Reading Girls' School newsletter - 2 february 2024

Principal's message:

I am delighted to share details of an upcoming ARCH Keynote Talk by Clare Balding CBE, one of Britain’s leading broadcasters, on the theme of Dare to be Different. This will take place at The Abbey School on Thursday 22 February at 17.00. Places can be reserved via this eventbrite link. As before, this is a 'sign up and show up' event and students in Year 9 or below should have an adult chaperone (parents are more than welcome!).

I wish you all a restful weekend.

Marika Farrugia, Principal

University of Reading STEM Conference for South Asian Girls

The University of Reading hosted a STEM conference for girls from South Asian backgrounds.

The day started with a tour of the main campus led by university student ambassadors. The girls then joined students from other schools for a STEM activity - the Chemistry of Chocolate. After hearing about the different types of chocolate and why it is good for us, they did a blind taste test to see if they could identify white chocolate (mostly cocoa butter), milk chocolate, and dark chocolate (about 60% cocoa). They then taste-tested two different types of milk chocolate to see if they could identify the differences between them and why they were different.

After lunch there were three amazing guest speakers from South Asian backgrounds who are now leaders in business and education. They talked about the problems they had faced and the obstacles they had overcome and were truly inspirational to the students.

"I think it is really inspiring the fact that we got an opportunity to speak to those guest speakers and learn about their experiences. I believe everyone has their own special journey that consist of difficulties, but opportunities lie within. Knowing this gave me a chance to understand all the options available in life. I’d like to know more about university life and the courses available to pursue in my interests. The fact that Reading University is one of the top 30 universities in both UK and the world surprises me immensely, as now I have an option of a great university near my house. The university on its own is very diverse, with lots of many different cultures and identities. I think something I truly took away from today is that everyone has different experiences and opportunities and we have to embrace them and storm through them, we have to dream big and acknowledge the number of options we have, which not everyone has. We have to learn from them and help others understand them." - Sahasra, Year 10
