Flavia Salima Marcano, then 10, was sad and excited for the surprise vacation her parents planned. She didn’t like leaving her family and friends in Venezuela, but she looked forward to visiting her cousins and aunt who lived in the United States.
What Salima Marcano didn’t know was that the “vacation” was permanent — and that her family was about to leave everything they knew behind. Daniela and Frank Salima were scared to tell their two young children the truth.

‘In the Heights’ amplifies cultural pride
As the cast of “In the Heights” waved each of the flags mentioned in “Carnaval del Barrio,” the crowd cheered along for the flag that represented their culture. That scene is a moment I will never forget. As members of the cast held up the Mexican flag during the song, my sister and I proudly joined the raucous applause.

Courtney Daniel sat in third place at the 2023 Region Meet with one throw left. She needed to throw a personal record to qualify in the shot put for the UIL State Championships as a sophomore.
Everything Courtney had worked for was one throw away. Her older sister Kendall knew the pressure mounting.
