DESIGN PROPOSAL
The Turntable is a memorial and cultural intervention along the historic rail line in New Orleans, honoring Homer Plessy and reimagining trains as former engines of control and future machines of liberation. Rooted in the site of Plessy's 1892 arrest, this architectural journey traces the legacy of resistance through a modern passenger train experience.
The project culminates in a repurposed roundhouse, Plessy Pavilion--its rotating turntable now a platform for resonance, performance and freedom. Through steel, sound, and motion, the Turntable Resistance transforms the train from a tool of segregation into a stage for remembrance and radical expression. Machines as modes of control or opportunity. Movement as memorial. The question is: how does one create infrastructure that speaks to a well-preserved culture and allows for future growth and flexibility?
