The countdown is on for Year 12
Year 12 gear up for their last days!
Over the next 2 Byron Breeze editions, we will be celebrating our Year 12 students and their incredible journey. After 13 years of official schooling, it is time for them to reflect on their achievements, cherish the memories, and look forward to the exciting opportunities ahead. From their first day at school to this milestone moment, our Year 12s have shown resilience, dedication, and growth. Join us as we honour their hard work and wish them all the best for the next chapter of their lives!
The students have been making the most of the time left together and making some fabulous memories.
This week there has been plenty of laughs and creativity! Their dress-ups challenges have included:
- Recreating childhood photos,
- Dressing as “what your younger self wanted to be when you grew up”,
- And of course, the all-time favourites - cross-dressing, and
- “Anything but a backpack.”
Don’t worry, we’ve got plenty of photo evidence to prove just how fantastic they looked (just in case, wink wink). Be sure to check out the photo galleries below and see all the fun for yourself!
Enjoy every moment of your final few days, Year 12!

Year 12 give back in style
Rolling up their sleeves for Big Scrub bushcare!
Yesterday, 60 of our Year 12 students traded the classroom for the outdoors, teaming up with the Big Scrub Bush Regeneration Program. This initiative not only educates people about the history and importance of the land, but also gives everyone the chance to reflect and contribute to its renewal.
In true Year 12 fashion, our students tackled the task in full dress-up mode — dressed as "What their younger self wanted to be when they grew up”
So, if you happened to wander past McLeans Ridges, you may have seen ballerinas, mums with babies, princesses, firemen (and plenty more!) planting over 800 reeds along the water’s edge! A huge effort — with plenty of laughs along the way.
A big thank you to Mr Galletly for organising the day, and to the Big Scrub team for guiding our students through such a meaningful experience.
Game On: Our Sharemarket champions take the lead!
BBHS' nation-leading share traders to 'Ring the Bell' at the ASX in 2025
For the 2nd year running Byron Bay High School students are leading the nation in the ASX Schools Sharemarket Game. With this achievement has come an invitation from the ASX to ‘Ring the Bell’ at their annual Financial Literacy presentation.
Over the past four years Byron Bay High School has consistently entered a keen group of 80-100 student traders in the ASX Schools Sharemarket Game.
This strong level of participation has reflected the school’s emphasis on financial literacy and the enthusiasm of students to develop their skills in trading shares.
In 2024, the school achieved unprecedented results, winning all 3 national prizes, and the NSW prize for the ASX Schools Sharemarket Game, that delivered $2,750 in combined prize money for the students.
This year Byron Bay High School are again at the very top of the national leaderboard, with several students occupying the highest rankings in the Game, along with 20 other students who are also ranked in the top 100 traders in Australia and in NSW.
The school’s ongoing success has resulted in the school receiving an invitation to ‘Ring the Bell’ for Financial Literacy at the ASX in Sydney for a 2nd year running. HSIE teacher Dale Stevenson could not be prouder of the student share traders at Byron Bay High School.
‘With my experience as an ASX securities trader and Reserve Bank analyst, I have been entering students in the Game since I became a teacher over 20 years ago. At Byron Bay High I have been able to deliver my knowledge, skills and experience about the financial markets to the keenest group of student traders and even I have been surprised by the results they are achieving.’
‘The next stage in the journey is to organise our trip to the ASX, where there will be experts on hand to deliver a tour of the share market’. But, according to Mr Stevenson the highlight of the trip, without a doubt, will be the opportunity for students to ring the market bell.
‘The dream of many market enthusiasts is to ring the market bell and we feel very fortunate to have been given this opportunity for a 2nd year in a row.’
Mr Dale Stevenson - HSIE teacher

The art of persuasion: Spotlight on our Debating success
Stage 4 Byron Bay B Debating team wins the 1st round of the Regional Championships!
Our Stage 4 Byron Bay B Debating Team has hit the ground running with a win in Round 1 of the NSW Premier’s Debating Challenge Regional Championships.
The girls put up an articulate, informed, and persuasive fight to beat Wingham High School in a close and challenging debate.
Debating the statement “That all voters should have to pass a politics and media comprehension test before they are allowed to vote” for the affirmative, the girls displayed their most courageous effort yet, and it was clear that each debater has grown immensely in skill and confidence this year.
A huge thank you also goes to Archie D for your effort, time, and amazing chairperson skills. Together, our team continues to be professional and compassionate school representatives every step of the way.
Next week, our team will face The Rivers Secondary College, Lismore High Campus in Round 2 of the knockout championships!

Diving into learning: Understanding our local waterways
The Tallow Creek Catchment - Environmental Change & Management
Students in Year 10 Geography studying Environmental Change and Management are taking part in an innovative citizen science project. The group visited Tallow Creek with Delta Kay and Cate Coorey who shared knowledge, stories and experiences of the creek mouth.
Delta highlighted the connection between the creek and surrounding land as well as the importance of recognising this place as our home to emphasise that it should be cared for as such.
Cate from the Byron ICOLL Centre shared insights about how the ICOLL (Intermittently Closed and Open Lake or Lagoon) is being impacted by the gradual and compounding effects of urbanisation in the Tallow Creek catchment. A StoryMap showing some of the connections can be viewed here:
Students observed the features of the ICOLL, the species of flora and fauna which Delta explained the cultural significance of, as well as the recent changes brought about by the cyclone earlier this year. Next week, the group will visit the upstream part of the catchment at Baywood Chase to investigate the waterways that flow into the creek. Students will again conduct observations and have the opportunity to work with local council employees to better understand the situation.
Connecting their learning in class, with practicing geographers, earth scientists and engineers all underpinned by enduring indigenous perspectives is such a valuable learning experience that they embraced.
One key takeaway and idea to improve our influence on the local waterways is to plant native vegetation in our gardens. Thus reducing our reliance on irrigation, synthetic fertilizers and providing habitat for endemic species. A useful guide can be found at:

Calling for donations for our upcoming P&C raffle
Many thanks to the parents and businesses who supported our Trivia night. It was a great success, raising over $4,000 for the school. Don’t worry if you missed the event you can still get involved in our 2025 fundraising efforts.
We are seeking prizes, big or small, for our fundraising raffle, and we hope we can count on your generosity.
All donations will be acknowledged through the school’s contacts, social media, and the Byron Bay community.
This year our goal is to raise $15,000 to fund a much-needed audio-visual system for the recently renovated school hall. This will equip the hall with the technology it needs to better support assemblies, performances, presentations, and community events, making the most of the recent renovations.
If you can help, please let us know by end of term on Friday, 26 September.
