RIZOMAGIC TROPICAL FUTURISM

Colombian Electronic Music • Live Act with Live Visuals

Rizomagic is an electronic music duo created in 2020 by Diego Manrique, director of the avant-garde cumbia orchestra Niño Pueblo, and by Edgar Marún, director of the ethno-afrobeat project Dorado Kandua. Their sound is built upon a dialogue between tropical rhythms of the traditional music of the Pacific and Atlantic coasts of Colombia and electronic music subgenre IDM.

Since the release of their debut album (Voltaje Raizal 2020), they have been reviewed in media outlets such as The Wire, Songlines, and Worldwide FM, among others. They have toured Europe, playing in countries such as the Netherlands, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, Austria, and France, from venues to festivals such as Nuits Sonores in Lyon, France, and Worm Festival in Rotterdam.

The first album was pressed on vinyl by the Italian label Disasters By Choice, while the second album (Marimbitiaos 2023) was released and pressed on vinyl by the Colombian label Polen Records in partnership with Disasters By Choice.

The music of "Cumbión Planetario" develops a particular tuning system that contains pure intervals and is based on planetary tuning, specifically the frequency of an Earth day as calculated by Swiss physicist Hans Cousto. Composed with diverse synthesis techniques including the creation of digital instruments constructed by sampling Swiss soundscapes, especially bird calls; also with analog gear explored at SMEM.

“At La Becque, we worked on a new album (Cumbión Planetario), inspired by the slow-pitched Cumbia Rebajada sound of Monterrey, Mexico, and ambient music. During our residency, we explored different tuning systems and developed one that contains pure intervals and is based on planetary tuning, specifically the frequency of an earth day as calculated by Swiss physicist Hans Cousto. The superposition of beats on rhythmic cumbia bases, the use of drum machine to reinforce atypical accents of the traditional Fandango and the ornamentation of roots bases such as the Chandé by some percussion of the world defined the rythmic style of the production. The mix and master by Eblis Álvarez (Meridian Brothers, Los Pirañas) and Camilo Manchego gave Voltaje Raizal the final touch making it an immersive proposal that brings a unique sound to the tropical futurism scene.
