It's a wrap!

What a spectacular year this has been! We wanted to put out one last newsletter to capture the celebrations of the past two weeks. On May 24, the juniors met with their mentors for the last time after an enriching seven-month relationship. On May 21 and May 24, the seniors presented their Biomanufacturing capstone project to the staff and younger cohorts. And on the evening of June 5, we held a special graduation ceremony for our seniors at Carlmont's Performing Arts Center. Our hearts are filled with pride! We are also so grateful to the students, the families, and the volunteers who are the fabric of this incredible community.

Thank you, Mentors!

Every year, each of our eleventh-grade students is matched with a professional whose career interests them. They build a special relationship over six months and students even shadow them at work one day. Mentors give feedback on students' resumes, help them set goals, and might even go out for coffee or a walk to catch up. We can't thank our mentors enough. They have dedicated a great deal of their time and expertise to making a difference in our students' lives. We are also grateful to our mentor coordinator, Mr. Fabic for finding these fabulous volunteers. Below is a list of the mentors, photos from our end-of-the-year breakfast, and job shadows.

Photos from the Juniors' Job-Shadow Experiences

We couldn't have been more thrilled to have alum, Kate Carlos and Nathan Bish, Class of 2023, pay a visit at the mentor breakfast!

Kate is studying Chemistry at UC Santa Cruz and has been interning at Sutro Biopharma, Inc.

Nathan is triple majoring in Physiology, Political Science, and International Affairs at the University of Colorado Boulder.

Both report being far ahead of their peers in their college lab classes thanks to the advanced skills they gained through BTI.

Seniors' Capstone Projects for Biomanufacturing

Last month, BTI seniors presented their capstone Biomanufacturing projects to the tenth and eleventh-grade students and staff. We were all so impressed! Congratulations, graduates, and congratulations, Ms. Burndon who was at the helm of C.A.R.L. (Carlmont Advanced Research Laboratories)!

Graduation Ceremony for the BTI Class of 2024

Congratulations to Daniel and Sam who were selected by the staff to speak at BTI graduation! These two have been dazzling us with dynamic presentations for the past three years. At graduation, we got to see their flair for comedy. We laughed and also got teary as they recounted our collective experiences.

Congratulations to Xavier for being the recipient of the $1500 BTI Alumni Scholarship Award! We are so proud of you, Xavier!

This scholarship celebrates a student who has the unique ability to see the potential at the intersection of science and the humanities. Xavier has proven to be a shining example of the power of interdisciplinary thinking.

Thank you, Ms. Abdilla for creating this slideshow of memories for graduation!

It is always a great compliment when students encourage their younger siblings to apply to the program. Thank you to the parents who had the great idea to capture these two pairs of siblings. Next year, we'll add to the collection!

Andrew (far left), BTI graduate from the Class of '20 just graduated from the University of Arizona and is headed to Stanford this fall to pursue his Ph.D. in Physics—more specifically optics and quantum information sensing. Next to him is his brother, Aidan, Class of '24, who is off to the University of Arizona to study Biomedical Engineering.

Alex (second from right), Class of '24, is off to UC Davis to study Biological Systems Engineering. His sister, Emily (far right), Class of '20, has just graduated from Davis and will stay on there this fall to pursue her Ph.D., also in Biological Systems Engineering.
