July 15, 2024... Surrounding a lively Italian inspired atrium courtyard in a historic building from 1899, Hotel Bella Grande is a timeless yet contemporary hotel where nostalgic charm meets modern sophistication in the heart of Copenhagen, just a few steps from the City Hall Square.
Opened in April 2024 with a sense of luxury and comfort, guests are welcomed in completely renovated rooms and suites designed to offer travelers a calm retreat in the middle of Copenhagen. The hotel features 109 rooms and suites, festive Italian restaurant Donna, a gym and bike rental, along with meeting and conference facilities.
Responsible for the new design of Hotel Bella Grande are Malene Bech-Pedersen and Mette Bonavent of Tonen Agency. "For the interior of Hotel Bella Grande we had two important points. First, to create a design hotel that is a true treat to the eye, and second to highlight the historic and very classic architecture of the building," says Malene. "We drew Inspiration from a trip to Italy, where we were impressed by a Venetian palazzo with an open-air central courtyard and peach-colored walls,” says Mette.
Constructed in 1899, the five-story building retains many characterful features but needed refurbishment to maximize its potential and raise it up to modern standards. Tonen aimed to create interiors for the 109-rooms that are timeless yet contemporary and combine a sense of nostalgic charm with modern sophistication. The interior design plays with a nostalgia that is utterly elegant, but also unexpected. The ground floor areas – reception, lounge, restaurant, atrium yard, bar and gym – are richly layered spaces that work as a dialogue between the past and the present, and a rich mix of colors that are somehow vintage and contemporary at the same time. Carpets and textiles in bold colors and patterns, mirrors and flowers everywhere.
ROOMS & SUITES
The guest rooms are situated on five floors and range in size and style. The hotel offers two suites with terraces, a few offer connecting rooms, others have an interior atrium courtyard or street view, others offer perfect options ranging from solo travelers to families. Rooms are decorated in a toned-down style with cream white, burgundy and gold colors with some chrome 80’s references, but you will often find pops of red accents in red marble or tile. Imagine lots of round/organic shapes and dressing tables instead of desks – that create a little sense of old glamour.
Tonen was involved in every detail of the hotel's interior fit-out, sourcing vintage objects and artworks to sit alongside contemporary pieces including furniture from &Tradition, bedside lamps by Tom Dixon, side tables from Polspotten and bespoke vanities made by Københavns Møbelsnedkeri. The idea was to give the hotel's rooms and suites a calming atmosphere through using muted colors and sophisticated details, such as the coordinated upholstered armchairs and fabric lampshades from Danish brand Oi Soi Oi.

DONNA
At the foot of Bella Grande you’ll find the lively and vibrant Italian restaurant Donna. The restaurant brings the essence of Italy to the heart of Copenhagen, inviting guests to indulge in cherished flavors and generous portions. With a vibrant and colorful interior, Donna is all about creating a festive atmosphere that extends from the dining rooms to the atrium courtyard.
The dining room's dark red ceiling is complemented by blood-red couches and pink curtains that were designed to create an atmosphere of romance, but have a touch of mystery for the space to take on a fun nightclub vibe later in the evenings. A laid-back cocktail lounge provides a cozy spot for pre-dinner drinks or late-night conversations.
Bella Grande is located at Vester Voldgade 23, situated in the old town of Copenhagen where nearly every attraction is easily accessible by foot and public transportation is right outside your doorstep.
