Reading Girls' School newsletter - 19 decEMber 2023

Principal's message:

There has been a great deal of festive fervour in school over the last two weeks. Last Thursday we had our Christmas lunch and jumper day. Students were invited to wear their festive jumpers to school and donate £1 to the charity Save the Children. Thank you to all of the students and families who donated. Some students wore their festive jumpers over their PE kits as Year 8 and 10 had their House bench ball. The competitions were just that, competitive, as forms battled it out for positions and valuable House Points.

The canteen was decorated with Christmas decorations and the canteen staff and members of staff dressed up in festive outfits. As the songs played students came together for their Christmas lunch. Entertainment was provided by the student SSLT team, with football on the Muga and karaoke in the main hall lead by staff. Spirits were high as a cross year conga broke out, led by Year 11s, and other students joined in and made their way around the playground.

The celebrations didn't finish there. In the evening there was a sold-out Christmas Concert. The event included musical and dance performances by the students, which were a huge success. The parents who attended can vouch for all the singing and dancing talent that we enjoyed. I can't be prouder to see our girls perform with such confidence. They definitely brought a great deal of joy to this festive season. I wish to thank Mr Jones, Ms Small and Mr Fazio for their hard work and commitment to the girls that performed, and for making the evening such a great success.

Monday brought the judging of the Form Christmas Doors, and today finished off with a festive quiz in form time.

This term has also been packed with lots of extra-curricular activities. We have had, in addition to bench ball, a number of House events from the Autumn Photography competition, to Black History Month poster competition. The House system has brought a great deal of opportunities for students to participate in a wide range of opportunities beyond their academic studies.

These wider opportunities have extended to University of Reading visits, as well as students being involved with the Rabble Theatre, which has commenced their club again this year at RGS. Students have also started to prepare for the annual Magistrates Court Mock Trial Competition, which will take place next term across Reading. Our Year 11s have been involved in apprenticeship workshops, as well as attended our annual Further Education Fair. These are just a few of the activities that have taken place this term, on top of all the learning that goes on in the classroom.

I wish to thank all the staff for the commitment they continue to show to the girls in making sure that they flourish and meet their full potential. Well done, of course, to all the students who are so diligent in their studies, and also who are so enthusiastic about being involved with all of these opportunities. It definitely has been an eventful and purposeful term.

Thank you for your constant support. I wish you all a very peaceful festive holiday.
