Fiber Project Status: Milestone Reached!
A vision by the Central Georgia EMC (CGEMC) Board of Directors and leadership to bridge the digital divide and bring high-speed internet to CGEMC members has become a reality. On December 19, 2024, CGEMC celebrated the remarkable achievement of making high-speed internet available to more than 66,000 rural homes and businesses—two years ahead of schedule! This milestone will also support smart grid improvements, helping restore electricity to homes quickly and efficiently.
Over the course of the project, which commenced in June 2021, CGEMC crews, along with numerous contractors, including right-of-way crews, line crews, and fiber-specific teams, built 3,475 miles of fiber-optic cable, connecting thousands of homes and businesses along the way. To date, more than 15,000 members are enjoying the benefits of high-speed internet, and demand continues to grow.
During the celebration, CGEMC President/CEO George L. Weaver expressed gratitude to all parties involved, highlighting the hard work and collaboration that made the accelerated timeline possible. The event celebrated achievements and highlighted the positive impact the project will have on CGEMC's territory.
For many members, this means reliable access for remote work, online learning, and staying connected with family. This is not just about faster streaming—it is about giving CGEMC’s communities the tools they need to thrive in today's digital economy. With this new fiber network, local businesses can compete globally, students can access world-class educational resources, and health care providers can offer telemedicine services to remote areas.
“When we first started this project in April 2021, there was very little, if any, service with speeds over 100 Mbps available in central or southern Georgia communities. Today, largely due to the work of Conexon Connect partner co-ops, including Central Georgia EMC, these communities are blanketed with access to high-speed internet. This access gives them the advantages necessary for communities to thrive economically and educationally in today’s connected society.” - John Gilmore, Conexon Connect SVP, OSP Construction
This milestone reflects the power of partnerships and sets a precedent for future infrastructure improvements to meet the ever-evolving needs of CGEMC members. With the completion of the fiber network, the CGEMC territory is well-positioned to thrive in an increasingly digital world. Thank you to our forward-thinking Board of Directors, leadership team, employees, and members for their support and patience in helping us bridge the digital divide.

Repair, Refresh, and Renovate With a 2025 CGEMC Residential Rebate!
Did you know that nearly half of the energy used in your home goes to heating and cooling? Upgrading an outdated or aging system can save you money. If your unit is more than 10 years old and needs frequent repairs, it may be time to replace it.
Water heaters use more energy than your refrigerator, clothes washer, dishwasher, and dryer combined. Upgrading your water heater can save you hundreds of dollars every year on energy costs. Visit www.cgemc.com for all the details and to see if you qualify.
*A load management switch must be installed on qualifying equipment by a Central Georgia EMC employee before the rebate can be processed. The load management switch must remain on equipment and in operating status as long as Central Georgia EMC has a load management program. Limit one (1) qualifying heat pump and/or one (1) qualifying water heater rebate per member/household. Heat pump and/or water heater must have been installed on or after January 1, 2025.
You can claim up to $3,200 on your federal taxes for Energy Efficient Home improvements
If you made energy-efficient improvements to your home in 2024, you may be eligible for federal tax incentives. The Energy Efficient Home Improvement credit applies to various upgrades, including Windows and Doors, Insulation, and HVAC Equipment. Visit the IRS website at irs.gov/credits-deductions/energy-efficient-home-improvement-credit for details on qualifying improvements and credit limits.
If you did not make energy-efficient improvements in 2024, it is not too late to plan for 2025 and beyond. The tax credit is available through December 31, 2032. Upgrading your home’s efficiency is a win-win for your wallet and home comfort.
