Parkside Primary News Week ending: Friday 18th July 2025

New school communications - Arbor

We have recently moved our school information system to Arbor, which is enabling us to streamline a number of functions and work more efficiently. This means some changes for parents and carers. Moving forward, we will no longer be sending out information via text message. This will be a huge saving to the school budget. (During the transition period you may still receive some texts while we use up our existing text bundle. Please do not reply to SMS messages sent via Arbor as they will not be seen.) Please bear with us while we adapt to this new system.

We will shortly be sending out information about the Arbor parent portal (web based) and parent app (for smartphones). This will enable you to login and view school information and receive messages. The in-app messages will be the best way for you to keep up to date, so please download the app when we send out login details. Updates will also be sent via email. The parent portal/app will also be the method to inform us of any changes to your contact information. You will also be able to book parents evening appointments.

In the future you will be able to make payments and book clubs through the Arbor app, but we will still be using ParentPay for the time being until our contract with them ends next July.

The end of another school year

As we reach the end of another school year, it is a good opportunity to look back at all that has been achieved by the children this year and to see the progress they have made. Not to mention all of the trips, performances and other fantastic learning opportunities - have a look at the photo grid below for just a small snapshot of the year. Thank you as always to all parents and carers for their support.

We hope you all have a fun and safe summer break. We look forward to seeing you all back in school on Tuesday 2nd September. Please see the map below for the new class locations.

Just a small snapshot of the busy year we have had - so many great memories!

Summer Fair

Thank you to all who were able to come along and support the The Friends of Parkside PTA Summer Fair. It was a fantastic event and brilliant fun for all, raising £780.30 for the school which is absolutely wonderful. £188 of the total was from Fat Dads United so special thanks to them for their amazing support.

A big thank you to the PTA for all of their hard work organising this event and others throughout the year. The summer discos raised an incredible £1000 approximately, and the school council will be looking at how best to spend this to benefit the school in the Autumn term. All of the fundraising makes a huge difference and we are so grateful.

In just over 18 months, the PTA has raised almost £5000 - wow!!! To carry on this amazing work they really need some more people to join them, particularly as some members will be leaving at the end of this year. "The more volunteers we have, the less work it is for everyone involved. We only usually meet once every half term (usually in Morrisons café or the Hungry Horse), so it’s not a huge commitment. And then we just need volunteers at our fundraisers. If this is something you think you can do, please reach out. We will welcome you with open arms."

Thank you also to the 'Parkside Planets' who worked to help keep the event tidy and litter free as part of their Humberside Police Lifestyle project. They also assisted the “Save Goole Hospital” team by efficiently handing out leaflets and helped spread the word of the importance of Goole Hospital, and how it’s a lifeline to many people.

Fond farewells & thank yous

We would like to say a big thank you to Miss Oldridge (Teaching Assistant), Mr Hastey, Miss Craighan and Miss Longman (from the office) who are leaving Parkside this summer. They have all been hugely valuable members of Team Parkside and we are sure you will join us in wishing them all well.

Mrs Coxon has been seconded for leadership support in another school for the Autumn term.

We sadly lost one of our former members of staff Mrs Cluckey who recently passed away. She is remembered fondly; she made such a difference to pupils at lunchtime and was such a lovely team member.

Goodbye & good luck Year 6!

It is time to give all of our Year 6 children our best wishes as they move on to the next stage of their school life - we will miss you! We hope all of the children and their families have enjoyed the performances and farewell celebrations. See below for a few pictures from their leavers trip.

We are very proud of all of the progress you have made during your time with us; you should be very proud of your achievements! The future is bright - we wish you lots of luck as you take your next steps.

Wherever your journey takes you, you will always be a part of Team Parkside!

Reception are growing!

The Reception children are incredibly proud of the vegetables they have grown. They planted the seeds in March and have been carefully tending to them and have enjoyed talking about the changes the have seen. They harvested the carrots, radish and lettuce today to enjoy as part of snack.

Can you help?

We would love to have more parent volunteers helping out in school - you can really make a difference! You could help out by supporting in class, inspiring pupils for future jobs by attending an assembly or speaking at careers day, or maybe in some other way we haven't thought of! Please get in touch by calling the office or emailing parkside.primary@eastriding.gov.uk

Transition Social Stories

A lot of children strive on routine and structure. However, routine is not always possible. Sometimes a transition or an unexpected event, no matter how big or small, occurs and changes a routine.

In these instances, a social story for transitions can be crafted to guide children through the process of adjusting to new routines or settings, using simple language and illustrations to depict the change in a positive light.

A transitions social story provides children with a structured narrative that outlines what to expect and how to behave.

Incorporating a transition social story about common upcoming transitions and unexpected events can help prepare children and reduce anxiety in changes in their regular routine. They make it easy for the child to visualise what will happen and provide suggestions on how to respond.

The end of the school year and coming back to school are anticipated changes. This allows for the creation of scenario specific social stories to help prepare children who benefit from advanced notice.

We have created two social stories that your child may benefit from:

1. End of the school year – this social story helps children understand the concept of school ending and the impending holidays. This social story should be shared at the end of term/start of the school holidays. The story should be read with the child regularly (even daily) when the child is calm and can engage with it.

2. Back to school – this social story helps children prepare for coming back to school. This social story should be shared towards the end of the school holidays in preparation for the return in September. Again, this should be shared regularly when the child is calm and able to engage with it.

Screens in summer: what’s the right balance?

Please see below for useful advice from Parentzone.org

For many parents, summer holidays mean a chaotic six-week juggling act. Working, cooking, cleaning… all while being a carer, friend and entertainer for their children.

It’s no surprise that screens can be a valuable (if not entirely guilt-free) tool to keep children occupied and entertained. But this comes with its own challenges. Parents must also ensure their child’s screen use doesn’t become unhealthy or unsafe.

So, with a lot of conflicting advice out there, what really matters when it comes to smartphones, social media and online games?

Police Impersonation Fraud - Urgent Trigger Fraud Alert #29 (July 2025)

We have an urgent Trigger Fraud Alert for you. This is taking place in our area - please share with friends and family to keep them safe.

Humberside police have advised about a tactic that is being used by fraudsters. Recently reported in the Grimsby area.

The fraudsters are portraying to be your bank or a police officer and sound legitimate, as they may know some of your personal details and invent an incident: Calling to inform you your card has been cloned.

The fraudster may tell you to hang up and call 101 or your banks real number to check they’re genuine. They may say “wait for the beep, then make the call”. This is the trick. Even if you dial a new number the scammer stays on the line without you knowing. You think you’re speaking to your bank or police but you’re still talking to the scammer.

Remember:

  • Your bank or the police will never call you to ask you to verify your personal details or PIN by phone or offer to pick up your card by courier.
  • Hang up, wait a few minutes, and then call your bank or 101 from a different telephone device and/or use a number you know to be genuine, such as the one on the back of your bank card, or by calling 159.
  • The police or your bank will not contact you out of the blue to participate in an investigation or send a courier to your home to collect bank cards, cash, or other valuable items. Any requests to do so are a scam.
  • Don’t trust Caller ID display on your phone – it’s not proof of ID.

Reporting and Support

If you have been a victim and lost money, call 101 and report it to Humberside Police. Visit fraudwatch.org.uk for more information about fraud and where to get support. You can also sign up to receive future alerts at alerts.fraudwatch.org.uk.

Spotlight on Attendance 🔦

The attendance figure for the whole school year is 94.62%. This is slightly below our target of 95%.

As we look ahead to the new school year, please see below for ways to help improve school attendance:

  • Do not take holidays in term time (see here for Penalty Notice information)
  • Make appointments outside of school hours
  • Use the "When is to ill to ill" guidance when considering keeping your child off school (click here to view)
  • Arrive on time each day. School gates open at 8.40 with registers closing at 8.55am
  • Reach out to school Via Mrs Daine or Mrs Greenley for support around school attendance including Emotional Based School Avoidance
Absence from school not only equates to lost learning but also missing out on other benefits to a child's wellbeing and wider development.

Safeguarding and Wellbeing - support over the summer

If you have any Safeguarding concerns outside of school hours, or are concerned a child has suffered or is likely to suffer significant harm and is at immediate risk call the Children’s Safeguarding Hub on (01482) 395500 or ring 999 (asking for the Police).

Summer Water Safety

Whether it’s sunny days at the beach or fun in the paddling pool, children are naturally drawn to water. But with excitement comes risk. This guide brings together 10 clear, practical tips to help parents and educators protect children around water – whether that’s at home, on school trips or on holiday.

Backed by the Royal Life Saving Society UK, the advice includes knowing what beach flags mean, avoiding inflatables in open water, and learning to ‘float and call’ in an emergency. With a focus on prevention and supervision, this guide is a must-read for summer safety and beyond.
