mother. Outside of the textual study, students have each taken part in the creation and production of a pod cast in which they have explored the origins and evolution of communication. We have been blown away by the way in which students conducted thorough research in order to support this task. We look forward to seeing how our year 7 cohort progress into year 8. Gwaith da.

Year 8

This term, our Year 8 students have been studying The Bone Sparrow, a powerful and thought-provoking novel that has sparked deep engagement across the year group. Through exploring its themes of identity, hope, resilience, friendship, and the plight of refugees, students have developed a deeper understanding of important global and humanitarian issues. The study of the novel’s characters and plot has opened the door to sensitive and meaningful discussions around injustice, belonging, and the importance of empathy. We have been thoroughly impressed by the maturity and thoughtfulness students have brought to their work and the respectful way they have responded to the text.

Year 9

In order to best prepare them for the year ahead, year 9 have studied a range of creative and non-literary writing such as letters, emails, narratives, descriptions, monologues and more. They have worked incredibly to refine their CRAFT and to understand key aspects of purpose, tone, layout and audience. Pupils have applied their skills to tasks such as ‘Write a monologue for a time in which you were about to make an Olympic dive’. Pupils applied their imagination skills as well as they creative writing techniques and made a real splash! Year 10 will provide plenty of opportunities to utilise these skills and we look forward to beginning the new qualification with this cohort.

Some of our year 9 classes also received a presentation workshop with Richard Hull from Confident Communicators. Within the space of 2 hours, students were able to present a mini presentation, without notes, in front of their whole class! We were so impressed with their levels of confidence and know that this experience will hugely support their GCSE presentations.

Year 10

It’s been a term full of persuasion and rhetoric for our year 10s. We were incredibly lucky to have Richard Hull from Confident Communicators back with us for an additional two days in order to run more successful workshops for year 10. Students positively engaged with the workshop and gained excellent experience and advice for presenting and participating in a group discussion. In class, the year group have been considering how to write compelling persuasive speeches, using a range of writing strategies. Students have also received the opportunity to participate in group discussions, thus strengthening their communication skills. We would like to take this opportunity to congratulate our year 10 cohort on their hard work demonstrated throughout this year and we look forward to their English Literature results in August.

As always, we would like to thank all parents and guardians for their continued support. We look forward to the year ahead and wish you all a restful summer break.

Outdoor Learning

There has always been an abundance of outdoor learning opportunities in YGTCS and many Areas of Learning are continuing to offer these wonderful opportunities for our learners throughout the year. Pupils in Year 7, 8 and 9 are currently being assessed for their YGTCS Outdoor Learning Award in readiness for Autumn Term 2025.

14 pupils in Year 11 completed their Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award this Summer following their expedition in April. This was then followed by 39 pupils completing their Bronze award expedition. Some of these pupils will start their Silver award in Year 11, once they have completed their Bronze award. The DofE goes from strength to strength in the school and the preparation in readiness for each expedition is due to the meticulous planning and dedication from our expedition leader Mr Roles. An additional thank you to our past student teachers, Mr Williams and Ms Griffiths and our governors Mrs Waldron, Mr West and Mr Walters for their support on the expedition.

Pupils in Year 9 have had a taste of DofE expedition training, with CPR training and a local walk to Bedwellty Pits with Mr Roles. Nearly 100 pupils participated in both activities in anticipation of them signing up for the DofE Bronze award in Year 10.

The school has entered pupils for the Snowsport Wales South East Wales Schools Slalom Race over the last 3 years, being the only representatives from the Valleys schools in the region. We are extremely proud of those pupils who nominate their selves to do this, committing additional training time and applying themselves in a competitive environment. In recent years we have found success both individually and collectively, this year Seren W from Year 7 finishing 3rd in the U14s unregistered category. Seren, along with Rosie R in Year 7 and Mia D from Year 8, finished 3rd as a team in the girls category.

This year, the YGTCS Skiing Award was introduced to the annual sports awards, to celebrate outstanding commitment, progress, and enthusiasm in skiing. It recognises students who has shown determination, skill development, and a positive attitude on the slopes, representing the school with pride and resilience in a challenging sport. Seren W in Year 7 was the recipient of the 2025 award.

RVE

As we come to the end of another busy term, pupils across all year groups have continued to explore meaningful and thought-provoking themes in RVE. Their enthusiasm and maturity in discussing complex ethical and religious topics remains a credit to them. Here’s a look at what each year group has been working on this summer term:

Year 7

Year 7 pupils have spent the summer term exploring the theme of Suffering. They have taken an in-depth look at the Holocaust, examining not only the historical facts but also the religious and ethical questions it raises. Pupils considered how different faith groups responded to suffering during this time and reflected on how individuals kept their faith in the face of adversity. Through sensitive class discussions, reflective writing, and guided reading, learners developed empathy, moral reasoning, and historical understanding.

Year 8

Year 8 pupils have been studying the theme Events and Experiences, focusing on the role of religious festivals in people’s lives. They have explored the significance of Pesach, Christmas, and Wesak, comparing how each festival celebrates important events in different faith traditions. Pupils analysed the deeper meanings behind the celebrations, such as freedom, peace, and enlightenment, and created creative tasks and presentations to demonstrate their understanding. This topic has helped pupils appreciate the diversity and shared values across religions.

Year 9

This term, Year 9 pupils have been exploring the theme Authority and Governance. They investigated why rules exist in society, the role of morality in law-making, and different views on punishment. Pupils examined religious and secular perspectives on the aims of punishment—such as reformation, deterrence, and justice—and considered the ethical role of prison chaplains. Through debate, group tasks, and ethical dilemmas, pupils developed their ability to evaluate moral questions and express their views clearly and respectfully.

Year 10

Year 10 pupils have made a head start on their Year 11 GCSE content by beginning Unit 2: Human Rights. This unit has prompted deep thinking about justice and equality, as pupils explored key concepts such as prejudice, extremism, censorship, and wealth and poverty. Pupils analysed religious teachings on these issues and evaluated real-world case studies, making cross-faith comparisons and drawing their own conclusions. Their growing confidence in tackling GCSE-style exam questions is preparing them well for Year 11.

Extracurricular

This term, Year 7 and Year 8 pupils had the exciting opportunity to visit both a synagogue and a mosque in Cardiff as part of their RVE learning. The trip gave pupils a first-hand experience of different places of worship and helped bring their classroom studies to life. At the synagogue, pupils learned about key features such as the Torah scrolls and the bimah, and had the chance to ask questions about Jewish worship and tradition. At the mosque, they explored Islamic practices and the importance of prayer, community, and the Five Pillars of Islam. Pupils showed curiosity, respect, and enthusiasm throughout the day, and many reflected on how the visit deepened their understanding of faith in action.

🏅 PE 🏅

What a fantastic year it’s been for the PE Department! We’ve seen outstanding effort, progress, and enthusiasm across all year groups — a real credit to the students and a brilliant reflection of their passion for sport.

We rounded off the year with two unforgettable days of Sports Day, packed with energy, competition, and team spirit. ICT

Key Stage 3

Our Key stage 3 pupils have been working hard on a range of topics. Year 9 have been looking at our theme of “World of Work”, where we look at specific jobs and skills related to the ICT and Technology industry. Year 8 has covered the topic of “Tomorrow's World”, where we have been looking at the world of tomorrow with a focus on our endeavours in space. Year 7 have covered our “CSI” theme where we have been looking primarily at encryption methods and their previous and future applications.

Year 7 had the opportunity to attend a codebreaking challenge set out and delivered by Cyberfirst. This was a really engaging, enjoyable and pertinent challenge as it allowed our pupils to apply their knowledge of cryptography to a real world scenario. Pupils were based in “Hut 6” of Bletchley Park with the challenge of decrypting morse code and Enigma messages to find hidden U-Boats.

Cyberfirst - Empower Girls in Cyber event

Recently, a number of year 10 girls were given the opportunity to attend the “Empower Girls in Cyber” event hosted by Cyberfirst at the Cardiff Met Llandaff Campus. This was a fantastic day where our pupils experienced the application of cyber skills that are present through a range of professions, from the perspectives primarily from females who work in the sectors. Our pupils thoroughly enjoyed the event and came away with a greater perspective on the impact Cyber skills have throughout industry… as well as a goody bag!

The ICT department wishes you all a fantastic Summer and look forward to seeing you all again in the Autumn.

Expressive Arts

The Summer term has been jam packed with extra musical activities making their way to the stage! On Thursday 10th July the Expressive arts department worked collaboratively to showcase the talents of our pupils in the areas of Music, Art, Drama and Dance. It was such a joy to show off the hard work, commitment and talents of our wonderful pupils. The staff have so enjoyed preparing for the concert and we hope those of you who attended enjoyed watching all the performances too!

We are very excited to be taking a number of pupils to the Met in Abertillery before we finish for the summer, to watch a production of Beauty and the Beast. This will be an excellent opportunity for pupils to get a taster of what to expect when it comes to our own performance of Beauty and the Beast in July 2026 at the Beaufort Theatre. Auditions will be taking part during the 2nd week of September. Pupils have been given audition packs for prospective roles during the last week of term and these can be accessed on the ‘Beauty and the Beast’ Google Classroom. The code for those wanting to join the google classroom/be involved in the production, has been put on Classcharts.

Peripatetic lessons will start back the 2nd week of September. All those pupils who were receiving either piano, voice, drum or guitar/ukulele lessons last term will continue to receive lessons in September. A reminder that pupils need to check the noticeboard outside the expressive arts rooms to see what time their lesson is and are responsible for remembering their lesson time. If pupils cannot attend the lesson for whatever reason, they need to inform myself or their peripatetic teacher.

The department are very much looking forward to the year ahead and providing all pupils with exciting extra-curricular opportunities as well as delivering our engaging KS3 curriculum. We are especially looking forward to embarking on a new journey with our new Key Stage 4 Music and Performing arts pupils.

To keep up with everything Music and Drama related, please follow our Instagram pages where you will also find photos and videos of our wonderful pupils in action!

@ygtcs_expressive_arts_music and @ygtcs_expressive_arts_drama.

We will also use this as well as google classroom, to keep pupils and parents up to date with rehearsals for Beauty and the Beast as well as the Christmas concert.

Thank you once again to all our pupils who dedicate such time and commitment with so much enthusiasm too! We hope you all have an amazing summer!

Their enthusiasm and thoughtful contributions led to some excellent class discussions – and even a few recipe ideas!

It’s been a pleasure to see so much engagement and progress across all year groups.

¡Buenas vacaciones!

History

We have had a wonderful Summer Term in the History Department:

Year 7

Year 7 have fully embraced their ‘Humanities’ themed lessons looking at the theme ‘Suffering’ in their History, Geography and RVE lessons. In History, we have been looking at examples of man-made disasters such as Pearl Harbor, the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Chernobyl and Aberfan. The pupils were then able to make an informed decision on whether natural disasters or man-made disasters are the worst type of suffering. The New Curriculum is centred on 4 key purposes and this theme certainly fulfilled three of these in great depth as pupils certainly became; ‘ambitious, capable learners’, ‘enterprising, creative contributors’, and ‘ethically, informed citizens of Wales and the world’. All pupils thoroughly enjoyed this topic area and also able to make evaluations on whether they believe man-made disasters or natural disasters caused the most suffering.

Year 8

During the summer term, Year 8 has been engaged in a fascinating study of the Cold War as part of their ‘Controversy’ theme. Students have learned about the ideological and political conflict between the United States and the Soviet Union following World War 2, which led to a series of confrontations such as the Cuban Missile Crisis, the Berlin Blockade, the Vietnam War and the Space Race. Pupils have explored the complex causes and consequences of this global struggle, examining how events such as proxy wars, espionage, and the arms race created tensions that still resonate today. Discussions have sparked debates about the morality and motivations behind the Cold War, as well as its lasting influence on world politics.

Year 9

This term, our Year 9 students have been delving into the fascinating yet challenging history of Germany under Adolf Hitler as part of their ‘Authority and Governance’ Humanities theme. Through engaging lessons and thoughtful discussions, they have explored Hitler’s early life and rise to power, as well as what everyday life was like for German people during the Nazi regime. Students have examined propaganda, persecution of minorities, and the impact of Nazi policies on youth and families. This important topic has helped them develop critical thinking skills and a deeper understanding of how history shapes societies—and the consequences when power goes unchecked.

Year 10

Year 10 have also had a very busy term and have now completed both their Unit 2 and 3 studies and have sat their GCSE examinations on these units in June. They have all worked very hard this year and have completed a lot of past papers and undertaken revision for regular class tests on past paper questions. We are confident that they will all reap the rewards in their results this summer with grades they can be very proud of and will repeat this same work ethic as we begin our next Unit of work in Year 11 on Hitler’s Nazi Germany.

Year 11

As a department, we would like to take this opportunity to thank our year 11 GCSE History classes. They have been an absolute joy to teach for the last 5 years. Their love for History and the current world around them is fantastic! Their knowledge about current affairs and the links they are able to make with the past in these situations has led to many great debates in the classroom that we have thoroughly enjoyed being a part of! We wish every one of them every success in their futures as I know you are all going to do great and wonderful things - “Dream big, aim high, continue to work very hard at all times and you are going to go far!”

NHS 77th Year Anniversary

We have also celebrated the 77th Year Anniversary of the NHS. First of all, our Year 7 cohort were given the fantastic opportunity to be taken around Tredegar Town Centre for a carousel of activities such as attending The Tredegar Workmen’s Medical Aid Society Heritage Centre, Tredegar Museum, Bedwellty House and a walk along some of the Aneurin Bevan Trail.

Our Year 7 History Ambassadors also took part in a debate competition to discuss current topics regarding the NHS. A massive well done to all who took part, it was pleasing to see how passionate our History Ambassadors were and how much they valued the NHS. A huge well done to Kai and Rosie who were awarded winners of the competition by our judging panel Councillor Chris Smith and Councillor Sue Edmunds.

ART & DT

Art Summer Showcase

Last week we had superb support for our KS3 Expressive Arts performances and art exhibition. It meant the world to our young performers and artists to have such superb attendance to see their art work and performances. It was sold out evening and a superb night to celebrate all Expressive Arts at TCS.

There was an incredible range of talent—from stirring musical numbers from beloved shows like Mamma Mia and Wicked to captivating drama performances and stunning pieces of artwork. Our students have worked incredibly hard to bring these performances and creations to life, and your support encourages them to keep exploring their creativity and passion.

The energy, enthusiasm, and dedication displayed on stage and in the art displays reflect just how much our students have grown and how expressive arts play such a vital role in their education and personal development.

Thank you again for celebrating their achievements with us. We look forward to continuing to progress next term.

Nathan Wyburn PRIDE

Nathan Wyburn, originally from Ebbw Vale in Blaenau Gwent, was presented with a Special Recognition Award by Blaenau Gwent County Borough Council for his contributions to equality, mental health, and LGBTQ+ rights.

He also helped to hold a Pride event in Blaenau Gwent held at Bedwellty House our Year 7, 8, 9 pupils/ artists all contributed to painting an individual feather and this was then displayed on our PRIDE Wings. On the PRIDE event day you could get yourself photographed in front of them.

Nathan was quoted as saying I’m incredibly proud to have been brought up in this area and I really feel it gave me a strong basis for who I’ve become as a person and an artist.

"I endeavour to continue my artwork and advocacy going forward and always hope to receive the call to come home and help with future projects and initiatives in the area.

Councillor Chris Smith, the council's equality member champion and presiding member, said: "With Nathan’s connections, hard work and all-round enthusiasm, we were able to deliver a truly memorable event that was a landmark moment—fostering a sense of unity, respect and joy among both allies and LGBTQ+ individuals."

Despite his international success, Nathan remains deeply connected to his hometown, often leading community art projects and we are very lucky to continue to work with Nathan at Tredegar Comprehensive School.

Design and Technology - Food

C block has been busy with our pupils cooking up a storm!

Year 7 pupils have been looking at their personal values and their food choices can align with these values. They have been looking at the cultural, ethical and nutritional values that can sway their food choices before making their very own burrito bowl to eat.

Year 8 have been looking at their choices and decisions and more importantly why some people choose to follow a vegan or vegetarian lifestyle. They have written a detailed report about the foods each group of people would and wouldn’t eat before making their own vegetarian friendly stir fry.

Year 9 has been looking at healthy active lifestyles and how food affects mood. They then put their knowledge to the test where they were tasked to write a persuasive letter to a school, encouraging them to deliver an assembly to pupils about food reusing anxiety and stress while boosting their mood. Year 9 have started to look at different job roles in the food industry and somehow even attempted some GCSE questions which they have answered amazingly well!

Year 10 pupils have been working hard as always, working on their GCSE theory booklets, completing past paper exam questions and practicing their practical cooking skills, all in preparation for their exams next year.

Skills (Literacy)

This term, the Literacy Team have continued to build on the success we have established throughout the year. Our intervention programmes delivered by Mrs Pearsall and Mrs Williams have continued to facilitate excellent progress and support for learners across the school. Our robust testing schedule and system has given us the ability to understand the progress our learners are making and the insight at when we need to intervene.

Sparx Reader

We have now completed our first full academic year of running Sparx reader and the results continue to be astounding.

Our mission, established in January 2024, was to "get Tred' reading". The figures below are evidence that is Tred' is now certainly reading! Our ongoing mission in the next academic year will be to ensure that our learners are reading for progress as well as pleasure. To ensure our learners are able to access the whole of our curriculum offer, we are aiming to have as many of our readers as possible with a reading age that is the same as their real age or above. This is going to continue to be our goal in the next academic year and we are very excited for another year of working together for reading success!

National Reading Champions Quiz

As part of our mission to ensure eager readers are rewarded, we have built a further enrichment opportunity into the literacy calendar of events: the national reading champions quiz. Team Tred A and Team Tred B did us proud this year at the National Reading Champions Quiz. The teams worked hard with Mrs Williams-Griffiths to prepare for the day and had a fantastic time showing off their reading prowess. We are already looking forward to next year!

The second year of our literacy transition project was a success once again. Mr Llewellyn, Mrs Williams, Mrs Williams-Griffiths and Mrs Pearsall attended each of the primary schools in our cluster to deliver the "All About Me" literacy transition project. This important work gives us the opportunity to visit Year 6 in the environment they currently feel most comfortable in and get to know them as individuals as well as the support and challenge we will need to provide for them in Year 7.

We were once again accompanied by fantastic Year 7 role models who returned to their primary schools as ambassadors for Ysgol Gyfun Tredegar Comprehensive School.

I am excited to see what the next year holds in terms of literacy progress and I look forward to continue working together for the success of your child in all of the literacy strands.

Skills (Numeracy)

Pupils this term have made tremendous progress in their registration activities in Numeracy. Weekly battles on TTRS has allowed everyone to improve on their knowledge of times tables. Our overall champions for Year 7 are Toby T for the most questions answered correctly and then Fynley T for having the fastest average. Our overall champions for Year 8 are Jasper C for the most questions answered correctly and Harley C for having the fastest average. Our overall champions for Year 9 are Amelia D for the most questions answered correctly and Tristan C for having the fastest average. Finally our Year 10 overall champions are Thomas D for the most questions answered correctly and Olivia H for having the fastest average. A special mention to Tristan C who has got the fastest average for all pupils this year. Year 9 being led by Mrs Greenway, have triumphed over all again this academic year, two years running, wow! Da iawn, Mrs Greenway!

Nurture with Miss Green and Mrs Bentley

Year 7 have had an exciting term, growing as enterprising, creative contributors through their science topics on the three states of matter and space. A highlight was using ChatGPT to conduct a virtual interview with an astronaut, which they transformed into eye-catching, informative infographics, effectively communicating scientific knowledge while developing as ethical, informed citizens in a rapidly changing, technological world. In Maths, Year 7 have explored coordinates, developing spatial awareness and accuracy while building the confidence to tackle more complex mathematical ideas. Throughout, they’ve shown themselves to be determined and eager to ask questions, sharing ideas in meaningful ways.

Meanwhile, Year 8 learners have been developing as ambitious, capable learners through their science work on habitats, adaptations, and animal classification. They’ve taken a close look at arthropods and explored the concept of bilateral symmetry by painting butterflies—using creativity to bring scientific learning to life and combining science with art to reinforce key biological concepts. In Maths, they’ve been investigating shape and volume, applying logical reasoning and real-life problem-solving skills to deepen their understanding.

The Base

It’s been a busy and joyful summer term here at the ASD Base. Our learners have embraced the sunshine and filled their days with creativity and activity.

We've enjoyed baking and cooking together—measuring, mixing and of course, tasting our delicious results! The Base has been blooming with colour as we've nurtured our flowers and carefully monitored the progress of our towering sunflowers.

Taking advantage of the wonderful weather, we’ve spent lots of time outdoors painting ornaments and crafting in the sunshine. Games and outdoor play have brought lots of laughter and teamwork.

Our regular walks to the park and around the local area have continued, helping us stay active and connected with our surroundings. We also took part in Sports Day, where our learners gave fantastic performances and showed brilliant team spirit.

As the term draws to a close, we’re proud of all our learners for their hard work and achievements this year. Everyone is looking forward to the adventures and learning that the next term will bring!

Year 7

Can you believe how quickly this year has flown by? Before long, our Year 7 pupils will be moving up to Year 8, ready to become role models for the new cohort of Year 7s. The Summer Term has been packed with activity – from National Tests and Sports Day to exciting sporting fixtures, awards celebrations, showcases, and unforgettable trips. Year 7 have embraced a wide range of events and experiences that have not only enriched their education but also created lasting memories.

Well done, Year 7 – we’re proud of everything you’ve achieved this year!

Attendance

There is still healthy competition between the form classes, with 7P continuing to lead the way at the top of the Year 7 attendance league – well done 7P! However, attendance across all Year 7 forms has dipped slightly during the Summer Term. As a result, Year 7 form classes have seen a drop in their positions in the overall school attendance league.

Below is a snapshot of the current attendance figures for each Year 7 form at the time of writing:

It's important to recognise that many of our pupils have shown outstanding commitment to school this year through their impressive individual attendance.

As a reminder, the Callio individual pupil target is 93% or above – and we are proud of those who have consistently met or exceeded this benchmark. Throughout the 2024–2025 academic year, the school has launched a range of initiatives to promote and reward good attendance. These include the ‘Keep it Green’ attendance competition, which has run all year, as well as monthly whole-school attendance prize draws.

100% Attendance Stars

A special congratulations goes to the following Year 7 pupils who have achieved 100% attendance this year:

Rocco C – 7D

Brooke K – 7C

Lottie P – 7I

This is an outstanding achievement – well done to you all! You should be very proud of your commitment and resilience. Keep aiming high!

Maintaining excellent attendance is vital for every pupil to reach their full potential and achieve their goals. We kindly remind all parents and carers to support our whole-school attendance policy by ensuring that any absences are reported daily.

Together, we can ensure every pupil has the best chance to succeed.

Pride Points and Badge Success

Year 7 pupils have shown incredible enthusiasm and determination this year in collecting Pride Points to earn their achievement badges. Their commitment has been truly impressive!

97% of the year group have earned their Bronze badge – a fantastic show of consistent effort across the cohort.

126 pupils have gone on to achieve their Silver badge.

71 pupils have already reached Gold badge status – that's nearly half of the year group, which is a testament to their dedication and hard work!

Most impressively, 44 pupils have earned the prestigious Platinum badge – the highest number of Platinum awards ever achieved by any year group at this point in the year.

This is an outstanding accomplishment and something the entire year group should be proud of.

Bendigedig, Blwyddyn Saith – you’ve truly raised the bar!

Pupil of the month

Congratulations to the following pupils for being selected as DRICE Pupil of the month throughout autumn term:

MAT Trip to The BBC Wales Studios

On 13th June 2025, I had the pleasure of joining our More Able and Talented (MAT) pupils on an exciting trip to the BBC Wales Studios in Cardiff. It was a fascinating and interactive day, offering a brilliant insight into the world of broadcasting and the cutting-edge technology used behind the scenes. Pupils had the chance to explore a range of media roles – and I was amazed to discover so many budding newsreaders, radio hosts, and weather presenters among our group!

Who knows – one day we might be asking them for their autographs! Well done to all the pupils who took part and represented the school so brilliantly.

Sports Day Success

It was a real pleasure to see so many Year 7 pupils actively taking part in this year’s Annual Sports Day. While there were plenty of impressive sporting performances on display, what stood out even more was the teamwork, determination, and resilience shown by so many of you. A special congratulations goes to Green House, who were crowned overall winners – da iawn! There were countless moments of individual brilliance and fantastic team efforts throughout the day, and I couldn’t be prouder of the way you represented yourselves and your year group.

I am incredibly proud of all the successes this year group has achieved and excited to see the fantastic young people they are becoming. There have been some excellent reports, with many pupils demonstrating outstanding attitudes to learning and a real drive to achieve their very best. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all parents and carers for your ongoing support – it truly makes a difference. I look forward to continuing to work with you all next year as we support our pupils on the next stage of their journey.

Have a wonderful summer!

Year 8

It’s coming to the end of another busy year with year 8, this year seems to have flown by and I can’t believe they are already going into Year 9.

A group of Year 8 pupils participated in Just B Smoke Free which is an NHS campaign which highlighted the dangers of smoking and educated the pupils on how to discourage others from smoking and vaping. These pupils have become smoke free ambassadors for Year 8, well done to everyone who participated in this campaign.

The Year 8 MAT pupils also took a trip to London to Visit the house of Parliament, where they had a guided tour and also sat in on Government debates. The pupils had a wonderful day sightseeing some of the popular spots in London and were privileged to witness some rehearsals for the Trooping of the Colours.

There continues to be a big push on attendance with each pupil having an individual target of 93%. Maintaining good attendance is vital for all pupils in order to maximise the opportunity to learn and develop in order to fulfil potential to reach set goals.

There are currently:

Pupils continue to collect PRIDE Points for excellent attitude to learning and working hard in lessons. 158 pupils have been awarded with a Bronze Badge, 52 pupils have a silver badge, 11 have been awarded with gold and 13 pupils have been awarded a platinum Badge. The pupils need to strive for success and continue to work hard in order to earn the rewards.

Year 8 also participated in Sports Day, it was lovely to see so many pupils taking part and trying their best. The relay races and tug of war demonstrated teamwork and resilience by all that took part. The winning house was Green but all pupils did themselves proud on the day.

There are still plenty of things coming up that Year 8 are taking part in such as the Summer Showcase, sports award night and The Summer Term Trip. I look forward to seeing and hearing about all of these. I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for all your support this year and I look forward to working closely with you again in Year 9.

MAT

At Ysgol Gyfun Tredegar Comprehensive School, we continue to be proud of our commitment to providing exceptional enrichment opportunities for our Most Able and Talented (MAT) learners. This term, pupils across all year groups have enjoyed an exciting programme of experiences designed to challenge, inspire and broaden their horizons beyond the classroom.

Cyber Success: Year 10 Girls Dive into Cybersecurity at Cardiff Met

A group of our Year 10 MAT girls took part in the Empower: Girls into Cyber event at Cardiff Metropolitan University this term. As part of this inspirational day, the girls explored the exciting world of cybersecurity through engaging workshops and talks delivered by leading female professionals in the field. They had the opportunity to take part in a Capture the Flag competition, develop new digital skills, and gain insights into future career pathways in cyber and tech industries. It was a powerful and empowering experience that highlighted the importance of female representation in STEM.

Speaking with Confidence: Year 9 Oracy Workshop with Richard Hull

Our Year 9 MAT learners participated in a highly engaging “Confident Communication” workshop led by communication specialist Richard Hull. The session focused on developing oracy skills through interactive group work and individual speech tasks. Pupils explored techniques for structuring and delivering persuasive speeches, working collaboratively to craft compelling group presentations. The workshop helped pupils develop their confidence, communication and presentation abilities—key skills for both academic success and future careers.

From Buckingham Palace to Westminster: Year 8’s London Adventure

Our Year 8 MAT pupils enjoyed an unforgettable day in London this term, exploring some of the city's most iconic landmarks. Highlights included visits to Buckingham Palace, Westminster, Pall Mall, and the Changing of the Horse Guard. The main focus of the trip was an interactive tour of the Houses of Parliament, where pupils learned about the democratic process, saw the House of Commons and Lords in action, and participated in a hands-on workshop exploring how laws are made. The trip brought learning to life and was a real highlight of the year for all involved.

Lights, Camera, Action! Year 7 Explore BBC Studios

Our Year 7 MAT pupils had the opportunity to visit the BBC Studios in Cardiff for a hands-on exploration of the world of broadcasting. From presenting the news and weather to learning about the technical aspects behind the scenes, pupils were immersed in the excitement of television production. The interactive nature of the tour made for a thoroughly engaging experience, and many of our learners came away feeling inspired about future careers in media and communications.

Attendance and Punctuality

At Ysgol Gyfun Tredegar Comprehensive School we are committed to ensuring that every child receives the highest standard of education and support. Central to this is excellent school attendance and punctuality.

We would like to remind all parents and carers of the importance of regular attendance to school. Regular attendance is directly linked to academic achievement, personal development, and the development of positive social relationships. Children who attend school regularly are more likely to achieve better outcomes and have a greater chance of success in their future endeavours.

Strive for 95!

We would like to extend our sincere thanks for your continued support in ensuring your child attends school regularly. Thanks to your efforts, many of our students have reached the minimum attendance target of 95%, helping us make significant progress as a school. As we celebrate these gains, we are also raising the bar and setting our sights even higher. For the academic year 2025-26, our new whole-school attendance target will be 95%. We believe that every day in school counts, and with your partnership, we are confident our learners can achieve even more. Let’s continue working together to Strive for 95!

GREEN ZONE

All pupils who are in the ‘Green Zone’ have an attendance level of 95% or more. This zone recognises patterns of good to excellent school attendance. Pupils who fall within this zone are more likely to do well at school and achieve good results.

AMBER ZONE

All pupils who are in the ‘Amber Zone’ have an attendance level between 90 and 94.9%. Pupils with this level of attendance are a cause for concern and are at risk of under-achieving at school.

RED ZONE

All pupils who are in the ‘Red Zone’ have an attendance level of below 90%. Pupils who fall within this zone are regularly absent from school and are significantly less likely to achieve their potential. Such pupils will be closely monitored by the Education Welfare Service.

Holidays during term time

Holidays during term time will not be authorised under any circumstances, except in truly exceptional cases. Taking children out of school for holidays significantly disrupts their learning and impacts on their progress.

10 sessions (equivalent to 5 school days) or more will automatically lead to a Fixed Penalty Notice being issued by the Local Authority.

Absence

Whilst we understand that children may occasionally be unwell, it is vital that we are informed of the reason for any absence. Where a child has 10 or more sessions (5 days) of absence due to illness, we will require medical evidence to support any further illness-related absences. This may include a doctor’s note, appointment card, or prescription. This is required as per Blaenau Gwent’s Attendance Pathway.

Letter 1 – On receipt of this letter, you have 5 working days to notify the school of your child’s absence. Failure to contact the school and explain the unauthorised absence will result in an advisory notice which could lead to a fixed penalty notice and / or a referral to the Department of Social Services. This will be sent following 10 unauthorised sessions (the equivalent to 5 days) of absence.

Letter 2 – This is an advisory letter if absence has continued and medical evidence has not been provided to support the absence.

Attendance Improvement Meeting – Parents / carers will be invited to attend a meeting at school with their child’s Head of Year and/or the Education Welfare Officer. This is an opportunity to discuss any concerns and to remove any barriers affecting your child’s attendance.

EWS Referral – A referral will be made to the school’s Education Welfare Service if your child’s attendance is below 90%. This is classed by the Welsh Government as persistent absenteeism. The EWS will work with families to ensure your child improves their attendance.

Fixed Penalty Notice – This will be issued if all stages of the Attendance Pathway has been followed by the school and the EWS. This could lead to prosecution.

Punctuality Matters

Punctuality is just as important as attendance. The school day starts promptly at 8.30am, and we expect all pupils to be on site and in registration with their form tutors, ready to begin learning at this time. Arriving late disrupts not only the learning of the child who is late, but also the learning of others in the class. Persistent lateness can add up to a significant amount of lost learning time over the school year. Unauthorised ‘late’ marks will result in a fixed penalty notice from the Local Authority.

Absence

It is the responsibility of parents and carers to inform the school when their child is absent from school on each day of absence no later than 9.00am.

The school’s Attendance Officers can be notified using the school app, telephone on 01495 713000 or email attendance@tredegarschool.cymru.

Failure to contact the school following three consecutive days of unauthorised absence will result in a referral to Education Welfare Service and / or Social Services.

Please be reminded that on acceptance of your child’s place at Ysgol Gyfun Tredegar Comprehensive School and by signing the home-school contract you have agreed to fully adhere to the school’s policy as set by the governing body.

We appreciate your support in ensuring your child attends school every day and arrives on time, ready to learn. Working together, we can give all our pupils the best possible chance to thrive both academically and socially.

If you have any questions or would like to discuss your child’s attendance, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s Head of Year or the Attendance Officers.

Thank you for your continued support.

Mobile Phones and Digital Devices from September 2025

With effect from 1st September 2025, mobile phones and devices will be banned on school premises during school hours. This decision has been made with careful consideration and in response to this term’s stakeholder survey with the best interests of our students in mind.

The benefits of this mobile phone ban include:

Improved focus and concentration: Without the distraction of phones, students can engage more fully in lessons and activities.

Enhanced social interaction: Encouraging face-to-face communication helps build stronger relationships and social skills.

Better mental health: Reducing exposure to social media and screen time during the school day can help decrease anxiety and stress.

Increased safety: Limiting phone use reduces risks related to inappropriate content and cyberbullying during school hours.

We understand that mobile phones play a significant role in everyday life, and we encourage students to use them responsibly outside of school hours.

A family friendly version of this policy was communicated to parents and carers via Classcharts on Monday 7th July.

For more details about this new mobile phone and devices acceptable use policy and its implementation, please visit the Policies section of our school website at www.tredegarschool.cymru

We appreciate your support and cooperation as we work together to create a more focused and positive learning environment for all our students.
