Visual Communications 2021/2022, Asher Cooke

This portfolio covers my work in my first photography/videography class. In Media Lab 223, we worked on a variety of things. These things included daily prompts, editing with Adobe Software, using equipment for photo and video, utilizing different camera settings, and more. When I was taught the basics of photography and how to record videos, I used a DSLR Canon camera.

OVERVIEW

Here are a few different photos from my Visual Communications course which best exemplify the basic skills I had learned. These skills were; coloring, selective focus, rule of thirds, strong subject, etc.

Editing Focused

These photos showcase the editing skills I learned. In the photo on top, I had used regular color editing. The bottom left photo was based around filters and gradients masking an object. Lastly, in the bottom right photo, I utilized RGB coloring to edit it.

Black & White

These photos were shot with a negative and positive space prompt in mind. Durning this time, I had learned more about using angles and colors to my advantage when taking photos.

Portraits

Here are some of the portraits I took during that same Visual Communications course. All of these photos have multitude of compositions, combined with the photo editing I had learned.

Theme Page

These are photos from a theme page I did on the snow. Each photo was edited with different moods as the reference. Each picture contains different aspects of composition. It was challenging to ensure each photo didn't look the same. It's mostly monochrome and bland outside with a lack of variety in color. This made it difficult to capture brighter, happier photos. In order to combat this, I stuck to lighter areas and focused heavily on editing to keep the highlights and brightness present.

About Me

Hello, my name is Asher Cooke and welcome to my art. I wasn't always sure this was passion though. I first came to the conclusion that I wanted to persue phtography when I chose to take my first photography course my freshman year of highschool. Naturally, I had developed a talent for it and it gave me an idea of what I wanted to do moving forward. At the time though, I was a beginner and I was learning the basics by doing the prompts, following instructions, meeting deadlines and completing weekly theme pages. Furthermore, I was gradually getting the hang of things such as; the mindset required for the photoshoots, how to edit my pictures, ensuring everything follows the prompt/theme, and showing all of my creativity in my work. I spent a lot of time in and out of school editing and taking photos. Keeping at it and practicing those skills has helped me greatly improve over the years. Now, I am very proud of how far I've come and I'm excited to continue to learn and grow this skill.
