Preparing for What’s Next: Our Scholars Featured on NBC News

This April, our scholars will take part in an unforgettable experience—but the journey has already begun. NBC News recently visited our school to capture the story behind an upcoming four-day, seven-HBCU college tour, hosted by United Charter High School Central Office and bringing together students from across the United Charter network.

CEO, Dr. Palmore helping prepare our scholar, Victor, for his interview.

Nearly 50 sophomores and juniors from the Bronx, Brooklyn, and Queens—most of whom are AMS IV scholars—have been selected to participate in this inaugural experience. Spearheaded by Dr. Sanya Hudson, United Charter’s Manager of Development, this initiative is intentionally designed to expand access, exposure, and opportunity for students across the network. In preparation for the trip, scholars have committed to six interactive workshops focused on equipping them academically, mentally, and personally for what lies ahead. These sessions focus on building a college-ready mindset, developing life skills, and grounding students in history, identity, and purpose. Scholars have explored topics such as goal-setting, mental health strategies, leadership, and cultural legacy—all while learning what it truly means to write their own story.

The upcoming April tour will include visits to seven Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) along the East Coast, as well as a powerful eighth stop at the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture. Each stop is designed to expand perspective, deepen aspiration, and help students envision themselves thriving in higher education. We are incredibly proud of our scholars for the commitment they’ve shown during the preparation process—and grateful to our UCHS Network and NBC News for highlighting the intentional work happening behind the scenes.
