August Blooms at Tryon Palace

Happy August! The magnolias, hydrangeas and pomegranates are bursting forth into bloom! During the early morning- check out the kitchen garden for sunflowers, leek blooms, apples and awesome heirlooms galore! In the heat of the day, cool off with a walk through the Wilderness and go admire all the pollinator plants in the Hawks Allee. When you’re ready for more sun, check out the awesome annuals in the Latham and Carraway Gardens- the bananas are a garden staff favorite! If you haven’t made it to see our gardens yet this season, don't forget to stop by before everything switches to fall mode next month!

Speaking of next month- Tryon Palace will host the September Garden Lecture on Saturday, September 14th, 2024. Titled “Tough Plants of ENC: A Fall Plant Sale Sneak Peek,” the lecture will be presented by Hadley Cheris and Mike Spafford, members of the Tryon Palace Garden Staff. Delve into the world of resilient plants that thrive in Eastern North Carolina, overcoming the challenges posed by the weather in the past year. Get an exclusive preview of the diverse plant selection available at the upcoming Tryon Palace Fall Plant Sale. This lecture begins at 10:30 a.m. in Cullman Performance Hall at the North Carolina History Center. Suggested donation $5.

If you’re looking for an outside hobby and way to give back to your community, consider joining us as a garden volunteer! We are looking for Master Gardeners, Horticulturists, Garden Enthusiasts, General Yard Workers, and Carpenters. Some background in gardening is great but none is necessary, just a willingness to learn. We are looking for volunteers for pruning, planting, raking, mulching, watering, weeding, fence and trellis repair.
