HEAT TRANSFER

Knowing your Materials and Equipment

It is important to understand what is needed for your session and have everything to hand. You will need: Vacuum Table, Screen, Squeegee, Printing Paste, Spoon, Acetate and Masking Tape.
Step 1 Transfer inks are ready-mixed in liquid form, any colours may be intermixed and can be watered down to create a lighter shade. Check the lid is tightly shut and give the bottle a shake.
Step 2 Paint dyes onto paper, noting that the image will be mirrored when printed.
Step 3 You can use the transfer inks to paint a design onto paper, or you can paint a sheet with flat colour and use other materials, such as threads, to mask off areas. You can also cut out and collage coloured sheets to create a design.
Step 4 Leave to dry.
Step 5 Place a clean sheet of newsprint on the printing bed.
Step 6 Put the fabric on the paper, and then place the image face down on the fabric. If you are using any materials as a mask place these between the fabric and your painted sheet.
Step 7 Cover this with another sheet of clean newsprint.
Step 8 Cover with the Teflon sheet.
Step 9 Slide the bed into the press, print for 45 to 50 seconds at 200 degrees.
Step 10 Remove your work from the press and when cool enough to handle lift off the paper to reveal your design.
