From the Principal...

Weekly Update – Looking Ahead

Progress reports have gone out, and now is the perfect time to check in with your student about their grades and attendance. We’re proud to share that several students have regained eligibility—way to go, Bears!

Please take a few minutes to review your student’s progress report and attendance record together. Consistent attendance and effort make a huge difference in maintaining eligibility for extracurricular activities, athletics, and campus events. Encourage your student to stay focused, turn in all assignments on time, and ask for help when needed.

Spirit Days are coming...students are encouraged to participate in the Homecoming Events scheduled next week. Students that participate in Spirit Day Dress Up Days are still expected to be in AISD Dress Code. More information regarding the AISD Student Code of Conduct and Dress Code can be found at the link below.

Let’s keep building on the great work and continue to show Barnett PRIDE—Prepared, Respectful, Integrity, Determined, and Engaged—in and out of the classroom!

Know Before You Go

Student Arrival 8:20 am - 8:40 am

We know that your student's safety is the most important thing in the world. All students will enter through metal detectors when they arrive to school every morning.

  • Doors Open at 8:20am. Students arriving at school should be dropped off near the back main entrance of the school on the North side of the building. Students MUST report to the cafeteria utilizing the north patio doors or Gym A if they are not eating breakfast; for their safety, they are not permitted to wait outside once we open the doors.
  • CLASS STARTS AT 8:45 am. Please do all you can to ensure your student(s) arrive at school on time so that we can maximize every minute of the learning day. Being punctual is an important lifelong skill for students. Students are counted tardy after 8:45 am.
  • ANY STUDENT arriving after 8:45 am, must have a parent or guardian sign them in, in the main office. This will require you to park your car in the parking lot and accompany your student to the front office.
  • All students MUST enter through a metal detector. District policies require that all students will enter through a metal detector each time they enter the building. This includes students that arrive for athletics in the morning before school, and for any after school activities they return to campus to attend.
  • STUDENTS: Please remove any 3-ring metal binders, umbrellas, eyeglass cases, or any metal objects from your backpacks before walking through the metal detector. Place these items on the table by the teacher or administrator; you will receive them back once you are clear. Do not gather by the metal detector; continue moving into the cafeteria or the gymnasium. Look for directions from the staff members.
  • STUDENTS are NOT permitted to bring metal water cups or bottles to school. All water bottles must be see-through and have a complete closure to seal the water in at all times.
  • Please do not use the Bus Lane. You must use the parking lot driveway entering from the far west parking lot entrance by the Football field. Do NOT drop off in the front of the building; students will be required to walk around to the other side of the building. You will exit out the east parking lot entrance. Please review the map below.

Student Dismissal - 4:10 pm

  • School dismisses at 4:10 pm. Students should be picked up near the back main entrance of the school on the North side of the building, using the parking lot driveway. To ensure the safety of all families, we ask that parents please follow instructions and remain calm.
  • Please do not use the Bus Lane. You must use the parking lot driveway entering from the far west parking lot entrance by the Football field. Do NOT pick up in the front of the building; students will not be permitted to exit the front entrances of the building. You will exit the east parking lot entrance. Please review the map below.
  • Buses Depart Promptly at 4:17 pm. Please remind your student(s) to board their bus immediately after they are dismissed. The buses will leave promptly at their departure time and will not return to the campus if the student misses the bus.

School Visits, Breakfast, and Lunch

To ensure safety, Arlington ISD requires all visitors and guests to present a driver’s license or government-issued ID to enter our school buildings. Please be prepared to show your ID before you are able to enter the building.

Visitors are welcome. All visitors must present an ID before they have access to our school. For your student's safety and the safety of others, no visitors are allowed in our building without a valid ID. Only parents, guardians, or others listed on the student's registration will have access to our students. Visitors are NOT allowed in the classrooms during the school day unless the classroom teacher is aware, an appointment/agreement was made to the date and time of your visit or volunteer time period, and the mandatory volunteer application has been submitted and approved by AISD. We do not want to interrupt the teaching and learning that takes place in our school. We will have volunteer opportunities and will inform you of those opportunities as they are available. Please visit the district website below to apply to become a volunteer.

We would like to take the first few weeks of school to firmly establish our breakfast and lunch routines and expectations with the students, free of distractions or visitors. Lunch visitors will be welcomed on September 8th. Lunch visitors must be listed on the student's information page before they will be allowed to visit the student.

We have 4 lunches starting at 11:23 am. If you need to drop off your student's lunch after morning drop off, please drop off the meal at the main office before 11:15 am to ensure we can get the food to your student. If you need to drop off your student athlete's meal at the end of the school day before their event, please ensure you drop the meal off at the main office before 3:45 pm to ensure we can get the food to your student athlete.

Students are NOT permitted to have food delivered at any time.

To help us keep our campus secure at all times (before, during, and after school) and our lunch periods running smoothly, please remember that students are not permitted to receive food deliveries from outside vendors at any time.

Families are welcome to bring outside food for their student, but it must be dropped off at the main office before the start of the student’s lunch period unless you plan to stay and eat with them. If you are joining your child for lunch, we have designated visitor tables in the cafeteria so you can enjoy your time together while keeping our seating organized for all students.

For the safety of our campus, all visitors must check in at the main office and present a valid photo ID to receive a visitor badge before heading to the cafeteria. We appreciate your cooperation in helping us maintain a safe and welcoming environment for all Bears.

Meal Benefit Application Information

Meal Benefit Applications for the 2024-2025 school year are open now. Families are required to submit the meal application every year to receive meal benefits. Please take a few minutes to complete the application as most families don't realize they don't qualify and benefit from this program.

PBIS - Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports

On our campus, we use a system called, Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) to create a positive and safe learning environment for all students. PBIS is a proactive approach that teaches and reinforces appropriate behaviors throughout the school day.

How PBIS Works:

  • Teaching Expectations: We clearly define and teach expected behaviors in various areas of the school, such as the classroom, hallways, cafeteria, and gymnasium. For example, we focus on values like respect, responsibility, and safety.
  • Positive Reinforcement: When students demonstrate these positive behaviors, they receive recognition, praise, or other rewards. This helps to reinforce good behavior and encourages students to continue making positive choices.
  • Consistent Support: If a student struggles with certain behaviors, we offer additional support and guidance to help them improve. Our goal is to help every student succeed and feel good about their school experience.

How You Can Help:

  1. Talk About Expectations: Discuss the school’s behavior expectations with your student at home. Reinforce the importance of being respectful, responsible, and safe, and praise them when they demonstrate these behaviors.
  2. Stay Informed: Keep in touch with your student's teacher and stay updated on their progress. If there are areas where your student needs extra support, we can work together to help them succeed.
  3. Model Positive Behavior: Children learn a lot from watching adults. Model the behaviors we teach at school, such as being kind, respectful, and responsible in your daily life.
  4. Encourage Effort: Encourage your child to do their best at school and let them know that you’re proud of their efforts, not just their achievements. This helps build their confidence and motivation.

Safety, Security, and Dress Code

Students MUST WEAR their ID card every single day. The ID card must be WORN and VISIBLE at all times while at school or a school event. Students who are not wearing their ID are violating the Arlington ISD District Dress Code and will not be permitted to attend their classes without first being screened by the office and issued a temporary ID for the day. Students who are issued more than 1 temporary ID will receive disciplinary consequences. They must return the next day with their issued ID or report to the office to pay for a replacement. Each replacement will cost $1. IDs are necessary to keep our school safe at all times. Students and Staff Members will wear IDs ALWAYS.

We will be looking for the IDs before the student entering through the metal detectors. Please ensure your student has their ID each morning before school.

AISD Events

As with all events, students will not be permitted to attend AISD Athletic Events without a current Student ID Card AND a parent/guardian present during the entire game. Student IDs will be issued within the first few weeks of school. Students will not be allowed to participate in any school sponsored activities if they violate the AISD Student Code of Conduct, the Barnett Student Handbook, or fail to adhere to the parent/guardian rule.

Personal Electronic Device and Cell Phone Policy

As you know, House Bill 1481, a new state law passed by the Texas Legislature, requires school districts to adopt policies that prohibit students from using personal wireless communication devices during the school day.

The Board of Trustees adopted our Away for the Day policy to meet this requirement. Under Away for the Day, students’ personal devices — including cell phones, tablets, text-messaging devices, smartwatches, and similar electronics — must be powered off and out of sight during the entire school day, from the first bell to the last. This includes class time, transitions, lunch on campus, and restroom breaks. The purpose is to reduce distractions, improve focus, and foster a respectful learning environment for all.

We understand you may have questions. More details, including FAQs and information about consequences for not following the policy, are available here. You can also read HB 1481 in full here.
