Portico Academy Trust Newsletter
July 2025
Message from the CEO
Dear Parent/Carers,
Our five schools of Portico Academy Trust have been working together for eight years, going into our ninth year in September.
In that time we have built a strong trust in financial terms, but more importantly in our learning and teaching. Close collaboration and shared training for our staff has resulted in highly skilled adults in our classrooms, providing excellent teaching and care for our pupils, your children.
Our schools have supported each other, be it Porters Grange swimming at West Leigh or the chef at Porters supporting the team at Friars for our February conference.
As you will see from the items in this newsletter the children across the trust have worked and played together in a range of activities.
We are very proud to be part of Portico – within Southend City we remain the only trust dedicated to primary age children. The children will always be at the heart of every decision we make.
Thank you for your support and we wish you an enjoyable and happy summer break.
Yours sincerely
Mrs C Woolf
Message from Chair of Trust
As we come to the end of another successful academic year across Portico Academy Trust, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our parents and carers for your continued support for our schools. This year has once again highlighted the strength of our school communities, the dedication of our staff, and the resilience and enthusiasm of our pupils. It has been a pleasure to witness the many achievements, both academic and personal, that have taken place across our Trust schools. I send my very best wishes to our year 6 leavers moving to the next stage in their educational journey.
Karen Packer
Our Vision
Through working closely together and sharing best practice, initiatives and expertise, we want all of our children to be confident and successful lifelong learners.
As a Trust we believe it essential that all our children acquire the key skills they need to secure the fundamental building blocks in order to learn. By doing this they can develop a love of learning and become enthusiastic, independent, inquisitive, risk-taking learners.
Our Values
- We want the best learning experience for every child, every day.
- We recognise that learning is the key to every child’s future.
- We meet challenges head on and find creative solutions.
- We treat all members of our school community and our environment with respect.
Hamstel Swimming Pool
Portico Trust was very reluctant to close the pool at Hamstel, but unfortunately it was in a very poor state of repair, with a plant room and equipment that were far from effective and safe working. There was also a long-term leak somewhere under the pool. The costs of upgrading it were nearing the £500,000 mark which the Trust could not afford, particularly after the expenditure in the junior kitchen area to give the children a proper eating area with toilets and facilities.
We tried to raise funding from Sport England and the Lottery etc but none was forthcoming. We went to our local MP and councillors, but still no help.
We thank the PA for trying to raise money and wish them continued success.
We will keep trying as it is our wish to have the pool open. In the meantime, Mrs Farrell and Mr Roche are ensuring that swimming happens for the children.
Friars Primary School and Nursery
2024-25 has been such a great year! From our start in September to our finish in July, it has been packed full of busyness and lots of fun.
We had a strong feeling that we would see Ofsted this year and therefore it was no surprise when they visited us in December, in the penultimate week before the Christmas break. Whilst we would not have chosen that particular time of the year, the festive spirit and the many enriching activities taking place really helped the school to shine brightly. The inspector joined in with the fun, attending a nativity performance and our Christmas dinner. She loved what she saw in the school and said many lovely things both across the two days and in her report. It was a time to celebrate for the whole Friars’ Family. In the written report we were asked to continue our work to improve handwriting and pupils’ attendance. It was acknowledged that we were already doing all we could to encourage children into school and our excellent work with parents in regard to this was recognised. We will continue this focus in 2025-26.
Whilst we always strive to have an excellent curriculum offer and high-quality teaching for all of the children in every phase, we also look to enable a variety of wider enrichment opportunities. Every year group had at least one exciting educational visit this year and we had plenty of visitors come to us too. Local religious figures, the Music Man Project, Father Christmas and Pudsey were just a few of the people who walked through our doors. Each year we have two residential trips for children in Year 5 and Year 6. Year 5 spend two nights camping at the Thriftwood Scout Camp near Brentwood, whilst Year 6 go further afield… this year that being the Peak District. After a successful stay there back in 2022, we returned to Ilam Hall nestled near to Dovedale. We enjoyed an amazing five days which included long walks up the hills of Thorpe Cloud and Mam Tor, a tour of the Treak Cliff Caverns, cycling on the Tissington Trail, the history of Chatsworth House and an action-packed, thrilling day at Alton Towers.
We also like to see the children perform and compete. This year saw us participate in even more sports competitions and, once again, our school choir performed on the biggest stages in Southend: the Palace Theatre and the Cliffs Pavilion. We also took part in an inaugural public speaking competition at Thorpe Hall School. Needless to say, the children love and gain so much from all of these activities.
We tried something new this year... a pop-up swimming pool on the school playground. We believe it is important that children learn to swim as it is such a key life skill but without a swimming pool in close proximity it does make things tricky. For four weeks, we had our very own swimming pool just outside Year 6, and this meant that every year group from Year 1 to 6 had a crash-course of daily swimming lessons. The instructors were excellent and the lessons were of good quality, so much so that we would like to have the pool back in 2026-27.
As a school we are committed to involving parents in school life as much as possible as we know the positive difference it makes. This year there were many occasions that brought parents – and other family members – into school. These included grandparents talking to Year 2 about the games and toys they used to play with when they were young, special assemblies, Christmas decoration workshops, sports days and picnics, stay and play sessions in Early Years, Christmas and Summer Fayres… the list could go on, and on…
Our children remain the very best thing about our school. The Year 6 children are heading off to their new secondary schools with great results in their end of year tests and assessments. Our school Key Stage 2 performance for 2025 was above national averages which is testament to everyone’s hard work; children, staff and parents. We’re already looking ahead to 2025-26 with enthusiasm.
Here's to a lovely summer break and another exciting year ahead.
Hamstel Infant School & Nursery
The year started brilliantly with all our children returning to school eagerly and enthusiastically to begin their learning and our reception year settling quickly into school life.
Across the year we were able to give the children many great learning opportunities including walks of the local area, Multicultural Week, World Black History Day, World Mental Health Day, Harvest Festival, Antibullying Week, Road Safety Week, Children in Need Day, Odd Socks Day, Easter Bunny Hop parties, Comic Relief Day, Women’s World History Day, Children’s Mental Health Week, The Big Bird Watch, Superhero Day and World Poetry Day.
We had several special visiting assemblies around summer safety, the NSPCC Speak Out Stay Safe Initiative and the Southend Clean Air Project of which we have been a part this year. We also welcomed special visitors into school - the Nite Owls, to share hands on experiences and information about their wonderful birds, our always intriguing storyteller visits, and our whole school science day, which was as popular (and as crazy) as last year. We have trained Year 2 children in mini first aid and all the children across the school had the opportunity to have some hands-on experiences with some familiar farmyard friends as the wonderful Gemma’s Farm made our outdoor learning garden their home for two days in July.
Christmas is always a big affair at Hamstel Infants and Year 1 got to celebrate in style with a Christmas crafts event with their parents, while our children from Nursery to Year 2 also took to the stage with typical Hamstel Infants gusto to wow their parents, carers, family and friends in their Nativity and Christingle performances. We also had a visit from a ballet company who performed an enchanting show for the children titled ‘A Christmas Wish’. Seeing the children’s faces lit up with awe and wonder, made this event so worthwhile as part of our bid to develop new and different opportunities for our children.
There were also lots of opportunities for parents to come into school across the year as we held workshops around Healthy Schools, reading, phonics, handwriting, maths and year group curriculum as well as the Reception classes afternoon tea and the lovely nursery teddy bears picnic at the end of the year.
We hosted the superb Portico Art and DT festival showcasing the creative skills of the children across the Trust, which tied in brilliantly with our art related projects for Waddle-on-Sea and our ‘We are Artists’ day this term.
PE remained high on our agenda and Team Hamstel didn’t let us down. In September, we had a pop-up swimming pool in school for the first part of the autumn term, which gave the children that vital first introduction to water safety and the crucial life skill of learning to swim. It was amazing to see the progress made in just a few weeks of swimming.
Our dance team performed their ‘Friend in Me’ routine brilliantly at the Infant Dance festival while Team Hamstel continued to give their all at the mini games, the Portico Academy sports event (featuring all five schools), Tag Rugby competition, 3 tees cricket, dodgeball and the inter-school cross country, where we performed brilliantly, coming third overall. We then managed to bring home the gold medals in the local Panathlon event, before following this up by attending the Quad Kids event where as defending champions, we took gold again! The final action of the sporting calendar saw Team Hamstel head off to the Borough Sports where we were extremely proud to achieve third place overall.
The summer term saw two fabulous performances …the first being the postponed Year 1 Spring show, entitled ‘Hats Off’ and the second, our Year 2 Leavers ‘Eddie the Penguin Saves the World Show’. Both performances showed off the children’s considerable talents on stage and received lovely comments from the audiences.
All in all, a very successful year both academically and enrichment wise. In terms of our happy children and we are all really looking forward to the next year and everything it brings at Hamstel Infants!
Hamstel Junior School
Hamstel Junior School had another exciting and successful year.
Our Year 3 classes started their journey with us with an exciting Stone Age theme day, moving into the Ancient Egyptians and learning to be archaeologists. They performed their first Christmas concert in the Juniors and visited Barleylands. In Year 4 the whole year group took part in Bikeability, Roman Day, performed their production of A Hysterical Historical Adventure and had a wonderful visit to Old Leigh on the train. Year 5 enjoyed Greek Day, secondary school WOW day at King Edmund School, their Christmas production and the Skreens Park residential in Chelmsford. And finally Year 6 enjoyed a visit to Duxford, World War Two Day, the Christmas Carol Concert at Holy Trinity Church, a music workshop with a professional musician and composer, an expression and delivery workshop as well as the Year 6 residential and adventure week.
The whole school have had a range of visitors throughout the year but new this year was working with the Clean Air Team from Southend Council, and a retired three-legged police dog called Blu to inspire us all around our Hamstel Habits of courage and determination!
We have continued to use our fantastic school facilities including cooking in our kitchen and having a go at our new orienteering course. We were also lucky to have a sensory Cubbie, which the local authority asked us to trial, enabling many children support with their sensory needs.
We have continued to raise money for good causes. Much of the fundraising has been organised by the school council this year and the money raised went towards the cost of our own Waddle-on-Sea penguin.
The school choir continued to represent the school in the two big choir events across the city, and the local elderly residential home. Due to our work in increasing opportunities to learn and play music across the school, the school applied to be a lead school for music in Southend – a bid in which they were successful. The work to support other schools will start next year.
The school achieved its best ever results in Group Two Borough Sports as the school placed first in the group. We now move into Group One which is a huge achievement. We also participated in the debating competition for the first time. We came second place overall and first for the best chairperson!
It been a busy year with so many great opportunities and experiences for all our children.
Porters Grange Primary School & Nursery
Once again, our school has been buzzing with activity, learning, laughter and community spirit. From the classroom to the playground, from bake sales to discos – every corner of our school has had a story to tell.
Our School Council has been unstoppable this year, championing student wellbeing and leading the charge on several exciting initiatives. They brought the school together for Comic Relief with a delicious bake sale and helped raise funds for Children in Need with a colourful non-uniform day. And, in a bold move not seen for years, they organised an all-school disco! Children from Reception to Year 6 danced, played and won prizes under the lights, with the DJ turning up the energy.
They’ve also had their voices heard in important ways – meeting with Chef David to sample and suggest dishes that made it onto our school menu and consulting with Mrs Britten on outdoor play improvements and Mrs Bolter to shape a magical World Book Day.
And what a World Book Day it was! Pyjamas were the dress code as families joined us on the Thursday afternoon to explore a world of books. Every classroom buzzed with book-themed crafts, storytelling from our teachers, and excitement as children spent their WBD vouchers at the pop-up bookshop from Jacqson Diego.
Our outdoor play has entered a new era thanks to Mrs Britten’s vision and a generous grant from the RHS. We’re thrilled to be rewilding an area of the school grounds, growing a grove of trees, building our own Hobbit Hut, and adding exciting features like a crawl tunnel and a fire pit. It’s a space that will continue to grow and inspire – watch this space!
Musically, our students have shone on stage and in the community. The junior choir raised the roof at the Cliffs Pavilion and Palace Theatre as part of Southend’s musical celebrations, while our infant musicians delighted audiences at the Infant Music Festival. At Christmas, we joined All Saints Church for a beautiful carol service that warmed hearts.
Sport has been another huge highlight. Our teams gave it their all across a wide range of events – from dodgeball to bowling to archery and more. With pride, determination, and great sportsmanship, they showed us the true spirit of competition. This year’s Sports Afternoons were blessed with sunshine, and thanks to the hard work of Mr Sesniack, everything ran without a hitch. We’re already excited for next year’s return to Southchurch Park. A special shout-out to IndiRock, who brought the thrill of climbing to Year 6, both on-site and before Christmas!
We’ve also been lucky to welcome a variety of special guests to our assemblies – from authors to faith leaders – all helping us to grow our cultural awareness and spark new ideas. Our children have taken their learning beyond the classroom too, with trips around the local area and even into London. A particular highlight? Year 6’s adventurous residential at Stubbers Adventure Centre, made more accessible thanks to a generous subsidy from the Henry Smith Foundation.
All in all, it’s been a joyful, action-packed, and memorable year at Porters Grange. We’re so proud of everything our children and staff have achieved – and we can’t wait to do it all again (and more!) when we return in September.
West Leigh Junior School
As we come to the end of another busy, packed and exciting year at West Leigh, we reflect on all the wonderful activities and opportunities that have been offered to our pupils.
Our three residential trips to Danbury, Mersea and Ilam Hall (as well as activities for the children unable to attend) allowed the children to strengthen their friendships, develop their communication skills and build their independence. Facing new challenges helped them to grow more resilient, and they were all extremely proud of their achievements.
A new set of core values was introduced to the school this year. We thought carefully as a team about which values would most benefit our pupils, and decided upon integrity, responsibility and empathy. Throughout the year we developed the children’s understanding of these ‘Golden Values’ in a number of ways. Assemblies were planned carefully to allow us to explore these in depth; the children greatly impressed our trustees when explaining the meaning of each Golden Value. We also adapted our ‘Little Golden Thank Yous’ so that children can nominate children who display the values, and MDAs are able to give special golden value stickers when they see the values in action on the playground. Team Challenges have focused on the values – children enjoyed working within their house teams to create Golden Value posters and creatively ‘dual code’ each value. We will continue building on the success of these Golden Values next year.
It has been another exciting and successful year for sport at West Leigh, with 243 children proudly representing the school in various competitions and 364 taking part in sports clubs and trials. Our teams achieved outstanding results across a range of disciplines. We finished third overall in the Southend Borough Sports and were crowned cross country champions for the third consecutive year. Impressively, seven out of our eight cross country teams qualified for the Essex Finals. The Aquathlon team triumphed as Southend champions, while our Tag Rugby team secured second place in Essex. Additionally, our football team made it all the way to the Essex Cup finals, showcasing the talent and dedication of our young athletes.
The school council visited Parliament for the second year in a row, and greatly impressed our local MP with their knowledge of politics! They were instrumental in making change happen across our school and we have adopted some of their many sensible suggestions, such as a special lunch, hooks on the back of toilet doors and some new activities on our playground.
As part of our Careers Day, we were all treated to an assembly with Georgia-Mae Fenton, an Olympic gymnast. She is a member of both the British National Gymnastics Team and the England Commonwealth Games Gymnastics Squad. She inspired us all with her story of resilience and perseverance, which has led her to where she is today. Members of our local community came to share their careers throughout the day. These included a visit from the Hadleigh Farm Community Co-ordinator and our local MP. We were fortunate to have many parents visit and share insights about their diverse professions. From doctors and engineers to artists and entrepreneurs, each parent brought a unique perspective, offering a glimpse into various career paths. Their engaging presentations and personal stories not only broadened the children’s understanding of different industries but also inspired them to think about our own future aspirations.
As always, we made the most of our local area to enrich the children’s learning through a variety of educational visits. Field studies were carried out in Leigh-on-Sea and Southend, with Year 6 even having the opportunity to step inside the council chamber to learn about upcoming positive changes in the community. Year 5 deepened their understanding of volcanoes and earthquakes with a visit to the Natural History Museum, while Year 6 consolidated their World War II studies at Duxford Air Museum. Year 4 explored Roman history during their trip to Colchester Castle, and Year 3 discovered Stone Age farming techniques during an engaging visit to Barleylands. These experiences brought classroom learning to life and sparked curiosity across all year groups.
Our Maths and Quiz Club teams soared to incredible heights this year, earning a place in the prestigious national finals held at Oxford University. Competing against some of the brightest young minds in the country, they tackled exceptionally tough questions with determination and flair. We couldn’t be prouder of how confidently and brilliantly they represented West Leigh—what an unforgettable achievement!
Our choirs have continued to dazzle this year, lighting up stages with their talent and enthusiasm. From the iconic O2 Arena to local favourites like the Cliffs Pavilion and the Palace Theatre, their performances have been nothing short of inspiring. A special highlight was the boys’ choir singing at the Royal Albert Hall and alongside the incredible Music Man Project.
Finally, we are all looking forward to locating our penguin ‘Golden Leigh’ as part of the Waddle on Sea trail this summer. Two children in Year 5 were selected as winners of the design competition, and their designs were incorporated onto our own penguin chick. Most able artists across the school helped to paint the designs, and the finished result is amazing.
It has been a fantastic year, filled with exciting opportunities and memorable moments for everyone. We can’t wait to see what the year ahead has in store!
Community Links
Friars Primary School & Nursery - At Friars, we place a strong emphasis on our partnership with the local community, including our parent community. We have many regular visits into the local area, as well as having a great number of visitors who come into school to join us. Every year, we build on this to further enrich our children’s experiences. This year we have had various musicians, religious figures, charity workers and businesses in school. Our annual Careers Week sees many people from different walks of life visit the children and for 2024-25 this expanded even further with an incredibly full timetable. Every year group from Nursery to Year 6 had careers visitors which was just fantastic! Our Parent Teacher Association works tirelessly for the good of the school and they organise many fantastic events including Christmas and Summer Fayres. The fayres attract visitors from outside our immediate school community which is lovely. We continue to work with the Greggs Foundation and other organisations, such as the Salvation Army, to support families who might need help.
Hamstel Infant School & Nursery - At Hamstel Infant School we place great importance on building strong connections with our local community. Our children regularly take part in activities and visits that help them learn about and appreciate the area in which they live. This year, every class enjoyed a visit to the local Southchurch Library, where they explored books and developed a love of reading. We also arranged tours of three of our local churches, giving the children a chance to learn about different places of worship and their role in our community.
A highlight of the year was our wonderful day at the beach, where each class took part in cross-curricular, beach-themed learning. This hands-on experience not only encouraged curiosity and teamwork but also provided a memorable way to link subjects such as science, art, and geography into our enrichment work. Our Remembrance service this year, was led by some of our Year 2 children, who did a brilliant job reading poems and sharing the important history and community role played by our school during wartime. The children also loved seeing the cadets from Westcliff High School performing a march past to end our assembly.
We are always looking for opportunities to work with local groups and organisations to further enrich the children’s learning experiences. We value the support of our parents and carers and enjoy welcoming visitors from the community into school, as well as taking the children out to explore the world around them. Our aim is to ensure that the children feel a strong sense of belonging and understand the importance of community as they grow and learn.
Hamstel Junior School - The school serves a large community from diverse areas. This year we have worked hard to serve our community and provide essential links for our pupils and their families. This year, the school choir has performed at the Whittingham Residential Home for the Elderly and the two main theatres in the city. Year 6 have performed at Holy Trinity Church. During our VE Day celebrations, those in the community who remember the evacuation in Southend were invited to talk to a year group.
Our very active Parents Association has continued to go from strength to strength in their fund raising efforts and this year’s Hamstel Schools Summer Fayre, held on a Saturday, was bigger than ever in terms of family attendance!
We have continued to open the school site to various community groups including the local Tami school, Karate, Active Life and a regular kids’ holiday camp. We are part of the community service in the city where those on probation are supervised to work on painting etc around the site.
Our work on sustainability through the charity ‘Let’s Go Zero’ has helped us plan for projects we want to complete, coupled with becoming a ‘Clear Air School’ working with the council to support better air quality in our community.
We have also hosted secondary teachers coming into school to see our Year 6 Maths lessons for a second year, which has become an important part of their development. One of the grammar schools has also performed Shakespeare for our Year 6 children which they thoroughly enjoyed.
As a school we are always looking out for ways to engage with the local area and support where we can. We love to find opportunities to support locally as well as give insight to our pupils.
Porters Grange Primary School & Nursery - Over the course of the year, our children have shown incredible generosity, enthusiasm, and community spirit by raising money for a variety of meaningful charities. Guided by the school council, we proudly supported Children in Need and Save the Children during the autumn term, and Comic Relief in the spring.
Our Harvest celebration was made extra special by visitors from St John’s Church, who inspired us with stories about the wonders of the harvest and the vital work they do in our local community.
Beyond the school gates, our pupils actively contributed to the environment with a beach litter-picking initiative, demonstrating their commitment to caring for the world around them.
We were also thrilled to partner with the Royal Horticultural Society to create a beautiful rewilded garden space—now a flourishing outdoor area for all our children to enjoy and learn from.
Our exciting link with Southend Diving has continued, offering children the opportunity to develop their skills and maybe even follow in the footsteps of future Olympians!
West Leigh Junior School - This year, the West Leigh community has once again demonstrated its incredible generosity by supporting a range of important charities. From Macmillan and Children in Need to Comic Relief and Havens Hospices, our pupils, staff, and families have come together to make a real difference.
One of the standout moments of the year was our very own Strictly Come Dancing extravaganza, where staff took to the stage in dazzling style to raise awareness and funds for Children in Need. Their performances were a huge hit, capturing the hearts of everyone in our school community.
In support of Macmillan, we hosted a successful coffee and cake morning that brought together adults from both the Junior and Infant schools. Meanwhile, a vibrant non-uniform day helped raise both awareness and vital funds for Comic Relief.
Our biggest fundraising achievement came through our support for Little Havens. As part of the Waddle-on-Sea initiative, we raised over £6,000! This exciting project included a penguin design competition, opportunities for children to help paint a large penguin sculpture, and a fun-filled sponsor day. From water fights and waddles to dodgeball in the dark, the creativity and enthusiasm shown by our pupils was truly inspiring.
We are incredibly proud of the kindness, energy, and community spirit shown by everyone at West Leigh this year.
Portico Art & Design Festival
What an incredible celebration of creativity at this year’s Portico Art and Design Festival! We were blown away by the talent and imagination on display from pupils across all five schools in our academy, from our youngest artists in Nursery to the budding designers in Year 6. Displays included:

Back in October, pupils from across Portico Academy Trust came together for an exciting afternoon of sporting fun and friendly competition at our Portico Sports Festival.
Children from Hamstel Infants, Hamstel Juniors, Porters Grange Primary, Friars Primary and West Leigh Juniors were selected to represent their schools—and they did so with pride and enthusiasm.
The event featured a range of engaging and inclusive activities, including dodgeball, benchball, boccia, archery, and more. Every child showed fantastic sportsmanship, teamwork and determination throughout the afternoon.

Doing our bit for Charity
Over the course of the academic year, we held non-uniform days, Christmas jumper days and other fundraising events to raise money for important causes, some as a trust and others as individual schools.
