Welcome to the May 2025 newsletter from Lydon Contracting Ltd. We're proud of the work we do and want to share our latest news, useful information and staff updates.
Power of the sun
During May works have progressed well at our major renewable energy project in Norwich. Works include the installation of 4no. 33kV circuits that will connect a new BESS facility and Solar farm to the main National Grid substation near Norwich.
Over the past 9 weeks we have installed the HV and fibre ducting along a 1.4km stretch of the A140 and 0.5km across agricultural land.
Ensuring works are carried out safely is of paramount importance. Daily briefings have been carried out to all operatives at the main compound (to brief the daily activities) before the work teams head to their work zone for a specific site briefing.
Given the location of works being on the A140 carriageway, managing traffic and reducing any impact on the public has been a primary focus. With 2-3 manned operatives managing the traffic each day, this has ensured traffic build up has been kept to a minimum.
Looking ahead, from June we will be moving into Brick Kiln Lane under a full road closure where we will complete the duct installation to the Solar farm site.
All aboard!
Work has commenced at another bus depot, this time in Potters Bar for the installation of ducting and plinths for the new supply of electric and comms cables that will feed the EV chargers and lighting columns for the fleet of electric buses.
Alongside the enabling works for the EV chargers we will also be removing the existing kerb line of bushes/brash along the southern boundary of site and constructing a new pedestrian footway, making good the concrete yard area to new kerb line and installing Armco barriers & bollards throughout. The works are programmed for 20 weeks.
Green energy
This month saw the off-site 33kV cable installation and jointing succesfully completed for the new solar farm at Tolldish Hall, near Coventry. Works have now commenced on-site with the new compound area completed and the construction of the DNO substation well under way.
Once complete, Tolldish Hall solar farm will be able to generate 25MW of electricity, enough to power 7,091 homes.
On the National Express
This month saw the disconnection and decommission of the existing 11kV supply and commissioning of the new 11kV supply to the National Express Perry Barr site.
The old substation base has been broken out and reinstated.
The final landscaping and Armco protection has been installed around the new substation ready for handover.
Investing in quality equipment
In May we took delivery of our New DAF LF290 Tarmac hotbox lorry with a Marvtech tarmac hotbox. This is replacing our current hotbox that has served us well keeping up with our own re-instatement works throughout or projects over the last 4-5 years.
The new Marvtech box boasts a much better fuel efficiency than its predecessor with a new fan assisted heat source unit that will save on the amount of propane used to power and heat the box, when required
Running for the National Autistic Society
One of our most long-standing operatives is undertaking charity work next month in aid of the National Autistic Society which he holds close to his heart. Ty is taking part in the 60 Mile challenge during June in aid of the National Autistic Society.
Talking to Ty about the challenge of the charity run and his son Ty explained:
“The National Autistic Society does incredible work supporting families like mine. They provide vital resources, guidance, and services that help autistic people live fuller, more understood lives. They campaign for better education, improved services, and a more inclusive society”.
“As you can see this run is about more than just distance, it’s about awareness, acceptance, and love. My son will be in my heart every step of the way”.
