your pirateid (username) and password
PirateID (Username) and Password — All new staff, faculty, and students are assigned a unique PirateID to access resources like PiratePort, Microsoft 365, Webex, and more. Follow these steps to get started:
- activate your PirateID (Username)
- create a secure password (ex. Md$habJ1)
- enable multifactor authentication for greater protection
Note: UNC system standards require that institutions implement multifactor authentication to protect sensitive information (Level 3/Level 4).
ecu id
ECU ID — a numerical identifier different from your PirateID. The ECU ID identifies you in Human Resources systems and begins with a “B.” Find your ECU ID in PiratePort.
WAYS TO GET CONNECTED
Eduroam — ECU’s primary wireless network. Onboard (register) a device once, and you have wireless access for four years on ECU's campus as well as wherever Eduroam is available.
Virtual Private Network (VPN) — An encrypted virtual "tunnel" between off-campus devices and on-campus information. A few services are only available through the VPN, such as Piratedrive, tools.ecu.edu, and administrative systems like Banner. Login link: remoteaccess.ecu.edu.
Teleworking — Working from a remote location presents unique challenges. Visit the ITCS Knowledge Base to read suggestions and tips for working with your home WiFi.
ECU Email — Outlook is the recommended email management client for Mac, PC, and mobile devices. Outlook is installed on university-owned computers. Microsoft Exchange Online Protection's spam filter screens and quarantines suspicious email before it reaches your inbox.
Announce Listserv — Stay informed of the latest ECU events, announcements, and news by joining the Announce listserv (entire campus) and specific Health Sciences lists.
CONFERENCING
Microsoft Teams — Provides a chat-centered work space to bring conversations, project files, and collaborative tools into a single interface for instant and organized access.
WebEx — A suite of online meeting tools that allow you to meet with participants inside and outside of ECU using your computer and/or telephone. Hosts can manage participants, lock the meeting to prevent additional attendees, and record the session.
THE MOST POPULAR SOFTWARE PRODUCTS AT ECU
Microsoft Office — Access your Microsoft 365 subscription through pirate365.ecu.edu and click the app launcher (hamburger icon) in the upper left to open all available apps. Mobile versions available for most.
Your subscription includes five downloads of Microsoft Office (full version) for your personal computers, both Mac and Windows. The installs are active until you retire or leave ECU. Connect to the internet at least once every 30 days to verify your subscription. Log in to pirate365.ecu.edu to access the download link - "Install and more" - in the far right corner on the home page.
Statistical Software — Mathematica, SAS, SPSS, and more are available to faculty, staff, and students. Two survey tools include Qualtrics and REDCap.
Adobe Creative Cloud — A suite of desktop and mobile applications used for graphic design, video/photography editing, web development, and more.
DO-IT-YOURSELF TOOLS AND SERVICES
WordPress — Official Content Management System (CMS) of ECU used to create and manage websites.
MyWeb — Self-service portal where ECU faculty, staff, and students can create their own academic website.
go.ecu.edu URL shortener — ECU's internal URL shortening service that allows customization of long URLs to a more user-friendly format for print, web, or social media purposes.
Siteimprove Web Tool — Receive monthly reports that detect broken links, misspellings, and accessibility issues.

University Data Governance — ECU's data governance practices and policies address key issues such as data ownership, standardization, validity, reliability, access, and security.
ECU Technology Requirements and Guidelines — Follow official ECU policies, rules and regulations as well as ITCS guidelines and requirements to ensure compliance with university, local, state and federal rules and laws.
IT Compliance Guide—These informative articles, websites and official policies help ensure compliance with university policies and local, state and federal laws for information technology.
Protecting Sensitive Data — ECU users are responsible for the protection of any sensitive data in their custody. This includes electronic, print, voice, or any other form in which the data is captured. Some examples of sensitive information include: social security numbers (SSN), credit/debit card numbers, and driver's license numbers. Do not download sensitive data from ECU administrative systems to a desktop, laptop, web server, smartphone, tablet, or other device unless absolutely required, prior approval is obtained, physical security controls are active on the device, and mobile device encryption is in place.
STORAGE OPTIONS AND GUIDELINES
OneDrive Cloud Storage (recommended) — 5TB capacity and the only approved cloud storage solution for ECU. Approved for all file types, including sensitive information like HIPAA and FERPA.
Piratedrive — Network-attached storage (NAS). Approved for all file types, including sensitive information. Mapped as the “U” drive on your computer when on campus; accessible through the VPN when off campus.

TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES AT NO COST
LinkedIn Learning — Educational video platform taught by industry experts in software, creative and business skills. ECU provides all users with an account.
SAS Training Discounts Program — ECU faculty, staff and students are eligible for selected SAS courses at no cost. Choose from a curriculum of 100+ SAS, JMP and statistical courses offered in the traditional classroom setting, Live Web classroom, or Self-Paced e-Learning.
Project Management Certification —This curriculum has been selected by the ITCS Project Management Office (PMO) to certify participants on the skills of project management and scrum. Courses include "Project Management Simplified" and "Scrum: The Basics." Register in Cornerstone.

Panopto — Offers lecture recording, screencasting, video streaming and video content management.
Campus Classrooms and Conference Spaces — HyFlex classrooms are available with advanced technologies. Standard classrooms and conference spaces offer a variety of presentation and audiovisual features.
