Alcohol and Dementia

It is well-documented that alcohol consumption in excess has negative effects on brain health, including poor memory, brain shrinkage, and dementia. Alcohol may also interact with other health problems, as well with medication.

United Kingdom National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) recommends reducing alcohol consumption as much as possible to minimize the health risks.

According to Canada’s Guidance on Alcohol and Health, safer drinking tips are:

  • Drink slowly. Have no more than 2 drinks in any 3 hours.
  • For every drink of alcohol, have one non-alcoholic drink.
  • Eat before and while you are drinking
  • Always consider your age, body weight and health problems that might suggest lower limits.
